Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the latest adventure in the Pokémon franchise, this time bringing with it a whole new open world, new catching mechanics and more.

While the deep mysteries of Hisui, and which Pokémon you’re going to encounter, are left for you to solve, there are a few big changes from classic Pokémon games that might take some getting used to.

When you begin your journey in Hisui, you’ll be offered one of three adorable Pokémon to take with you on your quest. During your journey, you’ll see the two you didn’t pick hanging out with the professor, but did you know there’s a way to get the two you didn’t pick without trading?

Where to find the other starters in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

In order to get whichever Pokémon you didn’t choose out of Rowlet, Cyndaquil and Oshawott, you simply need to see the end credits roll, which happens after you finish most of the game. We say 'most' because there are still several big end game quests that you can take on once this has happened.

When you spawn back in the Galaxy building, speak to the professor and you’ll be gifted two level 5 versions of whichever Pokémon you didn’t pick, aiding you on completing the Pokédex — something you’ll have to do if you want to complete another certain quest.

So there you go. Simple!

Pokemon Legends Arceus has three adorable starters to choose from. You’ll have to pick either Cyndaquil, Rowlet, or Oshawott to bet the first companion in this game. But which one is the best starter to choose? Here’s everything you need to know about making this tough decision.

Choosing a starter Pokemon in any Pokemon game is both the first and the most important decision you will make. The choice can impact your game and making the wrong one could lead you to regret it for the rest of the many hours most players put into the titles.

Especially when some are designed to be a little stronger than others. We’ve compiled all the pros and cons for Cyndaquil, Rowlet, and Oshawott in Pokemon Legends Arceus so you know what the best starter for you is.

Pokemon Legends Arceus staters explained

Starter types & evolutions

Let it be known that there’s no “right” or “wrong” starter – you could think Oshawott is the best of the bunch, whereas another trainer may be a hardcore Cyndaquil fan. But they do all have their own type and advantages which can help you make the decision.

Rowlet evolves into Dartrix and Hisuian Decidueye, Cyndaquil into Quilava and Hisuian Typhlosion, and Oshawott into Dewott and Hisuian Samurott.

Starter advantages

While the Hisuian evolutions have different typing from their respective starters, it may be worth weighing up how the first two ‘mon in the evolution line perform in the early game to get you through until they reach their final form.

You have to battle the new Noble Pokemon Kleavor in Obsidian Fieldlands, which is a Bug/Rock-type that evolves from Scyther. It is weak to Water so Oshawott has a clear edge here over the other two starters. It does have the lowest stats out of the three, though. Cyndaquil has the highest Speed and Special Attack stats which will prove useful in battle, especially when it comes to filling up the Pokedex.

The second Frenzied Noble is a Grass-type so obviously Cyndaquil has a clear advantage here with its Fire typing.

That being said, our pick for the best starter in Pokemon Legends Arceus is Rowlet. Unlike the other two, it has dual typing of Flying/Grass, meaning it’s strong against more enemies and also can learn a higher variety of moves.

Its third evolution Decidueye is a Grass/Fighting-type which makes it a powerhouse in battles in the late game. The other two aren’t bad by any means though, it’s really just up to personal preference.

Now you should have an idea of who you’re picking for your adventure across the Hisui region.
