New Music Friday this week is full of rap, with two female powerhouses stepping up to the plate for an album release and single, respectively, while a rising male rapper has returned with a brand new project.

Megan Thee Stallion announced and released her new project Traumazine in a span of just hours. Despite a quick release, the set sees the Houston rapper at her most vicious — and sometimes incredibly vulnerable — as seen on fiery tracks “Plan B” and “Ungrateful,” which then mellows into the soul bearing “Anxiety,” creating a multi-faceted body of work.

Nicki Minaj‘s “Super Freaky Girl” sees the rap icon doing what she does best — remixing old hits and reintroducing them to a new generation of fans. Where her 2014 track “Anaconda” revisited Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” “Freaky Girl” employs Rick James’ “Super Freak.” Minaj gleefully raps over the sample, which contains classic lyrics about her sexual prowess and of course, how no other girls in the game can compare.

Rod Wave‘s third LP, SoulFly, debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart last year, and now, the tender yet melodic rapper has returned his follow up, Beautiful Mind. The 24-track, 68-minute set further cements Wave’s sound and personality, which sees him embracing complex thoughts and tough memories over intense beats.

Anitta, NIKI, Ronald Isley & The Isley Brothers also return this week, but which new music release is your favorite? Vote in our poll below or enter in your personal favorite.

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion storm the Hot 100 this week with their sexually-charged and insanely catchy new single “WAP,” which doesn’t just rise to No. 1 on the all-encompassing chart, it debuts there with the largest stream and sales sum of 2020.

The track is the fourth No. 1 for Cardi and just the second for Stallion, and by landing another chart-topper, the latter has joined a very exclusive club and made history.

With a second Hot 100 ruler to her credit, Stallion is now just the third female rapper in history to reach the summit on the all-genre tally more than once. She snagged her first champion just a few months ago with “Savage,” which jumped to the peak position after weeks inside the top 10 following the release of a new version which featured both singing and rapping vocals by Beyoncé.

Among all female rappers, Cardi leads the way with the most No. 1s ever, and she’s outpacing her competition two-to-one. The hip-hop superstar has now claimed four chart-toppers, including the new chart controller “WAP.” She reached the Hot 100’s penthouse for the first time in 2017 with “Bodak Yellow,” which turned her from a rising talent and reality figure to a household name. She followed that up with two more leaders in 2018—her own “I Like It” with Bad Bunny and J Balvin and then as a featured act on Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You.”

Nicki Minaj became the second-ever female rapper to snag a second No. 1 hit on the Hot 100 earlier this year. In fact, before 2020, Minaj was one of the most successful names in the music business who still somehow hadn’t landed atop the tally, but that all changed a short time ago. The powerhouse claimed her first driver back in May alongside Doja Cat on the “Say So” remix, and then she repeated that feat with her first No. 1 debut, “Trollz,” which was a joint single with 6ix9ine. Those wins were only separated by a few weeks.

Only eight women known primarily for producing rap music have hit No. 1 on the Hot 100, and before this year began, that number was down at six. Just a few months ago, only one woman had reached the summit several times, but now she has company, and the club is growing all the time.

Hopefully, these successes have made it easier for other females in the hip-hop world, and it will likely only be a matter of time before another talented woman in that space scores her first chart-topper as well.
