Cons

  • Very noisy at highway speeds

Just a while ago, drivers that wanted maximum enjoyment in the corners could only get that from summer tires. Today, though, we have many all-season ultra-high-performance (UHP) tires on the market. The category became very competitive, where every serious manufacturer has its own tire.

BFGoodrich also has its competitor here, the g-Force COMP-2 A/S. Recently, the company introduced a refreshed “Plus” version, which means that the tire tested here costs less than before. But we will only focus on the current-gen model here and see how it compares to its rivals.

To compete favorably, the g-Force COMP-2 needs to perform well across a variety of conditions and tests. The best all-season UHP tires provide an outstanding driving experience but also a comfortable and quiet ride. That’s because most of these tires will find their way on performance and executive sedans, whose owners expect a higher level of sophistication.

Moreover, modern all-season UHP tires last for a very long time, almost four years in normal driving. Thus, this quality is also very important to customers. Ultimately, this is an all-season tire, which means that drivers will expect some snow and ice traction.

So, how does the g-Force COMP-2 fare against the competition? Let’s dig in and find out!

What are the features of the BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S?

Bfgoodrich g-force comp-2 a/s in snow

According to BFGoodrich, the g-Force COMP-2 A/S is a tire that provides the best wet & dry grip compared to its rivals. They don’t state what these rivals are, but it is what it is. Furthermore, the company brags about the good treadlife and control in all seasons.

To achieve the aforementioned qualities, BFGoodrich utilized its UltiGrip Technology, which features a high-silica tread compound that remains flexible in cold weather, but still maintains excellent grip in warmer conditions.

The tread pattern is directional and V-shaped with angled lateral and longitudinal grooves. Such design usually provides better wet traction without hurting dry stability. Meanwhile, the squared-off shoulders and wraparound tread blocks provide consistent block rigidity for increase grip and stability.

The brand also utilized its Performance Racing Core construction with Equal TEnsion Containment System (ETEC System) for more responsive handling. Ultimately, the g-Control sidewall inserts take care of ride quality.

What are the maintenance indicators?

The g-Force COMP-2 features the regular tread wear indicators (TWIs) built into the circumferential grooves. These are narrow rubber bars that sit recessed in the tire. As the tread wears down, the TWI’s become more visible.

As soon as it reaches a 2/32-inch tread depth, the bars will be completely flush with the surface. This is the lowest legal tread depth on all-season UHP tires, so make sure you replace them immediately. However, I suggest replacing the tires even sooner if you want to have reliable wet traction.

The g-Force COMP-2 comes with a 45,000-mile treadwear warranty, which is slightly lower than what premium rivals offer. However, it’s still okay for an all-season UHP tire.

How does it behave on a dry tarmac?

Even after just a few miles, the BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S shows what an ultra-high-performance tire is all about. As an enthusiast driver, I was enjoying every minute behind the wheel, although this tire utilizes an all-season tread compound. This says a lot about the thought that went behind this tire, and I applaud it.

But let’s start from the beginning since there is a lot to cover here. The g-Force COMP-2 feels exceptionally well on-center and provides quick yet fluid responses to the driver’s input. This is something that I think many drivers will value, especially those that want to attack every corner. Put simply; this is a tire you will definitely enjoy driving.

However, many other all-season UHP tires are responsive but don’t match that with a good cornering grip. Thankfully, the g-Force COMP-2 is not one of those tires. The grip levels are astonishingly high for an all-season tread compound. You can even bring a set of these on the track and enjoy your time. Now, sure, summer tires will provide an even higher grip, but as far as all-season compounds go, this is one of the stickiest.

Moreover, you will definitely appreciate the stability this tire offers at higher speeds. You can easily keep direction on the highway and change lanes quickly without worrying about losing control. The tire is so good that you can easily place your car anywhere you want in the corner, even when driving faster than usual. Ultimately, the stopping distances are among the shortest in the category.

Overall, the g-Force COMP-2 is among the best UHP all-season tires for enthusiast drivers. In terms of pure joy, it’s as good as some premium tires, which is very high praise indeed. Put the price into consideration, and you have arguably the best fun/value ratio in the category.

How is it over wet and slippery roads?

Bfgoodrich g-force comp-2 a/s in snow

The g-Force COMP-2 is a very reliable tire for driving on wet surfaces. It’s not class-leading, but the differences between it and the best all-season UHP tires aren’t very big. I think you’ll only feel them if you put the tires head-to-head. In isolation, the tire is excellent.

The responsiveness and positive steering feel are as good as ever. You will still enjoy your car, even when it rains significantly outside. The traction is very good, too – the driven wheels will not spin too much. That’s true both on damp roads and on very wet tarmac.

The hydroplaning resistance is excellent, too, even in very heavy rain. Meanwhile, the cornering grip is excellent, both on damp and wet surfaces. Even if you lose traction, the g-Force COMP-2 exhibits understeer, which is very easier to correct than tires that display oversteer. Ultimately, stopping distances are very short.

Overall, BFGoodrich’s UHP tire performs outstandingly well in wet conditions. It handles corners safely, always stops in time, and has excellent hydroplaning resistance. More importantly, it instills confidence in the driver to push harder, which is an important thing in a UHP tire.

With that being said, how is it on snowy roads?

All-season UHP tires initially performed ferociously bad on snow and ice. Things improved over time, and today some models are mildly-usable in harsh wintry conditions. And, when I say mildly, I mean, you would still need a proper winter tire.

However, the g-Force COMP-2 performs very well in its category. In terms of snow traction, it’s better than most of its competitors, which you can easily feel in the winter. Specifically, BFGoodrich’s UHP model will accelerate faster, provide shorter braking distances, and steer with more confidence.

Ice traction is also better than its main rivals. However, that’s not to say it’s good. I still find it unreliable and unsafe. Therefore, I suggest taking it slowly in the winter – no performance driving in these conditions!

Is it suitable for off-road driving?

Absolutely not! But I think you already knew this. The BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S isn’t designed for off-road driving and won’t provide you with good traction. Moreover, the tread compound on this product can be easily damaged or punctured by sharp objects.

Is it comfortable and refined?

There is no getting around the fact that more responsive tires usually suffer in the ride quality department. Sadly, the g-Force COMP-2 is no exception here. Although not uncomfortable, the ride is still stiff. Thus, if you want the most comfortable driving experience in your executive sedan, I recommend going for some of the rivals.

Moreover, there is a noticeable tread growl. At low speeds, it isn’t overly obtrusive, but you can still clearly hear it. If your vehicle doesn’t have very good sound insulation, highway driving can be an issue, especially for longer periods. Things become even worse on a rough tarmac, where the g-Force COMP-2 produces too much noise. I’d even go as far as to say that it’s loud.

Overall, this is not the tire for drivers that value comfort.

Although old by now, the g-Force COMP-2 is still one of the best all-season UHP tires available. That’s especially true if you’re an enthusiast driver that wants a joyful experience. On the road, this tire feels outstandingly responsive and communicates with the driver well, exhibits excellent grip and traction, and exceptional high-speed stability.

Nonetheless, if you care about comfort, this is not the product for you. There is no getting around the noise it produces, especially at higher speeds, and it’s not very comfortable over bumps as well. Also, the 45,000-mile treadwear warranty is slightly shorter than the best tires in this category.

If you decided to buy this tire despite its shortcomings, I suggest looking at the successor, the “Plus” model. The refreshed tire provides slightly better results in almost every category, although it also costs more. Still, if you find a good deal on the g-Force COMP-2 A/S and want a great experience, I suggest going for it.
