Where to go for Walmart orientation

Scott has worked for Walmart and is familiar with their hiring process.

Land a job at Walmart in five easy steps.

Land a job at Walmart in five easy steps.

Getting Hired at Walmart

Landing a job can be a tedious experience. With unemployment rates skyrocketing, Walmart has a larger, more diverse field of job candidates than ever. People who had previously never considered applying to the retail giant are now putting in their applications. If you are one of the many people considering applying, here's a summary of what to expect.

Tip: Walmart only hires part-time help now. That means 32 hours a week or less. Once you are hired, you can become full-time once you "prove yourself" as a good employee. This usually happens after your first 90 days of employment.

1. The Application

Walmart only accepts online applications. You can fill the application out at home or at a hiring kiosk at any Walmart. There is usually one near Customer Service and one near the back of the store. It is probably better to stay at home because you'll have fewer distractions, and the whole process can take up to an hour.

To fill it out at home, just find the Walmart careers website. Here, it will ask you to create an account with a password.

Once you are logged on, it will ask you to fill out all of the necessary information you normally put in when applying for a job. Be prepared to include your work history, the jobs you are applying for, and your work availability.

Tip: The more jobs or departments you are willing to work for, the better. The same goes for the more hours and days you are available to work.

2. The Assessment Test

The next step is to take the Assessment Test. This is to get an idea of how you would deal with certain situations concerning customers, supervisors, co-workers, and problems in general. The results place you either in what Walmart calls "Tier 1" or "Tier 2." People in Tier 1 are chosen over people in Tier 2.

The test is about 65 questions long and is multiple choice. It will include a series of statements (for example: "Being on time to work is important"). For each of these statements, you will select a choice ranging from "Strongly Agree" to "Strongly Disagree."

Tip: For each of the statements, choose either "Strongly Agree" or "Strongly Disagree." Never choose anything in the middle. This will show that you are decisive in your decisions and will help you get into Tier 1.

3. The First Interview

Walmart interviews three candidates for every job, and they choose the best candidate out of those three.

But here's the kicker: You will be interviewed by three people at the same time!

Each interviewer will take turns asking you questions, and some of the questions are multi-part questions.

For example: "At your previous job, were there any policies you didn't agree with? Did you take steps to get that policy changed? What were those steps?"

After the interview, they send you home with the reassurance they will call you within seven days with a decision.

4. The Second Interview

If they're interested in you, when they call you back, they will ask you to come in for a second interview. This means you were the best candidate of the three they interviewed!

This interview is almost exactly like the first—three interviewers and mostly the same questions. If they still want you at this point, you will fill out some paperwork for a background check. Then they'll send you to a drug screening if your position requires it.

After the results of the drug test and background check (about three days), they'll call you for orientation.

5. Orientation

Orientation lasts three days. (Seems like everything is in threes, doesn't it?) The first two days are filled with paperwork, videos, and basically learning about Walmart. Oh, and learning the Walmart cheer! But don't worry, there will be others in orientation with you.

The third day of orientation is spent on the computer doing a series of modules. These are called CBLs. One is called "Alcohol Compliance," for example. Each module teaches you what you need to know about the subject matter, then gives you a little quiz. If you don't pass, you take it again until you do. Not bad, really.

After all of this, they give you a work schedule and send you on your way.

Congrats! You have made it through from application to orientation.

I think it should go back to paper applications, I can't apply for six months because I somehow failed the assessment test, It doesnt even explain why.

Jaden on August 09, 2018:

I applied a few months back and got nothing so I applied again and got a call within 2 days for an interview the next day so I agreed. I went in for cap2 (unloading trucks and stocking) and the interviewer asked me two maybe 3 quick questions and told me to sign some papers and fill out a background check to start working. The whole time I was adamant about working as a personal shopper for online grocery (a 50 cent bonus and in the cool area most of the time) they called me later that day saying that a position in online grocery was now open after I had some people refer me to their manager. She asked if that was still a position I was interested in and I said yes and she said ok great and that was the end of that conversation. The next day she calls at 9am and says that orientation will be at 4pm that day and I'm like ok I mean that's a little rushed but I have nothing else to do so yeah that's fine. I went in for orientation and will be starting two days after orientation. It was a fast easy but slightly rushed process. I'm not sure if I'm just lucky but out of the 3 jobs I've had I've gone from applying to working within a week. I feel bad for all the people who have to wait ages it's bad enough waiting a day or two.

KPD on July 23, 2018:

Son has been waiting on his background check for 3 weeks today. First advantage is the company performing thr check. They have advised they are waiting on information from the local courthouse. We have electronic documentation from the courthouse that no request for information has been made by First Advantage or anyone else. Yes the documentation is without question accurate and can be proven. What can be done?

Chris on March 03, 2018:

Great article, I must say that Walmart has the worst recruitment process of any company I have ever seen, and I have been in large format retail management for 14 years.

It is so shockingly bad that even though I was offered a well paid position, I turned it down for lower pay at another company that had a much more welcoming culture.

In summary

Zero communication from anyone at the company until after the interview

Broken application process, non-functional website.

Poorly constructed exam questions, no option to even apply without passing comprehensive testing.

Inaccurate data in email templates, incorrect locations and time zones for interviews.

Massive delays in the process, one month or longer.

Overall, a demoralizing process, indicative of the culture of the company.

Their Canadian recruitment portal (managed by brassring) is very poorly laid out, and the formatting makes the links hard to see, especially when viewed on a phone or tablet. The text often overlaps, and the drop down boxes jumble the words on top of each other. I viewed on 3 different browsers, it was all the same. I have never seen a corporate website so poorly presented.

Many of the links on the site take you to a dead end, or a blank screen, and the Candidate Zone/ Candidate Portal has no content and seems to serve no purpose.

You will not receive email updates on your progress, you will have to log in and check for updates.

Their mid level management exam is indeed 65 questions as described above, but for ASM or GM roles, it is 125 questions, and will take up to an hour. You must complete this EVERY TIME you apply for a position, even through the same portal and profile. The questions are always the same.

You application will not be submitted until you complete this exam. It suggests 20 mins to complete, but with 125 questions (90 personality assessments and 35 math questions) it would allow 10 seconds per answer.

The exam questions are poorly constructed, and in at least 3 of them, almost impossible to understand. They involved reading tables and graphs, calculating sequences. Sounds easy, but some were not. The rest are % calculations, some with riddles, and although they are multi-choice, they still require a fair bit of deconstruction and working. For two of them, I came up with a different answer than what was listed as an option, and took a screenshot. I have yet to find anyone who can answer the question.

There is no way to contact anyone at any point during the application or interview booking process, no contact numbers, and they only ever communicate through template emails from do-not-reply email addresses.

If you are not selected for a position, you will receive a very terse and inconsiderate statement "Company Not Interested" next to the position applied for in your profile. No explanation, just a general we-couldn’t-care-less attitude towards the hard work put in to complete the exam and write a cover letter. No offer to re-apply either, just a burnt bridge. I received this on two out of three applications.

I contacted their 1800 number, and went into the store, and in both cases everyone I talked to shut me down with the statement “You will hear from us if you are selected.” I expect they get a lot of enquiries from a wide range of demographics, but I am a senior manager and would have expected at least a minute of time from a peer in the industry. I was not able to reach anyone beyond a assistant grocery manager. He was polite, but not interested in taking my resume, or assisting in any way.

If you are selected for the next stage, you will see "Interview" listed, with the statement "Check your messages for details". In my experience, over a month went past with no messages, no details, and no follow up. I feared there had been a breakdown and I had missed an opportunity, but 35 days later I received an email link to book for an interview for one of the positions I applied to.

The interview booking link invites you to select a time on the days that they make available on the calendar, I had 3 options for the day, and multiple 30min time slots within that ranging from 8am to 8pm. Again, no way to communicate with them even at this stage, although the name of the interviewer was listed.

The booking website is again one of the worst I’ve seen, poorly formatted, and stuck with the store location listed as Toronto Stockyards, with no option to change. I am in Vancouver. I went ahead and booked anyway, and I received an email confirming the location as a store in Downtown Vancouver, but the time zone for the interview was specified as EST, not PST, making the interview time 5am in my timezone.

48 hours before the interview I received another Do-not-reply email, confirming the location was in Toronto, not Vancouver, and again confirming the time as 8am EST (5am PST). It advised to arrive 10 mins early and go to the customer service desk. It did not advise to bring or prepare anything.

The email was addressed “Dear ,” indicating that even their form data is not correctly mapped to their email templates. An amateur mistake, it is clear that no one has audited or tested their online portal.

In summary

Zero communication from anyone at the company until after the interview

Broken application process, non-functional website.

Poorly constructed exam questions, no option to even apply without passing comprehensive testing.

Inaccurate data in email templates, incorrect locations and time zones for interviews.

I filled out application online for pharmacy tech with NO experience back in early February, 2017. Pharmacy Manager called me 2 days later. Interviewed next day. Pretty much got job on the spot. Now I am a pharmacy tech there. They pay to put you in pharmacy tech training.

I love it. But, the hours are all over the place. 24 one week. 9 the next. I put a stop to that. The days I am not at my store, i go to another to help out.

After 6 months, you can transfer to another store which I may do. I like the store I help out in better.

Sally on November 08, 2016:

Last Sunday, I sent in my application to work at Walmart. I called in yesterday to make an appointment to come in today for my interview. I got accepted. This article basically explained everything but the orientation part is a bit different. For the location I applied at, they told me that the Orientation will be three days to a week. The first day is paperwork and the second day is a group work/participation. The process is a bit different but overall it's relaxing to know that the article is similar.

Basically, once you pass the interview and is getting the training or orientation then you're basically in unless you did something that caused you to not get the job.

Ashlynn on November 07, 2016:

Alright, Im confused about everything because of this article, I had an interview with Walmart with no previous job experience last week and they offered me the job so i signed some papers and I filled out the background check (and I know I have nothing to be worried about there) and I just called to check on the status of my background check and I got sent to personnel they asked for my phone number and name and that was it... What was that, a good thing? a bad thing? Can someone please explain to me what is going on

RussellJames89 on October 11, 2016:

I recently got hired at walmart. I did the first interview. Then a week later I got called in to sign all the papers and receive the job offer. I have done the background screening and now just waiting for a call back for orientation. I'm just worried about the references part. The lady hiring me said I just need to call these references to verify you work there. So I had to explain to her that the temp agency who I worked for terminated me a few years back for some stupid misunderstanding that couldn't be resolved. I'm just worried that when she calls the temp agency I worked at she won't be able to verify I worked there. So will that effect me getting the job I filled out the papers and thats when she asked me for the references. Do I call them back and ask if I should give a different reference. I have one more but that reference isn't related to the position I received like my bad references are.

I applied for a pharm tech position with no experience. About two weeks later, I received a call to go in for an interview. I'm guessing the pharmacist already like my application and resume, so he and the lead pharm tech didn't even interview me. They just asked about availability, my math skills, and gave an insight of what I would be doing as a tech. They asked me to jump on board and personel started the paperwork for me. The girls in personel were really surprised I was hired right on with no experience, so I was pretty lucky. Filled out some paperworks, then I was given directions to go do my drug test. Now just waiting for the call to go in for orientation!

Cynthia Hoover from Newton, West Virginia on September 21, 2016:

Interesting read. I worked in Management for Walmart for some time. Very similar to the interviews we conducted at my location with a few small differences. We never did a second interview and in many cases the manager never conducted an interview it was left solely to Personnel and Customer Service Managers and they interviewed as a panel. Generally applicants would be seated in a waiting area after the interview. Then once the decision was made to hire an individual Management only came in to complete the job offer. The other applicants who did not get the job were politely thanked for their time and dismissed.

Donna-1 on August 31, 2016:

I applied at Walmart with a college degree and 12 yrs as an administrative assistant at top medical school and research center. I was worn out from years at a computer, behind a desk, having too many bosses, and having to wear business attire every day. I wanted a job where I could be on my feet basically doing work that required little thought. I only wanted part time work, any schedule.

I was quickly hired as a greeter and put out on the floor. I was never told what my job would encompass (duties other than greeting and doing security checks). After about 5 weeks, my greeter job was taken away because a previous & much older greeter was given her job back. (Which was now MY job.) So I went on to train as a cashier and do basically anything that needed to be done at the moment.

But my big gripe was all the computer "modules" employees have to finish. I was not given time to come into the computer lab, just told to work on them when I had "spare time." Which I faithfully attempted to do. They take a lot of time, however, and there was no such thing as "spare time." All of a sudden, I was called in to HR and warned I had to get all of the modules finished ASAP, that I was taking too long.

This was even though the computer lab was more often than not being used by whole teams of Walmart management wannabees, and was therefore unavailable. Or the computers were not working. Or they were already being used by other employees who were desperate to get all the modules finished in order to keep their jobs. And I'm was not looking for excuses. I had used computers for decades. The modules were basically for totally inexperienced and unschooled hirees who knew nothing about common business practices and common sense solutions.

I was not a minority hiree, and feel I was actually treated poorly because of it. Maybe it wasn't the right place for me after all. I ended up going to work as a bagger & janitor for a Kroger store. No yelling bosses. No computer modules. No being passed from department to department. I was treated fairly and with respect at Kroger.

Tina on August 20, 2016:

Yeah...three days of orientation is not right. Applied to Walmart a month ago. Got called in for an interview, approved on the first interview, background check for two days, started orientation and was told "you'll be on the floor after a week of computer training." Three days in I am told "you have all of next week in the back doing computer modules. After that week you'll be on the floor." I have yet to do training for the position I was told I was getting, and the system keeps saying I did not complete modules, so I have to take them over even when I get 100% the first time.

I went to an interview today. It went great, got asked about 5-7 questions and answered them properly. I felt as if the manager was interested in me. After the interview she brought in a couple of papers and made me sign them and fill them out. One of them included something about 90 days. The others was background check. She even made me sign this paper that included how much I would get paid. Afterwards we finished it off saying I will get a call back soon for all the new hired workers to come on a specific day. I'm assuming it's that orientation thing. She took a photo copy of my Drivers license and service card also including my social insurance number. Afterwards I left now waiting for the call back for the date. I'm just wondering why didn't I get a drug test? I'm wondering if she got the information from my medical card or something? Going through the process right now-

Called for the '1st interview' - asked 5 questions or so about prior experience in the work force- here are two examples of what I was asked:

"Share a time when you disagreed with a co-worker and how did you go about it?"

"List a time when you went up and beyond to help out a customer".

Anyways the manager told me I passed the interview and that they would like to offer me the job that day if they could get a hold of my references (you need 2 references- does not have to be work related) That day they could not get a hold of either of my references so I left the building feeling a bit bummed out. But after calling them back a day or two later- and giving them another reference number- they called me back saying they want me in for a 'Job Offer' ..

Now is this 'Job Offer" just another interview or am I not having a second interview like so many of you who have posted said you had to do? I will find out..

Not sure if this 'Job Offer' is when I'll be getting drug tested or not but we shall soon find out..

Applied online last week. Saturday night, I received a call from one the of managers asking me to come in for an interview on Sunday morning. Monday morning, I was called back to sign paperwork and look over my job responsibilities; afterwards, they sent me for a drug test. A few hours later, I get another call from a manager at Walmart asking me to come in on Thursday for orientation.

Am I officially hired?

Chasity on July 22, 2014:

I applied at Wal-Mart on the 15th(07-15-2014), I received a call for an interview on (07/19/2014). I went into Wal-Mart on 07/21/2014), I received TWO interviews that day. Part One was with only one employee, Part Two was with 2 Employees and an assistant manager. Between both interviews I was asked to step out of the room and wait to be called back in. After the first interview, I came back, received my second interview.. Then, they all came out and told me that I'd be working in 'Apparel' to go back to the room and fill out paper work, I exited Wal-Mart with a drug screen paper.. Was told I ha 24 hours to get that done, went to the hospital to be drug tested... I received a phone call the next day (07/22/2014) for a 'Job Offer' they then showed me how much I would make, what I would be doing, etc... I was told to come back the next day (07/23/2014) for orientation. This will be my first job, no experience. Also during interview 1, I got asked 4-6 questions. The second interview, I got asked the same questions but with three people evaluating me. The job offer was done with the shift manager, tomorrow I do orientation, so I am completely unsure as to if what this article say is true. But, I wish everyone the best of luck!(:

Christina on June 25, 2014:

I did 2 interviews in one day.. accepted the job offer after reading the job description, pay, hours on the computer. I signed background check papers and did the deug screen. I did all of this on a Thursday it is now Wednesday (almost a week later). I called and she said background check is still pending. How long does it take for walmart to get background checks done? I use to do background checks we had a quick turn around. I know i have a clean record. Just ready to work.

Fayyyy on March 29, 2014:

We'll I passed all interviews at Sams Club & also my drug test ! I'm waiting for them to set up my orientation date how long is the wait I'm curious && ready to work ???!!!!!

Donna on March 11, 2014:

I started Orientation today. I got my "badge" with name and filled out forms and did the Tax thing on the computer. Does this mean that they already saw my Background Check? It was quick. 3 days later they called me to start Orientation. DO hey only start you for Orientation if you cleared the Background? OR they can hire you still without BC? HR person did not mention anything like, the BC's are still pending so if it comes back with problems, you guys will get terminated. My BC has nothing too bad realy, but I do have arrests from back in the days. IF anyone can shed light I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I just recently got hired by walmart and probably will receive a call for orientation, but had interviews at 2 other walmarts that didn't want me......on the day of my interview at the other walmart, I had a smile on my face ALL DAY which is what might have helped

had 2 interviews at walmart with the same manager and he told me to call back in about a couple of days. So any advice would be appreciated.

Jamie on June 14, 2013:

I went through my 3 interviews & was offered a position as pharmacy tech. My drug test came back fine but the only thing I am waiting on is my background check. I did an FBI background check & a week later they said I need a state background check so I go & do that & am still waiting on my fbi to come through, 2 and half weeks later they call me & say they still have not received it, & say they called the post office & that it was there unclaimed so they had them send it back out. I called the background check number & they confirmed that it was unclaimed & walmart contacted them to have it sent back out. That was Mon & now it is Friday & they just called to let me know that they have not forgot about me & are still waiting on both background checks. I have no record & the address they were to be sent to was confirmed so I do not know if walmart is trying to give me the run around until they find somebody to take my position. They are hiring 200 employees for a new walmart opening up & that is the one I applied to so I don't know what gives. Hopefully they are received next week. I paid for my own backgrounds so if they decide they do not want to hire me they still owe me a reimbursement fee of 90 dollars for me paying.

I applied , online, at Wamart 2 days ago and haven't heard anything. I also wanted to apply at Sam's club. Do I have to redo the online application and assessment? Or can I log onto my existing online application and click Sam's club?

thank you!

Miss.Liita on June 13, 2013:

I just interviewed for Sam's Club on wednesday (June/2013). I had the first interview, then was asked if i minded waiting a few minutes for the second interview. I of course said I didn't mind. Had the second interview, then was told about the job duties, hours, and what I'd be paid. Signed some paperwork, verified my information was correct, then sent off for a drug test. Was told it would take about 7 to 10 business days for them to get back to me.

My friend who worked for the same sam's club said it took them about a week to call her back for orientation and a schedule.

So, i guess i'll wait a week then and call them to see what they say.

Bryan on May 14, 2013:

all this seems correct to be honest, if you have an iq above 80 you should be able to get a job here. great for schooling situations.

Bmn on April 30, 2013:

Then the store where I applied at HAS to be the slowest!

Had interview w/ hourly manager....asked 6 scenario ?'s...checked to see if all the paperwork was correct---hr/day avail., references & so on. She also liked the fact that I applied for at least 7 different departments as well. Had no other manager talk w/ me as of yet

Even signed background check & drug testing paperwork.

I know that I was Tier 1 as well...I filled out the store app. & after 2 wks was called for the 1st interview. She definitely told me that I was going to be getting 2 more interviews & STILL nothing from them. Going to be 2 months since, so I figured don't hold my breathe for them to call

John on April 21, 2013:

I was called for an interview a few days ago. I filled out some paperwork, then had an interview with the manager and was asked 5 scenario questions and on each was asked to name a situation where it was applied or handled it at any job I worked at. After that I filled out a background check paper and then was handed an Inventory Associate sheet that I signed. While going through all of this I figured I was pretty much hired and I am as long as I past a drug screen, which I did and pass a background check which I am waiting on. The manager said it could take three days to two weeks and not to worry if not called in a few days. But I know I'll pass it, so not worried after that I will be called for orientation and I'll work from 4pm to 1am. So it seems everywhere is different and thought mine was pretty simple compared to others I've read on here.

Georgia on April 21, 2013:

Each store does the interview hiring process slightly different. At my store, you get 1st interview usually with an hourly supervisor then the second interview with management; if you pass those later they call you in for background check, drug test, and they call your reference while waiting for the tests to come back. after you successfully pass them, they'll call you for a job offer and orientation is usually the following. orientation is one day. from interview to orientation; 3 weeks... yeah my store is slow...

I was called to set up an interview on friday and set it up for monday. Got there early and was seen . There questions were behavioral scenarios and about past experiences. I was a little nervouse and tried to hide it. I finished with my first interview and was told to wait for a second interview. About 15 minutes later had a second interview it seemed okay but i was told that they would call me back. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? I don't know if I got the job or not. I was there for and hour and 15 minutes is that a good sign? I heard it was good to get a second interview since it shows that they are interested in you. But its been a day and still no response. UGH this is so much stress!!

Bmn on March 13, 2013:

Had my 1 st interview on March 1st. Asked me 7 questions & we went over at least 6 pages of info (agreement of drug testing, hr availability & so on). Wasn't told about other applicants & the manager said that they will be calling me for the 2nd interview.

Still waiting.

Would they call you either for the 2nd interview or thank you again & the position(s) are filled?

The manager said "Good Luck" to me along w/ 5 other workers.

Would that be a good sign?

So I had my first interview today for a seasonal position. I was told she had 2 other applicants and that they would call me if I'm offered the position. Is the process the same for seasonal meaning do they do 2nd and 3rd interviews?

So this is how it went for me i applied for walmart like so many times during this year 2012 2 weeks ago on weds morning i receive a call from them asking me if i was able to come in for a job interview so i did when i went in i waited for like 10 minutes before i was seen by the dep manager she asked me like 5 to 6 simple questions... she said to me thank you for coming and said walmart would call me for another interview 1 day after they called me in for a 2nd interview with the store manager so i went in again it was like 5 q's and it only took less then 30 min. so at the end she asked if i had any questions for her so i asked if hired when will i be contacted she said later on today which meant friday or monday so ofcourse i went home waited that friday sat sun mon tues and finally wed morning i get a call asking if i could come in for a 3 interview i said yes lol i thought i would be hired after the 2nd interview.... that same day i went in i wait for like 30 min then they make me read and sign some background papers and stuff they give me a paper to go get a drug test the young lady said i had 24 hours to take the test if not i would be discualified as a candidate for the position so as of now im waiting for them to call me back the girl said to me it would take them about a week to get my drug and background results i guess that after that i will be set for orientation and then given my work schedule ???

Kind of overboard on the interview process, for just pennies about minumum wage don't you think?

sharbis on May 29, 2012:

I am in the middle of the hiring process at Walmart. I started applying about 9 months ago and reapplied every few months. A couple weeks ago I once again reapplied and got a call for an interview. I had 2 back to back interviews with 2 different people who each asked me 5 similar questions all of which had to do with my experience in how I have dealt with conflict in my past. Nothing was asked about why they should hire me or what I could do for Walmart. I've been a stay at home mom for the past 20 years and so basically have no outside work experience. I didn't think I did that great on answering their questions either, but they called me back to set up a job offer and drug test. Today I will be returning a missed call to them to set this up.

Dang90210 on May 29, 2012:

I know I was in tier 2 i apply on may 7 no Phone call I can't wait too take the assessment test again

What do you do for orientation at Walmart?

Filling out forms, learning about Walmart the company, and its offerings to employees (Employee Assistance for higher education, free second language courses, track to management, etc.). You'll also be doing a few computer courses to test your knowledge about how the store runs and some in your specific area as well.

How long does it take for orientation at Walmart?

Employee orientation at Walmart should last no more than two days. In most cases, employee orientation takes place over a single eight hours day but may be spread out into two sessions of four hours each.
