Where to buy Okinawan sweet potato slips

What is my growing philosophy? We are a family-owned small-scale grower of Sweet Potato Starts based on sustainable agriculture and innovative sustainable practices. We are certified and inspected by the Florida Department of Agriculture.

  • It is December 2022 and it is a great time to plant Sweet Potatoes and Potatoes depending on where you live
  • Plant Sweet Potatoes in the Warmer Regions now
  • If you live in USDA growing Zones 11 or 10 or 9b (simply tarp if you have a frost) plant these -> Sweet Potato Slips
  • Plant Potatoes for a fall and winter crop in warmer regions now
  • If you live in USDA growing zones 11, 10, or 9 (just plant cover on frost days) plants these -> Seed Potatoes

If you grow sweet potatoes, they will yield scores of healthy and tasty sweet potatoes., that can be transformed into fries, juiced, side dishes, or the main meal. The greens are like summer spinach. They will save you money and start you on the road to food security or just a lot of fun to grow.

I have developed these varieties by cross-polarization of various varieties of Sweet Potatoes. These are Non-GMO. Yes, Sweet Potato flowers can produce Sweet Potato seeds. So they are not exactly Okinawan, Hawaiian, Murasaki, Charleston, African Violet, Japanese, Stokes, Yams, Dioscorea Alata, Ube, or anything you have ever encountered. I call them Martian Potatoes because they are transcendent in taste and resilience.

In that sense, they are native to the US, a deep Florida purple sweet potato, grown and cultivated. They are extremely tolerant of harsh conditions. They seem to grow no matter what, and where you live. If you feel you cannot grow anything, these are made for you, as they will produce.

  • Drought – They go into survival mode until the next rain, then take off faster.
  • Water – We get rains during our rainy season you would think it is the end of the world. They survive hurricanes here. They come out greeners and bigger.
  • Poor Soil – No problem they have adapted to this. In fact, too much N will make them leaf out.
  • Extreme heat – They will grow bigger.
  • Weeds – Not an issue, they will overtake them until all you see is a field of green edible sweet potato leaves.
  • Insects – They are a joke to these tubers – I live near a forest and a swamp in the jungle of Florida, and I have never ever sprayed them with anything.

I call my variety Martian Potatoes because they are the most resilient potatoes on earth. However, you can call them simply, purple sweet potatoes.

Where to buy Okinawan sweet potato slips
You get slips that have roots and I add some unique un-rooted variety cuttings that grow vigorously. Hence your plants get a 3-week head start, important when growing sweet potatoes. This is one of the reasons these plants are different than others.

I have customers growing them in Alaska to Vermont to South Florida. They seem to grow anywhere as long as the soil temps are above 65 f or 18 c. I also use organic-based practices, but to keep it simple, just grow them in your native soil and use the resources around you. I have never used any chemicals, zero. I work smart and with nature and I think my yields and quality are superior.

If you want to try to grow them, you will probably succeed even if you have no green thumb whatsoever. I cultivated them this way with special varieties and methods. The genetic varieties matter for survival. I give you roots and vines. Each has its own advantages, plant them both.

Growing sweet potatoes for charity – Some people grow and give their produce to a food bank or a homeless shelter or to neighbors and family for good social credit or altruism or holiday gifts. This is a better gift than something store-bought with empty calories in a shiny package or can. Whatever your reason for growing, give my sweet potatoes a try, they are out of this world.

They are yummy, nutrient-dense, and fun to grow. I would love to see them make it to a Martian Colony.

Descended from the first sweet potatoes to reach Japan prior to 1500. The purple coloration is connected with the high anthocyanin content. This one is documented to contain more of the potent antioxidant than even blueberries! Ivory-colored skin, brilliant purple flesh. Our favorite, but it takes a long season. Recommended for Zone 6b or warmer. Please consider these terms before ordering live plants: Most plants will be 3”-7” in height. All plants will ship prompt as available. Please make sure you are ready for your order in your zone as these young, tender plants generally have no resistance to cold. No orders shipped outside of the USA.

Also known as Hawaiian Sweet Potato and Uala, the Okinawan Sweet Potato is tubular in shape. It has a buff colored skin with earthy spots and its flesh is violet-purple. The Okinawan purple sweet potato has a delicate, slightly sweet taste and a creamy texture and can be used like other sweet potatoes.
how to eat
Try them baked, boiled, fried, roasted or grilled.
health benefits
Good source of fiber and provides potassium. Like most sweet potatoes, it has a low glycemic index, essential for weight watchers and diabetics. Some studies have discovered significant antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Using a small hand trowel, dig a hole about 4" or 5" deep and 3" wide. Place one slip in each hole with the roots pointing down. Position the slip so that the bottom half will be covered with dirt while the top half with all of the new leaves is above ground.

Carefully fill the hole with dirt so that you don't bruise the new plant. Sweet potatoes don't like to be bruised or bumped around too much. When you have completely covered it with soil, gently press the plant and surrounding dirt to set the plant and to remove any remaining air pockets. Continue the same way until all of your slips are planted.

Slips Delivery - Fantastic!!!

I am truly amazed at the condition my slips (sweet potatoes) came in the mail. Unlike most slips or plantings in the mail that are dried up and in horrible shape. The Caribbeangardenseed slips I ordered where in great shape and very alive.
I know where I will be ordering from now on.
