OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Police were able to put out a dune grass fire before it spread to a nearby restaurant after an illegal firework was lit on the beach on Friday.

On Friday night a firework was set off on the beach next to the access path to Cortland Avenue, said Old Orchard Beach Police in a written statement. The lit firework set fire to the nearby dune grass, and the fire spread rapidly in the direction of Surf 6 restaurant, according to police.

Police officers were on scene less than a minute after the firework was set off and were able to put out the dune grass fire after using several fire extinguishers, according to police. The fire extinguishers are standard equipment carried in the department’s cruisers.

 

&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p style="font-size:14pt;font-family:" times="" new="" roman";"=""&gt;The Old Orchard Beach Police Department reminds community members and visitors that town ordinances prohibit anyone from using or selling consumer fireworks within the town. Use of fireworks in Old Orchard Beach can carry fines up to $500 as well as additional criminal charges.
