Can you play with bots in Apex?

Ever since it was released, Apex Legends Mobile has been popular among fans of the original console and PC versions of the game, but also with newcomers to the franchise. The great thing about the game being on mobile devices is that it opens the door for a much broader player base given how many people have devices that can run the game.

Many seasoned veterans of Apex Legends have dipped into the mobile version and were surprised to find how faithful of an adaptation the mobile version is. When playing a few matches, however, some fans have been wondering if the game is full of bots instead of other players.

Apex Legends Mobile Bots Explained

Can you play with bots in Apex?

The short answer is: yes, early matches in a player’s career in Apex Legends Mobile are filled with bots. While this might be slightly irritating for series veterans looking to get right into the action of playing against other similarly skilled players, the bots do serve a purpose. Essentially, they offer players the chance to get acclimated to the touch control scheme that Apex Legends Mobile runs on. This is a pretty common technique in multiplayer games as of late, so, to an extent, it makes sense that Apex Mobile would include it for new players.

Of course, players that are using controllers will have no trouble completely wiping the floor with the rather brain-dead bots in their starting rounds. Luckily, those already acclimated with Apex‘s mechanics are able to score some free in-game levels by going on a rampage against the bots.

As you play more, you will run into fewer bots with each match, but you still expect to see them from time to time depending on your internet connection and the game’s player count. If you’re frustrated by the bots, consider using the time against them to try out new strategies, Legends, or weapons while you’ve got some “moving targets.”

Battle Royals consist of roughly 100 players, all competing to be the last squad standing. In such a big player pool, not every player is built the same. But some seem to be a little too terrible, lacking properly reaction and decision making. In a lot of mobile battle royals, the game utilizes bots to fill in the lack of players, helping facilitate the matchmaking. This then begs the question, does Apex Legends Mobile have bots?

Analysis

To be frank, Apex Legends Mobile has bots. The first match matches the player up against a purely bot lobby, which allows the player to gain further interest in the game. After all, if a player pops off on their first game, they’re statistically more likely to stick with the game. Even Wild Rift forces the players into a bot game the first time around. But are there bots outside of the first match in Apex Legends Mobile?

This is where things get tricky. A lot of users on reddit claim that there are bots in ranked matches alongside normal battle royal matches. The statement definitely rings true for the lower ranks, in particular for Bronze. But what about the rest of the ranks? Well, the higher the climb, the less likely bots are to appear. For normal games though, there’s been evidence of bots showing up every so often. The issue is, it’s a little ambigious as to who exactly are bots and which squads are real players. The more a person plays and stays attentive to the issue, the more likely they are to spot the bots in their games. But nothing is guaranteed. Maybe the enemies are simply as bad as bots.

In Conclusion

Having bots in a Battle Royal is a bit troublesome. There’s a lot of reasons behind why companies decide to implement bots. For example, it facilitates matchmaking and increases the chances real players succeed in their games. But this then brings the controversry of whether that win was truly deserved or not. When playing a PvP based game, many players want to feel that they accomplished victory over other people. Not some poorly designed AI. And though Apex Legends Mobile does have bots, it’s difficult to tell which players are real and which are controlled by AI.

It's logical to assume that every battle royale game features AI bots, mainly due to the large number of players per game. Every time a match begins, a few percent of these players won't even start playing because they might get disconnected, quit the game, their internet can stop working, and so on. And that's when the AI bots come to take their place and fill all the open spots to make each match pleasant and make those enormous battle royale maps feel less empty. But is this the case for Apex Legends, and are there bots in this game? Keep scrolling, and you'll find that out shortly, along with additional bot-related details.

Are There AI Bots In Apex Legends?

No, there are no AI bots in Apex Legends when playing online matchmaking. The only bot featured in online matches is Pathfinder, one of the robot characters.

Fortunately for both the players and Respawn Entertainment, Apex Legends has a very stable player count, with a few hundred thousand daily players on all devices. Because of this, adding AI bots is unnecessary since it's pretty easy to find a squad, and the game can easily match 60 real players without resorting to their AI counterparts. Still, many players swear that Apex Legends is actually full of bots, especially the Apex Legends Mobile or on Asian Servers. But these were no bots, just some awful teammates who are even less skilled than bots.

Are There Target Practice Bots In Apex Legends?

Yes, there are target practice bots called DUMMIEs exclusively found in the Firing Range mode. By default, these dummies won't move or attack you, but there's a trick that can be used to activate them and make them attack you. Firstly, make sure to drop all of your weapons and set a crouch on "toggle" instead of "hold." Then, proceed to the cave on the far right side (looking at the cave entrances) and select the Pathfinder or Valkyrie. Next, get to the metal ceiling platform, crouch, and look down. From that point, switch to any other legends, and you'll hear a sound indicating that DUMMIEs are active. From now on, they will attack you and move.

These spammers are generally promoting something by sharing a link or duplicative messages, and they are not there to play a game but to spam instead. So if you detect a spammer in your squad before the game begins, you can definitely count on one less player, which will make things much more challenging for you.
