THE Queen of Philippine Movies Susan Roces has passed away, her family confirmed. She was 80 years old. Malacañang sent condolences to her family, saying her death is "a big loss" not only to the local entertainment industry but also to all Filipinos.

"With great sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved Jesusa Sonora Poe, whom many of you know as Susan Roces. She passed away peacefully on a Friday evening, May 20, 2022, surrounded by love and warmth, with her daughter Grace, her nephews Joseph and Jeffrey, and many of her family and close friends. She lived life fully and gracefully," a statement from the office of Roces' daughter, Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares, read.

"Remember her in her beauty, warmth and kindness. She is now with the Lord and her beloved Ronnie — FPJ (Fernando Poe Jr.). We will miss her sorely but we celebrate a life well-lived. Susan Roces — daughter, mother, grandmother, a true Filipina and a national treasure."Jesusa Purificacion Levy Sonora-Poe in real life, Roces was born on July 28, 1941. Her first lead role was in the 1956 film, "Boksingera." She made more than 130 films. Among the most iconic are "Gumising Ka Maruja," "Patayin Mo Sa Sindak Si Barbara" and "Mano Po 2: My Home."

Roces is a five-time recipient of Famas awards, which include two best actress victories. She was also nominated several times for the awards organization.

In 2003, she won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Film Academy of the Philippines and in 2019, she received the Outstanding Star of the Century award from the PMPC Star Awards for Movies.

She was married to the "King of Philippine Movies," Fernando Poe Jr. from 1968 until his death in 2004.

Roces was last seen portraying Lola Flora in the long-running TV series, "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano." Her wake started last night at Heritage Park, Taguig City.

The public is welcome to the wake, but her family has requested that everyone must follow safety protocols. Social distancing and wearing of masks will be implemented.

An online link, meanwhile, will be provided for those who want to pay their respects virtually.

Condolences and tributes from personalities in show business and politics swiftly flooded Twitter.

"Susan Roces," "Rest in Peace," and "Lola Flora" — the character Roces last portrayed in the long-running TV series, "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" — topped the trending topic on Twitter.

"My sincerest condolences to Sen. Grace and the family and loved ones of Ma'am Susan Roces.... Rest in peace po Ninang Susan...you will be missed...," Senator-elect Francis "Chiz" Escudero shared via his Twitter account, @SayChiz.

"Rest In Peace Ninang Susan Roces," Senator-elect Jose Victor Ejercito also tweeted.

The Star for All Seasons, Vilma Santos, posted on Instagram, "Rest in peace, Ate Susan. Maraming salamat (Thank you very much)! We will miss you. We love you."

Meanwhile, Lovi Poe — FPJ's daughter with former actress-beauty queen Rowena Moran — also sent her tribute to Roces.

She posted on Instagram, "I write this post with a heavy heart. We've truly lost a gem and one of the beloved pillars in the industry. My love and prayers to Ate Grace (Sen. Grace Poe) and the whole family."

In a statement, Acting Palace spokesman Martin Andanar extended Malacañang's "deep condolences to the family, loved ones, close friends and colleagues on the passing of Susan Roces.

"Ms. Roces was the Queen of Philippine Movies and her death is truly a big loss not only to the local entertainment industry but to all the people whose lives the beloved icon had touched and affected," Andanar said.

Senate President Vicente Sotto 3rd also condoled with the family. The Senate president said his wife, Helen, was close to Susan. "We are very sad not only for our family but also [for] the movie industry," he added.

Sen. Manuel "Lito" Lapid, also a movie actor, described Susan as her idol and as the mother of Filipino movies. In a statement, Lapid said: "Malapit sa puso ko si Inday Susan hindi lamang dahil maybahay siya ng isang malapit na kaibigan na si Fernando Poe Jr at ina ng aking kasamahan sa Senado na si Senador Grace Poe, kung hindi dahil mahalagang haligi siya kasama ni Coco Martin sa programang tumanggap sa akin na makapagtanghal at maging makabuluhan sa telebisyon bilang Pinuno sa 'Ang Probinsyano' (She is close to my heart not only because she was the widow of my close friend, Fernando Poe Jr. and mother of my colleague in the Senate, Sen. Grace Poe, but she is a strong pillar of Coco Martin in the TV series, 'Ang Probinsyano,' where I also had a part)."

Senator-elect Rafael "Raffy" Tulfo said he and his entire family expressed their sincerest condolences on the passing of Sen. Grace Poe's mother, Susan Roces, who is beloved by all. "Few celebrity icons are as loved as Ms. Susan Roces," Tulfo said. "We ask President Duterte to declare a national day of mourning on the day of her burial," he added.
