What is a tooth extraction?

Sometimes, people need to have a tooth pulled out. This is called a tooth extraction. This tooth extraction is usually done by a dentist or an oral surgeon. There are various reasons why you might need to have a tooth pulled. Learn what to expect during and after this dental procedure.

When might you need a tooth extraction?

You might need to have a tooth pulled out if you have:

  • severe gum disease
  • a deep infection in a tooth
  • a broken tooth
  • orthodontic reasons
  • problems with a wisdom tooth

Wisdom teeth, which are the last adult teeth to arrive, sometimes need to be removed. They can become stuck if they don’t have enough space to grow properly.

What happens during a tooth extraction?

If you need a tooth to be removed, your dentist will usually give you a local anaesthetic to numb your mouth so you don’t feel pain. Your dentist will then use a special tool to loosen the tooth in the gum. Once the tooth is loose, they will remove it with forceps.

If your tooth extraction is more complicated, you might need to be given a general anaesthetic, which will put you to sleep.

What happens after a tooth extraction?

After your tooth has been removed, your dentist will probably need to make sure the gum socket is clean. If you needed a cut in the gum during tooth removal, you might need a stitch to close the cut.

You might have some bleeding and if so, the dentist will usually ask you to bite down on a piece of gauze to stop the bleeding.

Once the anaesthetic wears off, you will probably have some pain. Your dentist might write you a prescription for pain relief medicine or recommend an over-the-counter medicine.

You’ll also probably be told to eat soft foods and chew on the unaffected side of your mouth for a while. Be careful not to bite your lip while it is numb. You should rest and avoid physical sports, smoking and drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours.

Usually, the wound will take 1 or 2 weeks to heal. However, contact your dentist if you have:

  • ongoing severe pain — this may be caused by a complication called dry socket
  • excessive bleeding
  • a fever

Are there any alternatives to tooth extraction?

Ask your dentist to explain any alternatives to tooth extraction and what their benefits and risks are.

What are the costs of tooth extraction?

If you have health insurance, check whether it covers tooth extraction. If you are having a tooth out in your dentist’s dental surgery, it may be covered under general treatment (extras) cover. If you need surgery, it is usually considered ‘major dental’. If it is being done in hospital you will also need to have hospital cover.

Also, check with your state health department for public oral health services you can use. Children aged from 2 to 17 years might be eligible for free basic dental services — check with Services Australia.

Why so much difference between Dental Fees and Prices?

There are no standard fees and prices for services provided by dentists. It is not like medical services covered by Medicare, which have prescribed fees in Australia.

This means a patient can get 10 very different treatment plans from 10 different dentists – and each can charge as they please. Why?

Dentistry is regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) through the Dental Board of Australia (DBA), which provides registration standards, codes of conduct as well as guidelines for professional practice. These standards and guidelines only focus on ensuring quality of care and don’t extend to pricing or prescribe a treatment method for each dental service.

Dentists’ prices depend on a range of factors – such as location, overheads and differences in the method used (e.g. there’s different ways to provide a filling).

This means costs for the same procedure can vary because it may take longer to perform on some patients, or dentists might use different techniques, or the degree of difficulty could vary.

Variations in the treatment method and materials offered by clinicians for the same item numbers mean you won’t necessarily want to choose your dentist based on cost alone, however it does help to have an idea of just how much other dental practitioners are charging for similar services.

How much does a dental check-up cost?

To see just how much dental fees varied, The website Choice conducted a mystery shop by calling a total of 35 dental clinics across all eight states and territories (we included a mixture of capital city and regional dentists). They enquired about the cost of a check-up – comprehensive oral exam (item number 011), scale and clean (114) and a fluoride treatment (121) – as a new patient without private health insurance. We also checked the price for two X-rays (022).

What we found:

The cost of a check-up (oral exam/scale and clean/fluoride treatment) varied from $150 to $305, with an average price of $231.
Need X-rays? Add another $89.50 for two, on average.

Average cost of a check-up

Each year, the ADA surveys dental practitioners (in 2016 they had 2811 responses from practitioners and specialists) to provide average price data on over 100 dental treatments/item numbers.

According to the ADA’s fee data, the average cost of the same check-up we mystery shopped – including the examination, scale and clean and a fluoride treatment – is around $222 (add an average of $90 for two X-rays).

The ADA fee survey also shows big price discrepancies for the cost of dental work across Australia.

For example, prices for a tooth extraction (311) varied from $135 to $295, an anterior filling (521) from $115 to $206 and a crown (615) from $1261 to $1945.

In terms of price, the ACT most often had the most expensive price, followed by Tasmania; and South Australia most often had the cheapest, followed by Western Australia.

You’re also likely to pay more if you see a specialist as opposed to a general practitioner.

Specialists, in addition to meeting all the minimum requirements of practising as a general dental practitioner, must have completed two years of general dentistry practice and hold a qualification in their specialist area.

There are currently 13 different specialties in Australia: these include endodontics (root canal), orthodontics (such as braces) and prosthodontics (crowns and dentures) to name a few.

How much does it cost to pull a tooth?

A simple extraction without insurance costs between $75 and $250. For a surgical extraction, however, prices can go up to $300 a tooth or more. The price you pay depends on factors like your tooth's condition and the type of extraction and anesthesia you need.

How do you get a rotten tooth out at home?

Make use of a cold, wet washcloth or medical gauze to grip and remove a loose tooth. If you think the tooth is not loose enough to come out painlessly, slightly wiggle it while holding it with a gauze or wet cloth. This will help the loose tooth come out quickly and stop the bleeding if any.

Can I get my tooth pulled at home?

As for adult teeth, it's never a good idea to pull these at home, and you should see your dentist immediately if you do experience a loose tooth. To learn more about pulling baby teeth, talk to your pediatric dentist.

How can I get my tooth pulled?

If the tooth can be removed using Novocain or local anesthesia, most dentists can do this right in the office, perhaps even at the same time as your consultation. If the dentist determines that an oral surgeon is necessary, most dental offices have oral surgeons they work with and can easily make a referral.
