This seems to be one of Polacco’s true stories, or one based on truth. On the inside front and back covers, there are many photos of the author with her brother at all different ages, and she dedicates the book to him.

This is a rather ordinary story of a younger sister wishing to best her older brother at something, anything. It does show the warm, close family relationships so common in Polacco’s picture books. I loved all the illustrations, especially the very last one, and the ones that show

This book was so brilliant and will easily relate to any child who has older or younger siblings who pick on them! Patricia Polacco has done an excellent job at both writing and illustrations her life with her older brother Richard and I loved how Patricia Polacco’s writing is so sweet natured that I was seriously feeling all cuddly inside whenever I read this book. I also loved the love/hate relationship between Patricia and Richard (which is what I always see in every book that describes your typical sibling rivalry) and I also loved what Richard does for Patricia at the very end of the book (I will not tell you what happened) for it showed that no matter how much Patricia and Richard argue with each other, they still love each other! I also loved seeing some the family traditions that was shown in Patricia’s family, such as when Patricia and her grandmother saw a shooting star in the sky, Patricia’s grandmother spitted twice between her fingers and then slapped her chest whenever she is making a wish and that was the part of the story I truly favored. Patricia Polacco’s illustrations are extremely beautiful, especially of the images of Patricia and Richard themselves as Patricia is always seen wearing pigtails throughout the book, while her brother Richard has red hair, wears glasses and has freckles on his face. I also loved the way that Patricia Polacco illustrated the facial expressions on each character as they look realistic and hilarious at the same time. I really loved the smug looks that Patricia shows whenever her brother teases her about not being able to do things that he can and I also loved Richard’s goofy grins on his face every time he beats Patricia at something. But my favorite images from this book were on the endpapers of this book as the endpapers show real life photos of Patricia Polacco’s family and her older brother Richard.

Overall, “My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother” is a really cute story about sibling rivalry that every child will easily relate to and also love for the rest of their lives! I would recommend this book to children ages four and up since there is nothing inappropriate in this book.

Patrica Polacco turns once again to her childhood (surprise, surprise) for inspiration in this engaging picture-book exploration of sibling rivalry, based on her relationship with her older brother Richard. Would Trisha ever beat her rotten redheaded older brother? And did she really want to...?

Although I wouldn't say that

My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother is one of my favorites, of Polacco's many autobiographical picture-books, I think it offers a very realistic depiction of a younger sibling's frustration, at always being 'behind' their elder brothers and sisters. Children in that position will undoubtedly identify with Trisha, and will (possibly) be comforted by the happy ending, and the idea that (eventually) they will be friends with their elder sibling. ...more

This is a good story (I am tempted to label it non-fiction) about the relationship between an older brother and a younger sister. It is very appropriate to read this with squabbling siblings, but it's also good for parents to read this and understand the love and loyalty that attaches siblings, despite their bickering at home.

As an only child, I am often confounded by our girls' behaviors toward one another - sometimes best friends, sometimes bitter enemies. This book offers some good insights

Polacco's stories come from the heart and are told so descriptively that it feels like you are a member of her family along for the ride. In this story, Patricia recalls her younger years and the rivalry between herself and her rotten redheaded older brother, Rich. Grating and annoying, he always seems to come out ahead. Trying to beat him at someone, Patricia rides the carnival carousel again, again and again as it goes round, and round, and round and round.

When she departs from the carousel she falls. When she awakes at home learning that her "rotten" brother rescued her.

From then on, she looks at him in a totally different way. The experience transforms rotten Richard into kind, other directed family member.

I've never read the Polacco books to a child, but I look forward to doing so. I especially like having several stories that focus on her own family. The kids will like to know that they're "true, not make-believe," and they'll like the picture of the family sleeping outside on a summer night.

And ... here is another example of an action with unintended consequences.

I love reading true stories to my nieces. I get to stop and say that yes, yes, yes - THIS story REALLY happened! And boy, is it fun!

She doesn't write picture books for the potty training crowd (unless they have a VERY good attention span), but for kids who can sit down through a whole book and be read to, the older end of the 4 - 8 age range. Keep this in mind when purchasing.

With that said, if your kid is in the right age range, this is THE book on siblings to get. (Because it's true, and also because it's a good story.) Poor Trisha. Her older brother is always outdoing her. Whatever he says he'll do more of than she will - he goes ahead and does it! And if she starts it, he STILL wins. (He's four years older than her, and he always will be, but did that have to make him so annoying?? Sheesh!)

When he says he'll pick more berries - he does. When she says she will eat more raw rhubarb - he still does. (And then it's rhubarb pie for dessert. Ugh, don't you just hate that?) She finally has to resort to making wishes.

Now, I find it interesting that when she stayed on the merry-go-round longer than her brother did, they didn't engage in the little "Can!" "Can't!" fight beforehand. Maybe if she'd told him of his intentions first, it would be quite a different story. Regardless, she stays on until she literally falls off and cuts her head open. And her brother saves her. (Awww.)

It's a great story, it really is, and very realistic. (That's because it's true, and also because she's a good author.) Love the arguments the siblings have - I've had more than a few of those in my life!

She cannot stand her rotten redheaded older brother Richard, who not only "looks weird" but can also do everything better than she can. He is fond of saying, "I'm four years older than you. Always have been and always will be."

And she does it - but with much different consequences than expected.

Recommended for those brave parents dealing with sibling rivalry.
Also - even if you don't have a sibling, you can still read it because it has some subtle messages: about goodness and kindness and also never to judge one person solely by his external demeanour.

This delightful book was probably written based off of one of Patricia's own life experiences. I can see her chuckling to herself as she pens the memorize of her older brother Richie. In her book Patricia characterizes her brother as a despicable villain who makes her life absolutely miserable, but in the end turns into a hero.
Patricia's illustrations add a perfect essence to the book. She draws her older brother looking deranged and almost demon like and she draws herself as an innocent little girl who is under the wrath of her brother. This detailed illustration puts the story into perspective on how she pictured her older brother.
Patricia wrote this book with love and devotion to her brother. While flipping through the pages I could sense the feeling of sibling rivalry mixed with love. While reading this book I though back to my own childhood when I teased my younger brothers and was perfectly awful to them.

At the end of the story, Patricia and her brother ended up getting along. This shows that siblings can also be friends.

It is important to be nice to your siblings for example in the book the brother did not like his younger sister but when she got hurt the older brother took care of Patricia. Also Patricia thanked the older brother and the older brother said “what a big brother is for”. I think that the lesson is that you should all ways be kind to your siblings and family and friends because it is what happen in the story.

I would recommend this to 3rd or 4th grade. This book has longer paragraphs per page and so it would be hard for grades lower to stay engaged and comprehend. I think this would be a good read though for a class. For the kids in the class that have siblings, it would be funny to hear what them and their siblings compete about. It would be a great book to get the kids engaged in and have them make feedback to the book and recap!

I read this with a classmate for an assignment. We had to analyze it in class. I did not think it was all too much fun to read, but it is very accurate of what it is like to have an older brother. Being an older brother I was able to go through this book and say to myself, " Yup I do that". It certainly has a steady build up to a climax. I do not know if i would recommend this realistic fiction unless you are just looking for a book to read to be busy.
