Can you use a credit card at the dollar store?

PURCHASE, N.Y. & GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nov. 18, 2011– Starting today, shoppers have the option to use their MasterCard credit cards at all of the nearly 10,000 Dollar General locations across the country, expanding on previous acceptance of MasterCard debit and prepaid cards.

“Dollar General is focused on making shopping for everyday needs hassle-free,” said Rick Dreiling, Chairman and CEO, Dollar General. “Yet another example of how we are doing that is expanding payment options to include MasterCard credit. This move gives our customers more flexibility in how they choose to pay and helps them save time with a simple, easy check-out, no matter which form of payment they choose.”

With today’s announcement, Dollar General reinforces its leadership among small-box discounters by adding MasterCard branded credit cards.

As consumers have become more comfortable using payment cards, there has been a migration of everyday spending from cash and check to electronic payment. Dollar General was the first among small-box value discounters to roll out readers for electronic benefits cards and bank debit and credit cards, making transactions even more convenient for customers.

“We are committed to collaborating with our merchant partners to provide an easier, more secure and more efficient payment choice,” said Craig Vosburg, Group Executive, U.S. Market Development, MasterCard Worldwide. “We believe that the expanded convenience and enhanced customer experience that MasterCard delivers will help support Dollar General’s efforts to drive greater sales and loyalty.”

Over the next year, Dollar General will also begin distributing MasterCard general purpose reloadable prepaid cards in all of its locations.
