The UEFA Europa League (UEL) is a European football competition contested by teams from all different associations across the continent and you can watch it in Australia. It is the second-tier tournament of European football behind the UEFA Champions League.

While there's prize money and silverware on the line, the biggest reward is that the winner automatically qualifies for the next edition of the UEFA Champions League group stage, if they have not qualified via their domestic competition.

Eintracht Frankfurt won their second Europa League last season, so are in the Champions League for 2022/23.

Europa League tournament format

The Europa League is an almost identical format to the Champions League, especially as we get to the group stages. A total of 58 teams are expected to participate in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League.

Action and interest starts to pick up at the group stage which is comprised of 32 clubs. Teams are split into 8 groups of 4 and restrictions ensure clubs from the same country are separated. Again, like the Champions League a home-and-away round-robin format is used. A total of 23 national associations are represented in the group stage for 2022/23. Bodø/Glimt, Nantes, Union Berlin and Union Saint-Gilloise will make their debut appearances in the group stage.

The winners and runners-up of each group advance to the knockout stage where things get spicy. At this point the 8 teams who finished third in their group from the Champions League are introduced.

The 8 group runners-up from the group stage and the 8 group third-placed teams from Champions League group stage play in the preliminary round knockout round. The knockout round play-offs then feature the 8 group winners from the group stage and the 8 winners from the preliminary knockout round.

A random draw is then held and teams play over 2 legs on a home-and-away basis for the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals. The final is held at a neutral venue.
