Q: How long do mysterious eggs take to hatch?

Youll have to keep the egg on you for 7 days, but at the end of those 7 days, it will hatch into a few things. Most of the time, the egg will be a dud, and you get an Aged Yolk.

How many steps does it need to hatch? I don't feel like using the poke with my eevee team but I still sorta want to complete that event. Will it hath shortly after i get it or what?

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didnt.

Mystery egg? You mean the one you get from Elm's assistant? Mine hatched some time after beating the gym leader and rival in Azalea City.

Mystery egg hatch

The Mystery Egg that Professor Elm gives to the player in “Pokémon HeartGold” hatches after the player walks between 2805 and 3059 steps while holding the egg. It hatches into a level 1 Togepi.

In “Pokémon HeartGold,” the player initially receives the Mystery Egg from Mr. Pokémon on Route 30, and he delivers it to Professor Elm to study it. Later in the game, after the player earns the Zephyr badge, Professor Elm’s aide Zuki in the Violet City Pokémart gives the egg back to the player to hatch it. The Togepi hatched from this egg knows the move Extrasensory, a psychic move that Togepi can only learn otherwise by breeding with a Noctowl or Hoothoot.

How do you hatch the mystery egg cause I gave it to professer elm about 3 years ago and it still hasn't hatched

It takes a while, but like Geon said, you keep it with your active Pokemon and it will hatch.
You have to take a certain amount of steps (quite a few) and it normally hatches with me around Goldenrod City.

It takes 1000 steps to make the egg hatch. All the eggs depend on the no. of steps, so if you have an egg, keep riding up + down cycling road!

How long do the three original starting pokemon (charmander, squirtle, bulbasaur) take to hatch?

They all take around 5,120 steps, 5 times as much as Togepi.
Chansey, Lapras, Snorlax, Dratini, and Larvitar take the most steps, 10,240.

in short, the strongest/heaviest pokemon that we'd use at high levels (as mentioned above) take the longest; the one's we'd use at lower levels (before getting aforementioned ones) like the bugs, etc.

Also, there is a little ranking:

shortest time
-same pokemon species (evolutions DON'T coun't as the same), one was traded to you
-same pokemon species, both from your game
-different pokemon species, traded
-different species, btoh from your game
longest time

anything bred with ditto takes quite awhile to hatch
