The second in my gluten free lollies series is going to focus on Jelly Beans! For those who may have found this article, you may be interested in my gluten free gummies round up as well. Like last time, the important thing to note and the reason why I haven’t been keen to do something like this is that; all ingredients and processes can change at the drop of a hat. Therefore at the time you read this I cannot guarantee that the lollies or chocolates you see will still be safe. You must always read the labels yourself at the time of purchase. This is merely a guide, to give you an idea where to start.

The second thing to note is that Glucose syrup derived from wheat has actually been highly processed. The result of this processing renders the gluten proteins not detectable at our current less than 3 ppm standards. Therefore it is the general consensus that Glucose Syrup from wheat is safe for anyone with Coeliac Disease to consume. However, as a child I continued to react to this safe product and it wasn’t until I was further tested for allergies that I discovered it is possible to have both Coeliac Disease and a wheat allergy. If you are like me and have an additional wheat allergy it could be that you’ll get an allergic reaction to the wheat glucose. For that reason, I have minimised the lollies on this list that contain wheat glucose. I can’t review something that I can’t taste.

Now that we have the formalities out of the way, let’s get on to the lollies! Jelly beans are a wonderful way of filling up a lolly bar and they taste pretty good. So, what brands of jelly beans can you buy if you need gluten free?

Jelly Belly

My favourite brand of gluten free Jelly Beans is Jelly Belly. The American company has around about 100 different flavours including the bean boozled range and the Harry Potter Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans. At stores like Sugar Station you can mix and match your own packets, otherwise, Big W, Kmart and other stores have them in ranging pack sizes. My favourite flavour is by far the watermelon while Brody adores the pear. These ones pictured were only $1 from Kmart!

Sue Shepherd

Among all the gummy type candy in the irresistible range, you can also find jelly beans. Just like the rest of the Sue Shepherd lollies, these are dairy free, soy free, egg free and low FODMAP. These can be found at IGA stores or purchased online from the Sue Shepherd Website. The pack will cost you around $3.50 depending on where you get them from.

Mike & Ike’s

As well as all those brands of gluten free jelly beans, you can also get Mike & Ike’s. These were featured in a gluten free find earlier last year and are my childhood favourite treat. They have the texture of a jelly bean but in a thinner more elongated shape. You can generally find these at places like sugar station or online at Candytime. They have three different varieties that I have seen in Australia, the original packet, a sour packet and the tropical mix.

KMart

Kmart also has gluten free jelly beans among their range. These will cost you $2 and can be found in the lolly aisle. They are decent sized jelly beans but I have found that the pack lacks in variety.

As with all my guides, this is not an exhaustive list of what is available out there. Learning to read labels is important in being able to determine for yourself what is a product is safe. However, I hope this little guide does help you with a starting point. Some of the other brands that you can find around include the gluten free lollies from the reject shop and a few party mixes that can be found there as well.
