Elden Ring Base Story still not figured out completely ?

Even after almost 1 month its still kinda unclear what actually triggerd the events happening in Elden Ring.Story before the game starts -> which leads to the game itself:-----------------------------Ranni the witch stole the rune of death , made a special dagger out of it and together with some Assasins(black knifes) killed Godwynhowever things didnt go as planned and not only godwyns soul died , but she lost her bodywhen she killed him.Marika was so upset about losing her loved son , that she shatterd the Elden RingGreater Will (Outer world God) was so angry about her shattering the Elden Ring that he imprisoned her in the ErdtreeWith Marika gone and nobody knowing where she is... there is no King in the lands between. So her children all see opportunity and grasp for the thronenobody wins so nobody is worthy in the eyes of Greater WillThats why Greater Will wants a new champion (which could be you if proofen worthy)-------------------------------Game beginsThe one thing i didnt understand from the beginning is:Why tf did Ranni kill Godwyn ?what does this even achieve ?Ranni is the child of Radagon and Rennala. She hates the Greater Will and Golden OrderIts also likley she is kinda hating on Marika a bit since Radagon left her mom for Marika.(I think nobody besides us players know that Marika and Radagon is the same person)But i still dont get her overall plan ?She wants Greater Will to end his reign over the lands ?Therefore she wants to kill all demigods that are his allys ?And then she does a testkill or what ?How is she thinking she could destroy Radahn or Malenia when she starts with Godwyn and others get aware that somebody is trying to kill them ?

That whole idea that Ranni killed Godwyn never mades sense to me and still doesnt ?

Why did ranni kill godwyn

Protagonist Tarnished (Age of the Stars ending)

"The person who orchestrated the Night of the Black Knives. Lunar Princess Ranni. One of the children born to King Consort Radagon and his first wife, Renalla. Demigod and sister to General Radahn and Praetor Rykard."

Ranni, sometimes also referred to as the Snow Witch, is a mysterious woman with four arms in Elden Ring.

At one point after receiving Torrent from Melina, Ranni will approach the Tarnished at a site of grace, asking if they indeed had the spectral steed. She'll then give the Tarnished the Spirit Calling Bell, noting Torrent's former master had entrusted it to her to give it to the next owner.

Lore

Lunar Princess Ranni is the daughter of Radagon, a champion of the Golden Order, and Queen Rennala, head of the Carian royal family and the Academy of Raya Lucaria. Ranni had two siblings, Radahn and Rykard. Ranni was born an empyrean, meaning she had the potential to one day succeed the divine Queen Marika. The Two Fingers chose her as a potential successor and granted her a shadow by the name of Blaidd, who was raised as her foster brother. Ranni grew up playing with Blaidd and Iji, a giant blacksmith who served the Carian royals.

Ranni had a master known simply as the "Snow Witch", who taught her cold-based spells and also to fear the "Dark Moon". At some ponit, Ranni's father left her mother to marry Queen Marika and assume the title of second Elden Lord. Ranni and her siblings were raised to demigod status by their new stepmother.

While the Two Fingers had chosen her, Ranni did not wish to be a puppet for the Greater Will and resented her empyrean fate. In order to escape her fate, Ranni plotted to slay her own empyrean flesh while sparing her soul. In order to do so, she stole a fragment of the Rune of Death from Maliketh, the Black Blade. She imbued the power of the rune into the blades of her assassins, all of whom were Numen women close to Queen Marika herself, and also gave a fragment to her brother Rykard. The assassins fell upon the royal capital in what would come to be known as the Night of Black Knives.

In order to assure only her body was slain, Ranni simultaneously had the assassins kill her step-brother Godwyn, killing him in spirit, while she killed herself in body. This marked the step-siblings as the first demigod casualties since Marika had ushered in the Age of the Erdtree. Ranni transfered her spirit into a doll said to be carved in the image of her former master, the Snow Witch.

At some point after the Night of Black Knives, Queen Marika shattered the Elden Ring. Ranni claimed a Great Rune, but appears to have largely remained outside of the conflict. As a consequence of her doll body, Ranni required extended periods of hibernation. Ranni withdrew from the world, hiding in the Carian Manor while her agents worked to bring about her plan of ridding the Lands Between of the influence of the Greater Will, while pursuing divine ascension on her own terms.

Long after the Shattering, when the Tarnished returned to the Lands Between, Ranni heard of a Tarnished champion hurtling about on a spectral steed. She met the champion, granting them a bell with which to call forth spirits entrusted to her by the steed's former master, before departing.

The Tarnished champion, for their own purposes, made their way into the Carian Manor and came face to face with Ranni once again. Ranni accepted the Tarnished into her service, and bid them to find a way into Nokron, the Eternal City, hoping to claim its treasure; a weapon with which she could kill the Two Fingers who had chosen her. The champion managed find the way into Nokron, and secured the city's treasure for Ranni, whereupon she departed to Nokstella, Eternal City. The champion found her there, now as a small doll. Ranni compelled the champion to rid her of the Shadows sent by the Two Fingers to kill her. With the last Shadow defeated, Ranni rewarded her champion with the keys to a chest containing a ring bestowed to her future consort, and was able to achieve her goal, slaying the Two Fingers.

Should the Tarnished champion find the ring and give it to Ranni, she will take the champion as her new consort, and reveal to them the full extent of her plan; to succeed Queen Marika as god and to usher in her "Age of the Dark Moon", removing her new order and godhood far from the Lands Between and journeying out into the stars. After defeating the Elden Beast, the Tarnished is able to usher in Ranni's age if they so choose.

Walkthrough

Ranni's quest is one of the most expansive of the game and intertwines with the quests of multiple other NPCs.

The first time Ranni can be encountered is at the Church of Elleh during night-time, after Melina has joined the Tarnished's journey. Ranni will refer to herself as "the witch Renna" and give the player the Spirit Calling Bell and Lone Wolf Ashes.

She plays a role in the fight against Queen Rennala, but this does not affect her questline.

Her second direct encounter is at Ranni's Rise, beyond the Caria Manor in Liurnia of the Lakes. How this encounter goes depends on whether or not the player has found the Black Knifeprint and given it to Rogier. Rogier will inform the Tarnished of Ranni's involvement in the Night of Black Knives and that they are to search for her Cursemark of Death as proof. If the dialogue with Rogier has happened, the player can only choose to confront Ranni about it. She will blatantly admit to the deed, but does not reveal the cursemark's location and sends the Tarnished away, upon which the player has to return to the Roundtable Hold, where Rogier suggests the Tarnished joins Ranni's service to locate the cursemark. When returning to Ranni and requesting to become her vassal, she immediately recognizes the obvious scheme, but allows it regardless. If Rogier's dialogue has not been done prior, the player can simply request to join Ranni's service right away.

In either case, you need to become one of Ranni's vassals in order to progress her quest. She first introduces you to her other vassals - Seluvis, Blaidd and War Counselor Iji, then sends you off on a mission with Blaidd to collect "the Hidden Treasure of Nokron", which is the Fingerslayer Blade. To reach Nokron, Eternal City however, you first have to defeat Starscourge Radahn (see: Blaidd's questline). Ranni also informs you that she is about to enter her slumber.

When returning with the Fingerslayer Blade, Ranni will be awake again and announces that she is going to leave soon and shortly thereafter disappears, but not before giving you the Carian Inverted Statue, which is needed to progress past the Carian Study Hall and reach the Divine Tower of Liurnia, where you will find the Cursemark of Death. The cursemark becomes relevant again in Fia's questline.

The next step is to use the gateway portal in Renna's Rise, not far from Ranni's Rise. From there you are sent to the Ainsel River, where there is a Miniature Ranni puppet in a coffin. You can choose to speak to the puppet repeatedly at the nearest grace and it turns out that Ranni is still possessing it. She will send you to kill a Baleful Shadow for her, then gives you the Discarded Palace Key and falls silent again.

Finally, once you have progressed past the Lake of Rot, beaten Astel Naturalborn of the Void, and retrieved the Dark Moon Ring from the Academy's Grand Library using the Palace Key, you will be able to reach the ruins of the Cathedral of Manus Celes, where there is a cave leading to Ranni's Two Fingers, which she killed using the Fingerslayer Blade. Ranni's puppet body will be sitting in front of it. You may choose to become Ranni's consort here by returning the ring to her. Ranni will briefly reappear again after this.

You can get optional exposition dialogue from Ranni about her goals by talking to Miniature Ranni at the Ranni's Chamber grace.

After all this, once you have beaten the final boss of the game, there will be a blue summon sign from Ranni. Summoning her gives you the Age of the Stars ending.

Notes

  • Ranni's dead empyrean body can be found atop the Divine Tower of Liurnia and still possesses one half of the Rune of Death.
  • Ranni's doll body has 4 arms, while her original body has two.
  • Some of Ranni's lines were mistranslated, causing the conclusion to her quest to mean different things between languages.[1]
