While most of Marvel's Avengers have tapped out after three solo films, Chris Hemsworth is returning for a fourth round as Thor in the highly-anticipated follow-up to the irreverent Thor: Ragnarok.

If the third instalment of the Thor franchise saw Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi dip their toes into the more cosmic and comedic side of the character, Love and Thunder represents a double down in more ways than one. There's a new villain, new gods and even a new Thor.

Surprise, surprise. Aussies who missed Thor's latest adventure the first time around or those looking at a rerun of the film will need an active account with one very specific streaming service to see what all the buzz is about.

Classics that were built for bingeing

In Australia, the latest Marvel movie, Thor: Love and Thunder will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+ via the section of the platform dedicated to all things Marvel.

This corner of the Disney+ catalogue is also where you'll find the previous Thor and Avengers films, should you need to refresh or familiarise yourself with the hammer-wielding hero's previous team-ups and solo outings.

Following its run through Australian cinemas in July, Thor: Love and Thunder is  making its way into local households as part of this year's Disney Plus Day celebrations on the 8th of September.

Introduced in 2021, Disney Plus Day is a virtual event that commemorates the launch of the streaming service with a slew of new content, including Pinocchio, Cars on the Road and a behind-the-scenes feature focused on the making of Obi Wan Kenobi.

Unlike most streaming services, Disney+ doesn't offer a free trial. Still, there is an opportunity to save if you sign up for an entire year in advance rather than pay month-t0-month.

When does Thor: Love and Thunder release in Australia?

After a record-breaking run at theatres earlier this year, Thor: Love and Thunder will be making the jump to streaming via Disney+ on September 8th.

Like other recent Marvel releases, Thor: Love and Thunder will be available to stream in up to 4K quality and will arrive alongside a new episode of Disney's behind-the-scenes series Marvel Studios' Assembled focusing on the making of the film.

What is Thor: Love and Thunder about?

Picking up after the events of Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder follows the titular hero as he navigates something of a mid-life crisis amid the return of a now-super powered Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and the arrival of a new villain (Christian Bale) who specialises in slaying gods.

What is Disney+?

If you somehow haven't heard of it before, Disney+ is the company's attempt to topple Netflix as the king of streaming. Thanks to breakout hits like The Mandalorian, Only Murder in the Building and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the service has rapidly picked up steam since launching in late 2019. As of August 2022, Disney+ is said to boast over 150 million subscribers.

For Australians, the depth of the catalogue and hype attached to prestigious franchises like Star Wars and Marvel make it one of the more compelling streaming services available. However, even if it's destined to be a must-have for some audiences, it's far from the only flavour in the mix.
