Can you use Loreal HiColor on dark hair?

  • L’Oréal HiColor is specially designed for hair that was previously dyed dark. It’s applied with a 30 or 40-volume peroxide. Therefore, it removes the pigments of the previous hair dye.
  • You can use it on hair treated with permanent, semi-permanent, or ammonia-free hair dye.
  • However, you cannot use it if you previously colored it with henna. In this case, you’ll have to wait at least one year to apply HiColor.
  • Today, I’ll tell you about the best shades of HiColor according to the color you used previously.

All permanent hair dyes can be applied over the other hair dyes because the developer removes the first hair dye.

However, you should be aware of some additional issues with HiColor.

Otherwise, you could ruin your hair.

For example, what hair dye did you use to color your hair? Did you use henna?

I have some bad news.

In that case, you cannot use HiColor.

Although henna is a chemical-free, plant-based, natural hair dye, it contains a metallic ingredient.

If you apply HiColor over it, your hair will fall out in clumps.

So, if you’ve used henna, you should wait 9-12 months before considering a permanent hair color like HiColor.

Having said that, what color did you use before?

HiColor works perfectly well on hair colored with permanent, semi-permanent, or ammonia-free hair dye.

Will HiColor work on your black-colored hair?

Yes. HiColor is applied with a 30 or 40-volume developer. It’s powerful enough to remove the previous hair dye.

And that’s great news for dark color-treated hair because you won’t need to bleach your hair.

Now that you know that L’Oréal HiColor can be applied to your color-treated hair, you should choose the best shade.

And that’s what I’ll talk about next.

How to apply L’Oréal HiColor on color-treated hair

Can you use Loreal HiColor on dark hair?

HiColor is not sold as a kit. So, you’ll need to get a developer according to your new shade.

  • Darker shades are applied with a 30-volume developer.
  • Lighter shades are applied with a 40-volume developer.

Once you gather all the elements, you can start the application. Here’s a list of materials you’ll need.

  • HiColor hair dye
  • A 30 or 40-volume developer
  • Hair dye brush
  • Plastic container
  • Hair clips
  • Gloves

Step by step

Step 1: Hair preparation

I recommend that you don’t wash your hair for 48 hours before applying the hair dye. That way, the natural oil produced by the scalp will protect your hair.

Comb your hair and divide it into four sections, two in the front and two in the back, holding each section with hair clips.

Step 2: Mix preparation

In a plastic container, mix the hair dye and the 30 or 40-volume developer.

Mix to blend.

Step 3: Mix application

With gloves on, release one of the four sections of hair you separated and start applying from roots to ends.

You can do this with the hair color brush to cover all the hair to get an even color.

Then, cover your hair with a shower cap or nylon bag to keep the mixture warm.

Leave it on for 40 to 50 minutes and check your color every 5 minutes.

Step 4: Rinse and dry

Finally, rinse your hair with plenty of warm water. You can use shampoo and conditioner and leave them in for 3 to 5 minutes to help your hair recover moisture.

You can dry your hair with a blow dryer or simply apply a few drops of anti-frizz or coconut oil. Let it air dry.
