This book provides a comprehensive approach to PCOS. I have had PCOS for over 10 years with little improvement, so I was very pleased when I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley. I have had PCOS for over 10 years with little improvement, so I was very pleased when I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley. It is nice to find a book that actually takes this condition seriously Many gynaecologist and family doctors have brushed women off and not listened to their patients concerns. I usually do not look to a naturopathic approach but I am glad I decided to read Dr. McCulloch’s book. She starts the book by defining what PCOS is and also the many subsets of the condition. Each woman experiences PCOS in a different way and McCulloch is aware of this. One woman can experience weight gain and facial hair, while another is skinny with elevated cholesterol. I also like that Dr. McCulloch is Canadian and understands the frustrations that many women face in our health care system.

She provides 8 specific steps for reversing PCOS and goes into great deal to explain not only how to do so but also reasons why each step is important. She backs up all her facts with research which gives some evidence to her naturopathic medicine. Her advice would be helpful for all women and patients in general. Following a low inflammation diet and exciting more are advice that would benefit everyone.

I honestly think this book would be especially useful for someone who is newly diagnosed with PCOS. Doctors can’t or won’t spend the time to review just how much this condition can affect you. It is usually not until woman is expiring complications such as infertility or several menstrual/hormonal disorders that she goes to her doctor for more. This book would be an excellent resource and should not be overlooked

My naturopathic doctor recommend this book to me when she told me that I have PCOS. It is written from the perspective of holistic medicine as the author is also naturopathic doctor and someone who has PCOS herself.

This book is very detailed and offers lots of amazing recommendations for herbal supplements. It would be a FANTASTIC resource for someone who cannot afford regular doctor's visits, or naturopathic services, although I have to stress it should not be used as a substitute to medical supervision.

If you even suspect there is something wrong with your thyroid, hormones, or menstrual cycle, definitely go get checked for this and do some research before you go to your doc. Some of the tests are not routine which is why I had all the symptoms and still went un-diagnosed for years.

Back to the book.

It is incredibly in-depth and very "smart". I am a decently intelligent individual, I have a university degree and a college degree. And I had trouble understanding it at times. If you have an interest in the medical sciences, this would be more helpful. I do not and definitely got lost at times.

However, I still gained a deeper understanding of this disorder and how to treat it. This enabled me to bring ideas and questions to my doctor that I might not otherwise know to ask. I was able to better understand how severe / not severe my disorder was (because there can be a huge scale with PCOS).

And the naturopathic treatments are helping. So I recommend this book if you are the type of person who is interested in medicine or were smart enough to pursue a post-secondary education. If you struggled in school, this book would probably be a waste of time and become a source of frustration, but there are other resources out there.

Additionally, I would recommend purchasing this book rather than borrowing it. I found it very helpful to highlight charts that scale blood test results so you know which category you fall in. This is great for referring back to in the future! Also, I highlighted sections I needed to ask questions about and supplements I wanted to try, to chat with my doctor about.

I can’t believe I have lived 12 years with pcos without knowing what is going on with my body. Although I was searching online like a worm but never found those information in somewhere else except this book. No one have helped me before as this book do. Drs just sent me home with “ it’s ok, a lot of women have it” statement or with pills ( birth control, metformin) that made me worse and make my symptoms much worse.
If you are sick of the pharmaceuticals pills and interested in discovering that amazing natural treatment, so this book is for you. If you are ready to live in non-toxicity environment and start a journey of healing, so his book for you. If you already started some supplements but you don't get any results, so this book for you because you will know exactly what supplements are good for you and what is the appropriate dosage. If you are asking why my symptoms are different than my friend's symptoms who has also PCOS, so this book for you. If you have PCOS, this book is must-read for you.

I can’t thank you enough dr Fiona for this book. This book gave me my life back after a lot of suffering. Not only by the suggested supplements but - first- by making me understand much more about myself, my body, my mind, my future.

Thanks for writing this book that will help a lot of women and prevent a lot of suffering.

Although the book is amazing as I have said above. There are 1 point I wish the auther can improve in the next editions:
the last chapter about the diet, I am following whole food plant based diet after reading books like : eat to live, starch solution, how not to die, forks over knives, cheese trap, and more. So the information about eggs and meat are healthy doesn’t make sense to me especially when you are saying dairy ia bad but egg ( which is chicken’s period is healthy ). I know dr Fiona said there are many diets and every one is different but I hope dr Fiona read more about Whole food plant based diet and include it in the book.

I cannot recommend this book enough! When my doctor first suggested I may have PCOS, he just put me on birth control and told me to lose weight. He didn't do any blood/hormone tests or an ultrasound, and he also prescribed me one of the few birth control pills that actually contains androgens, which women with PCOS have too much of already and is a part of causing PCOS! It wasn't until I started doing my own research months later that I realized how baffling this was. Also, it's more difficult for women with PCOS to lose weight, and often PCOS causes weight gain. Unfortunately, so many women diagnosed with PCOS are treated this way, rather than doctors helping them with the root causes, since there's several things that can cause PCOS.

This book was has been one of the tools that have been so helpful for me in not only understanding my diagnosis, but also helping me treat the root causes of PCOS rather than putting a band-aid on there. This is a great place to start if you've just been diagnosed with PCOS, or if you're looking to know more about it.

This was a very informative book! I appreciate how comprehensive Dr. McCulloch is. She leverages peer-reviewed, empirical research as well as anecdotes from clinical practice. I read it word for word for the parts that were relevant to me (e.g. how DHEA-S and other androgens work) and skipped over some of the detailed descriptions of PCOS symptoms that were less relevant for me (but was excited to have this resource if they become more problematic for me).

A few observations (not critiques, just comments): First, much of the advice revolves around taking different supplements. I wrote down all the suggested supplements and had a list of about 30 or 40 different natural remedies. My reaction was three-fold. First: how great is it that someone has actually chronicled all the possible remedies for every possible PCOS issue/symptom? Wow. I'm thankful! Second: holy moly, this is overwhelming, and experiments should definitely be guided by a medical professional. Third: I'm a little overwhelmed/anxious about using supplements in general as they are not as widely regulated as traditional pharmaceuticals. Just because something is found in nature and considered a supplement, it doesn't mean it is safe to take, and it scares me that many supplements are not regulated at all by a third party. This is not Dr. McCulloch's fault, but I just wanted to share that reaction... I'm not sure how many of the treatments I will be willing to test.

With regard to diet, I became vegetarian 6 years ago (I try to eat mostly whole foods) and it helped tremendously. I recommend that others read "How Not to Die" for more nutrition guidance (not specific to PCOS, but useful nonetheless for achieving greater health). There's quite a lot of evidence that animal products cause diabetes (which relates to insulin resistance) so I'm not sure if it's actually a good idea that we eat any animal products at all. I agree with Dr. McCulloch that we should avoid dairy.

Eating 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily helped my acne and restore my periods. I put that here in case it helps someone else.

Thanks, Dr. McCulloch!

Pros of book:
-Focus on natural supplements, as well as specific dosages that might be helpful. However, she also covers pharmaceutical options for a well-rounded view of treatment options.
-Specific guidance of lifestyle changes and diet changes that may work, without trying to only prescribe weight loss for everything
-Tailored guidance for difference kinds of PCOS. PCOS is not all one-size-fits-all, and I appreciate that the author does not present her recommendations that way. As someone with "lean" PCOS who does not have any sign of insulin resistance, I appreciate that she calls out which pieces of guidance I should follow and which are less relevant.

Cons of Book:
-I think this book could be extremely overwhelming for someone newly diagnosed (or someone who only suspects they have PCOS but have not been diagnosed). The author discusses dozens of hormones at play with PCOS and what seemed like 50 different potential supplements (I didn't count, but it was a lot!) that each address specific types of issues associated with PCOS (e.g. if you have insulin resistance, try taking XYZ; if you have Ovarian Androgen dominance take ABC; if you have low thyroid function, take 123, etc.). I think this could be extremely overwhelming for someone who doesn't truly understand which "type" of PCOS they have and what their lab tests and ultrasounds show. While she does have various quizzes to try to identify which type you have, this is no substitute for medical evaluation and actual blood work. Worst case - I think this could lead to someone overdoing the supplements or focusing too broadly without addressing their specific needs.

I would NOT recommend someone reading this book before going to their Dr. and getting a full hormone panel done for PCOS as well as blood tests to determine insulin resistance. With those results in hand, this book becomes much more valuable and less overwhelming.

So informative. A lot of information that it was a little overwhelming at first. Not jumbled up with an excessive amount of jargon only reserved for those in the medical field.
