I Liked, Not Loved, It

Verified purchase

Wow the 1-star crowd was brutal. I almost didn't buy this because of their reviews. But I love British period films and I couldn't resist.

The story isn't deep; some of the people connected as family were a merry mix of races that didn't match, which was distracting at first. A silly woke move that nobody is allowed to "see" any kind of color? I don't know or care. However, I decisively put that aside and said, "whatever". I'm glad I did because it was a light-hearted, predictable but entertaining nonetheless to watch for no other reason than to relax and watch it play out. The characters played their parts well and pretty much in the personality of the time. There were no "hot" sex scenes (thankfully); no modern-day political narratives forced into the story (thankfully) and no homosexual scenes to check that box (thankfully). I don't at all mind watching a movie just for the story, predictable or not; familiar or not. A simple, fun watch in a lesser vain as Austin's Emma, but with a bit of twist. Pretty much Malcolm has a list of criteria that a prospective wife must meet in order to be considered. One lovely, rather vain young woman gets crossed off the list and gets her nose out of joint. Enter her friend from childhood who is employed to carry out jilted woman's revenge plan to humiliate Malcolm. The movie revolves around the efforts and set-ups to that end. I knew in short order who was going to end up with who and pretty much what the results of their scheme would be, but it was enjoyable to watch it all play out anyway.

I'm glad I bought it and feel my time wasn't wasted. Sometimes, IMO, when watching a movie, it's best to just relax and enjoy the ride, even if it's a ride taken before. Less criticism. Not everything has to be dissected to death and hold to absolute historical truth or even beat out the centuries of wrongs and horrors of the human race; does it have to drive home some divisive message; does it have to drive our blood pressure through the roof with adrenaline or violence? How about just getting some pop-corn and relax with a romantic little romp with some great scenery, excellent period costumes, beautiful grand homes, and simple playfulness? It really is okay to smile, even at the absurdities. It's a far better storyline than filling 2 hours with watching people having sex throughout the movie. Not exactly intelligent scripting there.

If you’re into POC period pieces

Verified purchase

I’ve always been a diehard, Jane Austen fan, and my all-time favorite is Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley. I’m also addicted to Sense and Sensibility, with Emma Thompson… although I love these movies, I wished that they would have made more with POC. And then along comes Bridgerton! Thank goodness! I’ve loved these kinds of period pieces for YEARS; so much so I think I’ve lived in that area at some point in my universal life and was reincarnated to this era…POC indeed existed back then, yet stories were never told until this day and age. I really enjoyed this movie a lot, and it was very refreshing to see a male & female POC take the lead. The only reason I’m giving it four stars is because I wish there was a little bit more heat between them.…then again I have Bridgerton for that… other than that I watch again.

Ridiculous bad reviews.

This is a charming adaptation. The characters are lovable and witty, and the story itself a perfect lesson for everyone who watches. I wish it had been a series instead of just a movie. I wanted much more from the characters and their relationship development. But I’m glad we have what we have. The soundtrack is stunning. The costumes are breathtaking. It does not deserve the hate it gets just because people are salty about the actors and Theo James leaving Sanditon. A true lover of period dramas will take this for what it is—a funny, good hearted romance for all ages. It’s not perfect, but it’s still enjoyable. Just be happy and stop nitpicking everything and enjoy life.

Charming, Refreshing & Loved the Multicultural Cast

Verified purchase

As soon as I found out the movie was going to be in my local theater, I bought tickets for the first day of the show. I fell in love with the movie short and watched this over and over. I adored that the movie had a multicultural cast, it did not have any explicit scenes, the dialogue spot on, the costumes gorgeous, the characters perfect for their roles. And I repeatedly checked amazon.com to find out when the DVD would be posted to purchase which I bought one month in advance. My friends and I saw this movie three times and we all fell in love with Mr. Malcolm. A brooding man who conveys a lot simply by his looks and stance. Oh my, what a delicious blend of acting skills, humor, cinematography, clean, and a splendid cast.

Complicated feelings from a period drama lover

Verified purchase

I was so sure I was going to like this movie that I bought it instead of renting. I’d watched the short film when it came out a couple years ago and was so excited to see it turned into a full-length film. I think this movie struggled to understand what its tone was. If it was meant to be a comedy, I wish it would’ve really leaned into the satire and silliness. I really liked the cast and felt like they were talented actors given poorly written characters and dialogue. The two main actresses play their parts VERY well, and Julia’s character is refreshingly complex and morally gray (for part of the movie, until a man teaches her how she ought to behave like a father scolding a child). The plot and dialogue are predictable without having anything new to say. The costumes were mostly accurate but very bland, the overall color palette of the movie wasn’t very interesting to look at. Yes, this is much more historically “accurate” than Persuasion 2022 or Bridgerton, but it fails to be as charming and earnest as Sanditon, as vibrant and engaging as Bridgerton, or as funny and witty as Emma 2020.

Good night at the movies

I enjoyed watching this movie and loved all of the actors in it. I am docking it one start purely because I was more interested in the secondary romance and was sad they didn’t have a bigger part. Totally worth the rental.

Nice little quiet romantic comedy to watch on a Sunday afternoon

Verified purchase

The story was set in the 1800s in Southern England, quite amusing at times, I had a laugh. Sadly the film was not shot in England, it was shot entirely in Ireland. I did not see any famous British landscapes. For that I dropped one star.

When CinemaBlend spoke to the film's director Emma Holly Jones, she said this: She is a dear, dear friend of mine, and she was never actually gonna be involved in the feature. She was a little busy making a rather large movie called the Eternals.
