What size sausage is Blue and Gold?

To assist his students in improving the quality of their FFA projects, agricultural education instructor Don Ramsey created a sausage fundraiser for the FFA chapter in Jones, Oklahoma, in the late 1960s.

According to Brett Ramsey, Don’s son, “The kids reared their own animals as show items, and they were losing money selling them to stockyards when they were done showing them.” “Dad began taking kids to a nearby processor so they could make sausage to sell door to door as a fundraiser. It worked out well for his group, and before he knew it, other agriculture teachers in nearby towns wanted to follow suit.”

Don quit his 20-year teaching job in 1972 when the demand for his sausage became intolerable and established the Blue and Gold Sausage Co.

According to Brett, his father, who is now 85, “spent up his retirement from teaching 20 years in one day by buying equipment, although at that time he had no experience in food processing.” What began as a fundraiser for one FFA chapter has expanded to benefit FFA chapters, bands, baseball teams, booster clubs, PTAs, and organizations across Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas.

The Blue and Gold Sausage Co., which has been in operation for more than 40 years, still markets and sells all of its goods via more than 1,100 charitable organizations and youth organizations. These goods come in 2.5-pound sausage rolls, 3.5-pound bacon packages, and 5-pound bags of breaded chicken tenders.

FFA chapters still make up a third of our total client base and account for 70% of our annual revenue, according to Brett. We sell through all 350 of Oklahoma’s chapters, which number.

Fundraising organizations sold 3.25 million pounds of Blue and Gold Sausage, 1.25 million pounds of bacon, and 900,000 pounds of breaded chicken tenders during the 2012–2013 academic year. For their initiatives, they collectively received more than $2.5 million.

Don and Willadean Ramsey, along with their sons Brett and Greg, still own Blue & Gold Sausage.

Brett continues, “Greg handles legal matters and USDA inspections, while I handle inventory and public relations.” “Mom, who is 73 this year and does the bookkeeping, She started off fast and hasn’t let up. Dad is still involved and still gives us all instructions.”

The business has outgrown its 9,000 square foot storage and production facility as a result of sustained development. In 2013, the Ramseys will triple the building’s size to 27,000 square feet. The business employs eight full-time staff members and up to forty during September, October, and November, when production is at its maximum.

Being a small firm allows us to wear many different hats, which is fantastic, as Brett points out. “I might be cleaning the floors tomorrow and sitting on a forklift today for a discussion about investments. It keeps things interesting.”

Brett continues, “It’s great when your customers support what you believe in. “Dad has a side company but is still at heart an agriculture teacher. The FFA program in Oklahoma is incredibly effective, and we’ve been lucky to be able to help.”
