Can you plop hair in a bonnet

Today’s video is a simple one, but something I get asked very often is how to put on a bonnet and the best ways to preserve your curls at night. With naturally curly hair, it’s best to protect your curls at night in order to prolong your wash days.

There are several ways to protect your curls at night, including:

  • Satin or silk bonnet
  • Pineapple with a scrunchie + satin/silk pillowcase
  • Satin/sill hair scarf or wrap

Satin or Silk?

Both are great for protecting your curls, and it’s really personal preference and which material you like more. In my opinion, satin feels more slippery and glossy, and is more cooling. Silk is very soft and has more of a dull appearance. Silk is natural fiber and satin is a synthetic weave.

How to Find the Right Bonnet

Finding the right fitting the bonnet is like finding the right bra. It can be tough when ordering online or buying the in store because it’s hard to tell the size.

It’s important to get the right so your curls so it’s effective. If your bonnet is too tight, your curls could be smushed against your scalp and become mis-shaped.

If it’s too big, your curls will fall and not be held up on top of your head. It can also slide off when sleeping if it’s not snug enough against your hairline.

If you have very long, thick hair, look for an extra-large size. If you have short or low density hair, you should be fine with a regular size.

I also look for bonnets that do not have a thick headband design around the rim, because I find those to be uncomfortable to sleep in.

How to Properly Put on a Bonnet

  1. Flip head upside down
  2. Hold the bonnet open with both hands
  3. Hook the bonnet at the nape of your neck
  4. Stretch the bonnet downwards, over your the length of your curls
  5. Press the ends of your curls up towards your scalp to gather it into the bonnet
  6. Situate the bonnet and ensure all curls are tucked in

Pineapple or no Pineapple?

If you do not prefer to wear a bonnet, the next best option is to wear your curls up on top of your head using a satin/silk scrunchie. This is called a “pineapple” in the curl girl community because of the appearance. This protects the inside layer of your curls since just the underside is touching the surface of your pillow. It’s highly recommended to still sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase with this method.

Which way do you prefer to sleep with your curls? Have you found the right bonnet?

Can you plop hair in a bonnet

Hey guys, I'm new around here. I'm a recovering 2B/2C and ever since I've gone to college, I've dedicated myself to taking care of my curls, properly! I've been a longtime lurker but just recently made an account. I'll share some hair pics eventually but I wanted another curly's perspective on an issue I'm dealing with. I'm not trying to stir up trouble, promise.

I got a new roommate earlier in the semester, we largely ignore each other due to schedules and different interests. She's also made some passive aggressive comments about my hair and my products such as, "Isn't that for people of color?" or "Those aren't curls, real curls belong to people of color".

Today, I got requested to have a sit down meeting with my RA and her due to "disagreements". She then proceeded to list out her issues with me including "cultural appropriation due to wrapping my hair, using hair products intended for people of color, insensitivity, and falsely identifying myself with something I don't have a place in." and that I've led her to feel uncomfortable in the room.

I'm kind of in shock. I've been trying so hard to take care of my hair by using the right products, plopping, and sleeping with my hair wrapped in a scarf and she is accusing me of cultural appropriation. I did my best to defend myself but we're meeting tomorrow to have a "fix-it" meeting.

I was wondering the curly community's take on this and if I should stand my ground or just stop. I'm not gonna lie, I'm on a bit of a curve here as these weren't topics discussed where I grew up. I'm now very unsure if I want to continue this curl journey. Is plopping/wrapping your hair up something that is ok within the overall community or is it something I have been appropriating? Thanks guys.

Is sleeping with a bonnet good for curly hair?

Satin bonnets are a must-have staple for anyone looking to protect their curls or natural hairstyle. Satin bonnets are like silk pillowcases, they prevent hair damage and reduce friction as you toss and turn while sleeping.

Can you sleep with wet hair in a satin bonnet?

Another version of this “damp-do” is wrapping your hair with a silk or satin scarf at night instead of twisting and adding elastics. Be sure to tie or secure the scarf loosely so your hair and scalp can breathe. Again, damp hair is better than dripping wet hair when heading off for a good night's rest.

Will a bonnet keep my curls?

Wear A Silk Or Satin Lined Bonnet Bonnets may not look very sexy at bedtime, but they can be very effective in protecting your curls while you sleep. If the bonnet tries to slip off your head overnight, try securing it with some hairpins.
