Who did the rams play in the super bowl

The Los Angeles Rams have secured their spot in Super Bowl LVI with a 20-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers, and for the second year in a row a team will play in the Super Bowl at their home stadium. Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and the Rams will take on Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl today live on NBC and Peacock with coverage beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET.

After closing out the regular season on a 5-2 run to secure first place in the NFC West with a 12-5 overall mark, the Los Angeles Rams are one win away from winning Super Bowl LVI. Super Bowl 2022 will be televised by NBC and will be available to stream live on Peacock or with the NBC Sports App.

Though the Rams recently played in Super Bowl LIII following the 2018 season, they have just four Super Bowl appearances in their history in the following seasons: 2018, 2001, 1999, 1979. The four appearances are tied with the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts for 11th on the NFL’s all-time list. In their four appearances, the Rams have posted a 1-3 record. The Rams, who were known as the St. Louis Rams from 1995 to 2015, made two Super Bowl appearances over the course of three years between 1999 and 2001, defeating the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV and then falling to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI in Tom Brady‘s first career Super Bowl appearance. The Rams have faced the Patriots twice on the sport’s biggest stage, losing both contests.

With the Super Bowl scheduled to be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles this year, Matthew Stafford and the Rams are trying to become the second team to win the Lombardi Trophy on their home turf in as many years (Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl at Raymond James Stadium following the 2020 season).

  • 2018 season: Lost Super Bowl LIII vs. the New England Patriots, 13-3

When the Rams met the Patriots in Super Bowl LII, it was the first time they had reached the Super Bowl while in Los Angeles since 1980 as the team’s previous two appearances came when they were based in St. Louis. The game was expected to be dominated by offense on both sides, but the defenses stepped up. Neither team scored a touchdown until the fourth quarter.

The Rams entered the second half scoreless and had managed just 57 yards of offense. It was not until the final quarter that Brady threw two passes to Rob Gronkowski to set up a two-yard score by Sony Michel. Brady threw for 262 yards in the game while former Rams QB Jared Goff threw for 229 yards and one interception.

With 16 combined points between both teams, the game became the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in NFL history, dethroning the Miami Dolphins’ 14-7 win over Washington in 1973. Following Super Bowl LII, the next six lowest-scoring Super Bowls came within the first nine iterations of the game.

Rams most recent Super Bowl win

  • 1999 season: Won Super Bowl XXXIV vs. the Tennessee Titans, 23-16

Super Bowl XXXIV featured “The Greatest Show on Turf” offense, a nickname for the record-breaking Rams offense of the 1999, 2000 and 2001 seasons. During this time frame, the Rams offense produced record-scoring yardage, three NFL MVP honors and two Super Bowl appearances.

The Rams offense was quiet in the first half against the Titans though, tallying just nine points off of three field goals. After scoring a touchdown, the Rams took a 16-0 lead into the third quarter, but the Titans scored 16 unanswered points to tie the game in the fourth quarter. The Rams re-took the lead when wide receiver Isaac Bruce scored a 73-yard touchdown, but the Super Bowl became remembered for its final play. The Titans reached the Rams’ 10-yard line with six seconds remaining in the game, but Rams LB Mike Jones tackled Titans WR Kevin Dyson one yard short of the goal line to prevent a game-tying score. The play has since become known as “One Yard Short.”

The Rams are once again in a position to compete for a Super Bowl.

It has been just three years since Los Angeles last appeared in the Super Bowl, and much of the team remains the same. Sean McVay is still the head coach. Cooper Kupp continues to establish himself as one of, if not the best receiver in the NFL. Aaron Donald continues to be a problem for opposing offensive lines.

But now Los Angeles has Matthew Stafford, who has transformed the passing attack into one of the league's best as the Rams head into their NFC Championship game with the fifth-most passing yards in the league (4,642). In order to return to the Super Bowl, they first will have to snap a six-game losing streak to the NFC West rival 49ers to claim the conference championship.

Here's all you need to know about the Rams' Super Bowl history as they prepare to face the 49ers in the hopes of once again being the NFC's representative in the Super Bowl.

When is the last time the Rams went to a Super Bowl?

You don't have to flip too far back in the history books to find the last time the Rams were in the Super Bowl.

Following the 2018 season, McVay's second at the helm of the team, the Rams reached Super Bowl 53, where they faced off against the Patriots. In what remains to date the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history at just 13-3, the Patriots pulled off the win, officially claiming title wins against both the St. Louis and Los Angeles iterations of the Rams.

The Rams has only once prior to 2019 been to the Super Bowl as a Los Angeles-based team. That came back in 1980, when Terry Bradshaw and the Steelers won 31-19. The Rams brought a title to St. Louis in 2000 under Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk, but lost two years later to New England in the first Tom Brady-Bill Belichick title.

How many Super Bowls have the Rams won?

The Rams have claimed just one title in four trips to the Super Bowl. Back on Jan. 30, 2000, St. Louis edged out Tennessee despite Titans running back Eddie George scoring third- and fourth-quarter touchdowns to tie the game, when Warner hit Isaac Bruce for a go-ahead, 73-yard score to put the Rams up 23-16 with 1:54 left.

Since then, the Rams have been foiled twice by the Patriots, first in 2002 and then again in 2019.

How many franchises have won Super Bowls for different cities?

Only one other franchise has brought the Lombardi Trophy home to two different cities: the Colts.

The Baltimore Colts lost Super Bowl 3 to the Jets, but won Super Bowl 5 against the Cowboys. The Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984, and didn't appear in the Super Bowl again until Peyton Manning helped the team win Super Bowl 41 against the Bears.

Should the Rams win the title this year, they would have then brought a trophy to both St. Louis and Los Angeles.

The Rams have added yet another Lombardi Trophy to their trophy case by beating the Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl 56 on Sunday.

Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Von Miller, Aaron Donald and Co. staved off the upset-minded Cincinnati squad — one still looking for its first Super Bowl victory — for the franchise's first such victory in more than 20 years. It is also the first one for the city of Los Angeles, the Rams' on-again home after a 20-year stint in St. Louis.

The Rams hadn't exactly enjoyed consistent success on the sport's biggest stage, however. The same is true for members of this year's Rams squad, many of whom were on the roster the last time Los Angeles made the Super Bowl.

With that, The Sporting News breaks down the Rams' Super Bowl history, both in Los Angeles and in St. Louis, with the team finally adding another Lombardi Trophy:

Rams Super Bowl history

When is the last time the Rams went to a Super Bowl?

Prior to Super Bowl 56, the last time the Rams made this stage was in Super Bowl 53, when a strong defensive performance by Donald and Co. was overshadowed by the Patriots' own stalwart performance in a 13-3 loss.

Los Angeles (13-3) limited New England (11-5) to just 13 points on the day, but still gave up 407 yards — 253 of which came through the air — in the defeat. The defense also struggled to contain running back Sony Michel (18 rushes, 94 yards, one touchdown), receiver Julian Edelman (10 receptions, 141 yards) and tight end Rob Gronkowski (six catches, 87 yards).

The game went into the fourth quarter tied at 3-3 before the Patriots rattled off 10 unanswered points — a Michel 2-yard run and Stephen Gostkowski 41-yard field goal — in the last 9:43 minutes of play.

The Rams' offense struggles were even more pronounced. They suffered five three-and-outs and only ventured into New England territory five times out of 12 drives. Los Angeles never made the Patriots' red zone and only got as close as the opposing 26-yard line.

Starting quarterback Jared Goff completed 19 of 38 passes (50 percent) for 229 yards and a crucial interception with 4:17 remaining in the game. The Rams had second-and-10 from New England's 27 on what was a potential game-tying drive. Instead, Tom Brady took advantage of the turnover to engineer a field goal drive and put the game out of reach.

The Rams kicked a 48-yard field goal with 5 seconds remaining, though Greg Zuerlein's attempt was no good. The final play of the game was a Brady kneel down in what was his sixth Super Bowl victory.

How many Super Bowls have the Rams won?

The LA Rams have two Super Bowl wins, with their most recent appearance improving them to 2-3 all time on the stage. Prior to appearances in Super Bowls 53 and 56, the LA Rams' last appearance came in Super Bowl 14 on Jan. 20, 1980 — a 31-19 loss to the Steelers.

It should be noted that the St. Louis Rams have one Super Bowl win in two appearances.

Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt managed to beat Steve McNair, Eddie George and the Titans 23-16 in Super Bowl 34, in which the most famous play was Rams linebacker Mike Jones tackling wide receiver Kevin Dyson a yard short of a game-tying touchdown on the game's final play.

The Rams were unable to repeat two seasons later on the same stage, as St. Louis fell 20-17 to Tom Brady and the Patriots on a last-second 48-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri. The loss dropped the Rams to 1-2 in the Super Bowl and kickstarted the Patriots dynasty under Brady; it was the first of three New England Super Bowls over four seasons.

That means little to the current iteration of the Rams and their fans now, of course: Los Angeles jumped out to a 13-3 lead against the Bengals and managed to claw its way back to a victory after allowing Cincinnati to go ahead 20-13 two possessions into the second half.

Matthew Stafford wasn't perfect, but completed 26 of 40 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns to two interceptions in the victory. Receiver Cooper Kupp was his favorite target, nabbing eight catches for 92 yards and two scores; Odell Beckham Jr. also played a role — despite exiting the game with a knee injury in the second quarter — by catching two passes for 52 yards and his own score.

Aaron Donald was the biggest playmaker on defense, tallying four tackles (two for loss), two sacks and three quarterback hits. A'Shawn Robinson (one), Leonard Floyd (one), Ernest Robinson (one) and Von Miller (two) combined with Donald to tie a Super Bowl-record seven sacks against Burrow and the Bengals.
