It's a question that has plagued fans for many years – but with 10 seasons and 236 episodes worth of storylines, it's a complicated piece of math.

Luckily, one brave fan has sifted through all the episodes and done the math, so you don't have to.

Before the piece of research we're about to present to you, it was thought that Ross and Monica Gellar, Rachel Green, Chandler Bing, Phoebe Buffay and Joey Tribbiani had 85 sexual partners all together.

This number was compiled by Mike D’Avria for Vulture, who read every outline and looked at the guest star cast list for every episode.

However, these were sexual partners who actually appeared on the show. Mike admitted "the number could be way higher".

Later a Redditor claimed that he had worked out the actual number, which is indeed way higher.

After analysing each episode, he claimed the six main characters had approximately 135 sexual partners.

Remember to take this with a pinch of salt, because it includes possible/alluded to sexual partners. This means the Redditor included some more questionable partners, like if someone said "I dated a guy once...".

Confirmed sex counts as 1 in his equation, while 0.5 is a sexual partner that is alluded to.

Here is the full breakdown:

Chandler: 10.5 sex partners
Ross: 14 sex partners
Monica: 14.5 sex partners
Rachel: 15.5 sex partners
Phoebe: 32.5 sex partners
Joey: 51.5 sex partners

It will come to no surprise that according to these figures, Joey had the most sexual partners, with 51.5.

You might remember some of them, like Lori, which led to him being cast as Dr Drake Ramorey. But the Redditor also included more questionable ones, like Lorraine.

There is also reference to Joey dating a stripper, but nothing to prove they have sex – so they have counted as 0.5.

Matthew Perry's Chandler had the lowest number of sexual partners, having slept with 10 women throughout the 10 series.

This definitely fits in with the character's persona, who was a bit awkward around women.

Among them was obviously Janice, who he notoriously kept going back to before settling down with Monica.

Janice also had a fling with Ross, who slept with 14 people during the 10 seasons.

He also hooked up with Phoebe's bald friend Bonnie and palaeontologist Charlie.

Rachel also had her fair share of conquests, including men played by Bruce Willis and Tate Donovan.

Meanwhile, Phoebe hooked up with Ursula's fiancé, who was played by future Oscar winner Sean Penn.

Monica is believed to have slept with over 14 people, including Dr Tim Burke, Tom Selleck's character's son.

Chandler had the most screen appearances (1400), Seth found, using the rule that only a scene in which a character speaks a line counts as an appearance. Both Rachel (1370) and Ross (1330) were very close behind, though.
