A local neighborhood council hopes a statue of screen icon Marilyn Monroe will soon adorn Van Nuys City Hall.

The Van Nuys Neighborhood Council released a community impact statement last month proposing to install a statue of the Hollywood icon in front of the building known as one of L.A.’s “neighborhood city halls.”

The news comes four years after Rep. Tony Cardenas, D-Panorama City, proposed a bill to name the Van Nuys Post Office after the Hollywood icon, who attended Van Nuys High School — as Norma Jeane Baker — for a short time in the early 1940s.

He added that he came up with the idea after visiting a summit in Hollywood a few months ago, where he spotted a life-size statue of Monroe.

“I thought that was the coolest thing ever,” he said. “That would be so exciting for Van Nuys to have the statue.”

Monroe was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926. She attended Van Nuys High, which was near her house. She lived there with her aunt after years in foster homes.

The future movie icon was discovered at the Van Nuys Airport, where she worked on the assembly line at Radioplane Co., which manufactured drones for the U.S. Army during World War II.

In 1945, photographer David Conover met Norma Jeane while taking photos of women working as part of the war effort.

She later quit her job, changed her name to Marilyn Monroe and began working for Conover.

She later starred in 29 films, becoming a screen legend. She married three times, and her husbands included baseball great Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller. She died in 1962.
