Who did the Bears draft yesterday

Round 2 (No. 39 overall) - Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington: They make their inaugural pick of this draft by taking a solid corner, one who can play outside or in the slot and augments the league's third-ranked pass defense. Gordon, the latest in a long line of excellent UW DBs, probably moves into a starting role on the outside while recent veteran signing Tavon Young stays in the slot. Draft tracker

Round 2 (48, from Chargers) - Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State: He feels like a Chicago player, a DB who can bring the wood. But Brisker can do more than that, another safety who's able to play deep at the line of scrimmage or in the slot. He should start Day 1 at strong safety. This selection was obtained courtesy of the Khalil Mack trade earlier this year. Draft tracker

Round 3 (71) - Velus Jones, Jr., WR, Tennessee: Caught 62 passes last year but might make his mark as a return man first for Chicago. Still, a guy with 4.31 speed is a guy QB Justin Fields will want on the field with the offense. Draft tracker

The Bears do not have a first-round pick in the draft because they traded their No. 7 pick to the Giants. This trade came in 2021 so the Bears could draft up in the first round and select quarterback Justin Fields.

However, it is possible that Chicago could trade up again this year as it did last year.

This offseason, the Bears lost two of their star players: linebacker Khalil Mack to the Chargers and wide receiver Allen Robinson to the Rams. Chicago gained a second round pick from the Chargers in the Mack trade.

Because of the Robinson deal, the Bears are also in need of a lead wide receiver. They still have Darnell Mooney and Byron Pringle, who they signed from the Chiefs, but there is still a major hole after Robinson’s departure.

Chicago’s draft begins in the second round with the No. 39 pick. Here is how the Bears’ draft has turned out thus far (to be updated during NFL draft):

  • Round 2, Pick 39: Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington
  • Round 2, Pick 48 (from Chargers): Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State
  • Round 3, Pick 71: Velus Jones Jr., WR, Tennessee
  • Round 5, Pick 168 (from Bills): Braxton Jones, OT, Southern Utah
  • Round 5, Pick 174 (from Bengals): Dominique Robinson, LB, Miami (OH)
  • Round 6, Pick 186: Zachary Thomas, OT, San Diego State
  • Round 6, Pick 203 (from Bills): Trestan Ebner, RB, Baylor
  • Round 6, Pick 207 (from Niners via Jets and Texans): Doug Kramer, C, Illinois
  • Round 7, Pick 226 (from Giants via Bengals): Ja’Tyre Carter, OG, Southern
  • Round 7, Pick 254 (Compensatory): Elijah Hicks, S, California
  • Round 7, Pick 255 (Compensatory): Trenton Gill, P, NC State

The 2022 NFL draft begins with the first round on Thursday, April 28 at 8 p.m. ET. The second and third rounds take place on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. Rounds four through seven take place on Saturday, beginning at noon.

Here is a list of every pick Poles made in his first draft with the Bears. Listed are the round, overall pick number, player name, position and school.

There was some speculation the Bears might try to trade into the first round to land a wide receiver. An early run at the position might have staved that off.

Instead, the Bears made their first three picks as scheduled.

Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington

The first pick they used to land Washington cornerback Kyler Gordon. Aside from Jaylon Johnson, the Bears lacked quality players at the position and he fills an immediate need and could be an immediate starter.

Gordon didn't allow a touchdown pass in his 18 career starts and is versatile, comfortable playing on the inside and outside.

Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State

Cornerback was a position many expected the Bears to address with one of their Day 2 picks, but safety wasn't. The Bears next pick was Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker.

The Bears needed a safety to pair with Eddie Jackson, but it was viewed as less pressing than wide receiver or offensive line. But with Brisker still sitting on the board when the Bears went on the clock, Poles couldn't resist.

And like Gordon, Brisker brings versatility to the defense as a safety. He can line up all over the field and according to PFF, he did. Over the past three seasons, Brisker took 668 snaps lined up deep, 690 snaps in the box and 332 snaps in the slot.

Velus Jones Jr., WR, Tennessee

With the Bears' lone third-round pick, Poles selected Tennessee wide receiver Velus Jones Jr.

Like the two defensive players before him, Jones is versatile. The Bears envision using Jones in a variety of offensive roles like Cordarrelle Patterson.

And Jones was the SEC Special Teams Player of the Year after returning 24 kickoffs for 628 yards and one touchdown and 18 punts for 272 yards.

Braxton Jones, OT, Southern Utah

The Bears finally drafted an offensive lineman with their first pick on Day 3. The Bears made four trades to move down and collect picks before selecting Braxton Jones of Southern Utah.

During his collegiate career, Jones allowed just three sacks on 921 sacks.

Dominique Robinson, DE, Miami (OH)

The Bears went back to the defensive side of the ball with their next pick, selecting Miami (OH) defensive end Dominique Robinson.

Robinson converted from wide receiver to defensive end during his collegiate career. In 15 games as a pass rusher between 2020 and 2021, Robinson racked up 6.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

Zachary Thomas, OT, San Diego State

Poles drafted another offensive tackle in the sixth round, San Diego State's Zachary Thomas. In 12 games at left tackle, Thomas allowed three sacks and eight hurries in 382 drop backs.

Trestan Ebner, RB, Baylor

The Bears added another offensive weapon, Baylor running back Trestan Ebner.

Ebner was a first-team all Big-12 kickoff returner in 2022 and the Big 12's Special Teams Player of the Year. He will be buried on the Bears' depth chart at running back but can make an impact on special teams.

That gives the Bears two players who won returner of the year awards in their respective conferences.

Doug Kramer, C, Illinois

With the No. 207 pick in the Poles selected a Hinsdale native, Illinois center Doug Kramer.

As a senior, Kramer was named to the All-Big Ten second team. Pro Football Focus ranked Kramer the 26th-best center in the country. He also was a Campbell Trophy Semifinalist.

In 2021, Kramer allowed zero sacks and just three hurries in 388 pass block snaps.

Ja'Tyre Carter, G, Southern

Ja'Tyre Carter became the fourth offensive lineman drafted by the Bears on Day 3. Carter primarily played tackle in college but according to Bears scout Breck Ackley the team views him as a guard in the NFL.

Elijah Hicks, S, Cal

Hicks started as a cornerback, but switched to safety after the 2019 season. Last season he racked up an incredible 72 tackles in 12 games. He was also a takeaway machine, with three interceptions and four forced fumbles.

Hicks was named First-Team All-Pac-12 and was recognized as Cal’s Defensive MVP in 2021.

Trenton Gill, P, NC State

The Bears needed to replace longtime punter Pat O'Donnell, who signed with the Green Bay Packers this offseason.

Gill was a First Team All-ACC player. In 2022, Gill led the ACC with an average of 45.1 yards per punt and led the conference twice in yards per punt.
