THE BATMAN SPOILERS AHEAD

Barry Keoghan has broken his silence after he was revealed as the mystery prisoner at the end of the latest Batman movie. The character was previously credited as Unseen Arkham Prisoner in the film, which stars Robert Pattinson as the titular superhero and Paul Dano as the villain Riddler. However, The Batman director Matt Reeves later shared that the jail inmate talking to Riddler at the end of the movie was a popular fan favourite Batman villain, as many had theorised earlier. Matt confirmed that the character was indeed the Joker, seen only in one scene. Barry has now opened up about his portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime. He also spoke about filming another scene for the movie that did not make it to the final cut.

In an interview with Esquire Middle East8, when Barry was asked to comment on Matt Reeves as a filmmaker, "He’s brilliant, man. And Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark especially and together were amazing to me– really, really amazing to me. And, you know, getting to be part of the Batman universe is [a huge deal for me]. I’m a fanboy of these movies, and especially the Batman universe. So be to be in that world, I’m still pinching myself. He’s a filmmaker I hugely admire as well. And to get to walk alongside him and see how he works, and seeing much like Chloe Zhao, how comfortable he makes you on set, and he gives you the time you need and what you want. I’m in such a blessed position."

Barry also spoke about working with Paul Dano in the scene, that shows Paul's Riddler wallowing in his cell after a failed attempt at mass murder. Barry's The Joker, whose face is only partially seen, is heard consoling Riddler, Barry said about Paul, "Paul is–I’m a huge, huge fan of Paul. He’s such a good dude as well. I’ve watched all of his movies, like Prisoners and stuff like that. People say that we’re kind of like as well, and I’m like, are we?" Barry further said that he is also waiting for Matt Reeves to release the extra scene that they had filmed for the movie.

It is yet to be seen if Barry's version of Joker will return to the world of Batman again. Matt had previously clarified that the scene does not mean that the actor will be seen as the Joker in any more Batman movies. Matt had told Variety, “It’s not an Easter egg scene. It’s not one of those end credits Marvel or DC scenes where it’s going, like, ‘Hey, here’s the next movie!’ In fact, I have no idea when or if we would return to that character in the movies.” The Joker has previously been played by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and Joaquin Phoenix in different films.

The Batman has collected 22 crore at the Indian box office over the first weekend after its release on March 4. This is Robert Pattinson's first time playing Batman, a role that has previously been played on film by Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck.

Who played joker in the batman 2022

“The Batman” director Matt Reeves released a deleted scene from his superhero epic on Thursday featuring Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader facing off against his classic nemesis, the Joker, played by Barry Keoghan. The scene is available after visiting a website that mimics the word puzzles posed by the Riddler (Paul Dano) in the movie.

As Reeves explained to Variety in an interview in February, the scene follows Batman’s discovery that the Riddler has killed the Gotham City police commissioner, leaving behind another of his cryptic notes addressed to the Batman. Unnerved by the Riddler’s interest in him, Batman decides to seek out insight into what makes the Riddler tick.

“I thought he would be really insecure about this and he’d probably want to find some way to get into the [Riddler’s] mindset, like in ‘Manhunter’ or ‘Mindhunter’ — this idea of profiling somebody, so you can predict his next move,” Reeves said.

The filmmaker liked the idea of suggesting to the audience that Gotham is rife with villains just on the edge of the story, and that Keoghan’s Joker is one of the first enemies Batman captures.

“Almost our anniversary, isn’t it?” Joker tells Batman in the scene.

Noted Reeves: “You realize that they have a relationship, and that this guy obviously did something, and Batman somehow got him into Arkham.”

Batman pushes Joker for reasons why Riddler is doing what he’s doing, and why he’s leaving notes for Batman at all of his crimes.

“Maybe he’s a fan of yours?” Joker says. “Or maybe he’s got a grudge against you, too. Maybe you’re the main course.”

The scene crescendos with Joker taunting Batman with the unsettling truth that there’s a part of him that agrees with Riddler’s decision to dispatch Gotham leaders who are mired in corruption.

“I think somewhere, deep down, you’re just terrified, because you’re not sure he’s wrong,” Joker says, dissolving into cackles.

In his earlier interview with Variety, Reeves went far more in depth into why he ultimately deleted this scene but kept a follow-up scene a the end of “The Batman” in which Joker and Riddler connect in adjacent cells in the Arkham State Hospital, and how he developed the Joker’s look with Keoghan and makeup artist Michael Marino.

You can watch the five-minute deleted Joker scene below.

The Joker character is almost always a safe bet in live action films,'The Batman' introduced the character in one of the final scenes of the movie but it was only a few moments alongside Paul Dano's 'Riddler' character. After the film was released, director Mat Reeves revealed the existence of a scene between Joker and the Batman at Arkham Asylum that he decided to leave out of the final cut. It was finally released on Thursday but the character's fame is far stronger than the actor who portrays him. Matt Reeves did take his time choosing the next Joker, especially with how fresh the Joaquin Phoenix portrayal has been.

Heath Ledger set the standard ridiculously high when he won the Academy Award in 2008 after his portrayal in 'The Dark Knight'. Keoghan is still unknown by the majority of the world, his film curriculum is quite short as he began his career in 2011. At only 29 years old, Keoghan made the jump to stardom after his portrayal in the 2016 film, 'Mammal'. However, 'The Killing of a Sacred Dear' was the breakthrough performance he had been expecting and 2018 was when he made it happen. But that was the conquering of the local film circuit, Barry still needed to conquer the toughest of arenas: Hollywood.

Koeghan goes from Nolan muse to the Comic Book world.

His performance as George Mills in the World War II epic, 'Dunkirk' granted him the keys to Hollywood he had been expecting. That 2017 film was the one that lured both Marvel and DC for two roles that would change his career forever. After playing Druig in the obscure 'Eternals' film from Chloe Zhao, it wastruly his time to shine as Matt Reeves' Joker in 'The Batman' film. A well-kept secret that was revealed only months before the film opened in 2022. He confirmed he was cast in the project but never revealed the character he was playing. After Thursday's full scene, we now know his portrayal of the character will be extremely different from what the world has seen before.

It's the question Batman fans have been pondering for a while: does the Joker feature in the latest superhero film?

The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, picks up with Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) in his second year fighting crime.

However, Bruce faces one of his most deadly adversaries yet in the form of a serial killer targeting citizens of Gotham City.

This villain, who leaves puzzles and clues in his wake, is known as The Riddler (Paul Dano)...

Along the way in his journey, Batman will come across nightclub worker and cat burglar Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), influential gangster Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and the Penguin himself, Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot (Colin Farrell).

The Batman cast also includes Jeffrey Wright as police officer Lieutenant James Gordon, Peter Sarsgaard as corrupt district attorney Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Real, and Andy Serkis as Batman’s loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth.

However, there is one additional cast member who is creating much chatter.

Eternals star Barry Keoghan features in the films, but who exactly is he playing? Could he be playing The Joker?

In the meantime, for your guide to all of the Batman movies and how to watch in order see our explainer here.

**Spoiler warning for The Batman**

Well, yes, Barry Keoghan is portraying The Joker.

Despite initial reports that Keoghan would be playing Gotham City Police Department officer Stanley Merkel in the film, the Irish actor only appears in one scene towards the end of the film.

The character that Keoghan portrays is credited as 'Unnamed Arkham Inmate' but his maniacal laugh, discoloured hair and general encouragement of chaos towards The Riddler/Edward Nashton in the closing scene in Arkham Asylum leaves little doubt about who the character is.

The inmate's appearance is mostly obscured as he is viewed through a peephole in his cell door but what we can see certainly resembles the iconic character known as the Clown Prince of Crime.

The character had been due to appear more in the film too, according to director Matt Reeves.

Speaking to IGN, Reeves revealed that The Batman would have gone to the Joker at Arkham for aid in profiling the Riddler in a scene that was cut from the film but will release at some point.

Comparing the scene to the iconic visits of Clarice Starling to Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, Reeves revealed: "He goes to see another killer that he's clearly had an experience with in these first two years. And this killer in this story is not yet the character that we come to know, right?”

"So everybody's in their infancy. So in the comics, these characters often declare their alter egos in response to the fact that there's a Batman out there. And so here, we have a Joker who's not yet the Joker."

Perhaps we have a villain for the proposed sequels to The Batman already in our midst?

Reeves hinted that this is only the early days of the character and while he may not be the focus of a follow-up he would likely appear.

He's also apparently not fallen into a vat of chemicals or is scarred like the Joker in The Dark Knight (2008), but instead is suffering from a "congenital disease" and can't stop smiling.

Prior to the film's release, The Hollywood Reporter addressed internet rumours that Barry Keoghan could be playing The Joker in the film.

They penned on their newsletter on 11th December: “Last month, the internet went a little crazy about Barry Keoghan maybe, maybe not, playing the Joker in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman.

“Don’t look to us to answers on that one. But we can tell you this: Multiple sources tell us that Warner Bros has been testing two different cuts of The Batman, one with a certain actor, one without. And the final test screening occurred last week, with the decision now made as to which version the studio likes, says one source.”

Keoghan is also known for his role as Druig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the film Eternals.

Recent portrayals of The Joker have included Joaquin Phoenix in Joker and Jared Leto in Suicide Squad and Zack Snyder's Justice League.

The Batman is out now in cinemas.
