When does hair start to curl

I'm a guy and am growing my hair long. I've been growing my hair out for 3 months. I only started to notice how my hair curls late last month. The curls are most prominent in my bangs which are longer than the rest of my hair (5 inches and reaches the tip of my nose). However they collapse in a perfectly round letter C shape 2 inches tall after air drying, covering my forehead. The sides and back are not as long yet (3-4 inches at different parts) and although they curl slightly, it's not as round as in the front. So, my question is, is it likely that the sides and back will curl as well at that length? I would really like the rest of my hair to be the same. I have a curly sort of bowl hair at this stage. I'll have a picture up soon if it seems unclear.

Welcome to a week celebrating curly hair!

When does hair start to curl

Now you know why your hair is curly but what if your hair changes?

That’s exactly what happened to my hair.

For years I had long, straight hair. Maybe it was a little wavy, but never frizzy. Then one day it started to change.

All of a sudden I had curly hair.

And I had no idea how to style it.

It took a long journey of trial and error to work out how to style my curls. I slowly fell in love with my curls and they are the reason I started Hair Romance.

Now I know from your comments and questions that I’m not alone in this hair change and I have found some reasons why this happens.

When does hair start to curl

There are several theories as to why hair changes texture.

Hormones, stress and ageing as seen as the common causes for changes to your hair texture and quality.

You’d think, with the size of the hair industry, there would be a conclusive answer to this question, but research is still underway and there are no decisive results.

One interesting fact about curly hair is that the gene for straight hair is recessive but that the curly hair gene is not completely dominant. That means you could have the curly hair gene but until it’s activated, your waves and curls will be dormant too.

The most likely theory, in my opinion, is to do with your hormones. Hormones are a possible trigger for the curly hair gene.

As well as affecting the quality of your hair, hormones can change your muscle tone too. This includes your scalp. The change of muscle tone could affect the shape of your hair follicles and their direction of growth. Straight hair follicles grow straight out but curly hair follicles have a hook shape.

With my hair, puberty was the when my curls decided to appear and this fits with the hormone changes. For many women, pregnancy and birth have a significant impact on their hair too.

So if you’ve noticed significant changes to your hair texture, check your hormone levels and talk to your doctor and hairdresser about it.

How do I know if my hair is starting to curl?

Next time you wash your hair, wet it thoroughly and then step out of the water. Look down at your hair, and see if it's curling into waves and ringlets. If it is, you're probably a curly girl. Water resets your hair to its natural state.

How long does hair have to be to curl?

Does Hair Length Matter? While your hair length doesn't play a role in getting a perm, the hair does need to be long enough to wrap around the rod. "To achieve a good curl, you'll need to have hair that's at least long enough to wrap around a rod two to two and a half times," advises O'Connor.

How can you tell if baby will have curly hair?

If both of your parents were born with curly hair, chances are that you'll be born with curly hair, too. But there are cases where two curly haired parents can produce a child with straight or wavy hair. Curly hair is considered a “dominant” gene trait.

Can straight hair turn curly?

An increase in androgens in females can actually change the shape of the hair follicle from round to flat and this can instigate a change in texture from straight to curly.
