MikeyM1979 11 years ago#1

I'm using MC 1.5.01.

I placed a glow stone near an ice wall I made, within my house (made of ice and snow), and the damn thing melted what must have been half the wall and my home was flooded lol. Does a glow stone have heat properties to it or something? I know torches melt ice blocks and such, but glow stone? o_O

i think ice melting may be tied to light levels

I think ice melts because of...light.

Yeah. If the light level from blocks like torches, glowstone or pumpkins is too high, the ice melts.

No I have no idea why it's coded like that.

Light = Heat.

Put your hand next to a lightbulb or something that generates light irl and you'll see that. (I don't advise naked flames).

Minecraft isn't realistic, but it is in this sense.

. . . no. light is not heat. Things that generate light often generate heat, however they are two different types of energy. Glowstone is either a naturally florescent mineral (not producing heat) or is somehow able to maintain a constant chemical reaction (thus producing heat, but being unrealistic)

Either way it is not realistic in this sense

Heat in that case is wasted energy. Glowstone is magic. You'd expect magic to be more energy efficient wouldn't you? (I'm assuming on the magic, I mean, it's found in hell. Pretty magical.)

And then there's things like bioluminescence. If there was a mod that made glowing moss block. (for example) it wouldn't make sense for that to melt ice at all, but according to in-game physics it would.

Light doesn't directly equal heat guys....

In Minecraft, it does.

That's exactly what is being said. Only one guy said light = heat.

But in minecraft physics whether ice melts or not is based purely on whether there is light of a certain brightness next to it. (although not sunlight). Which means you could leave Ice in the desert for hours and nothing. Put it in a snow biome next to glowstone and it melts.

P.s. Sorry if this is in the wrong section didn't really know where to put it.

I wonder what i should put in my sig?

Portal blocks provide good light and the last I checked which was a while ago, they didn't melt snow in my map. If you can get a mod like invedit or single player commands you can spawn them.

Nixfriarr and enchilado are both correct. Ice melts due to the light level it's exposed to.

I would either used recessed torches or redstone torches to provide light.

I don't know how to deal with this

If you had SPC, you can perform the lighting bug with glowstone. I don't think it melts ice as the actual block doesn't exist, but the light source does.
To perform this, (may take a couple tries) simply place one glowstone block, then use your wand to select the block, and type 'set air'. That action should remove the glowstone block, but keep the light source without melting the ice you mentioned. It might take several tries, but its worth it

Who the hell said redstone torches don't melt ice?

I have a room filled with ice and lit by torches, not one of them has melted.

Message me yours if you want to trade in Animal Crossing: New Leaf or just need some friends to play with. I can also do Pokemon trades in Pokemon X(or Y), but I don't have any good stuff, and the only good stuff I have is not for trade so...send me requests anyway.

Is the room big? I am building Elsa's ice castle from Frozen out of ice. I used diamond blocks to create a tall pillar and placed a glowstone block on it. The ice doesn't melt, but the room is lit fairly well. OR just use pakced ice. It doesn't melt whatsoever

  • #18 Feb 16, 2014

Light melts when it comes in contact with level 12 or above light. So you could place torches recessed about 3 blocks, ditto with glowstone, or lamps. Then the light level of the room will be 8. (11(maximum light level for ice) - 3 (the light level taken by ice) = 8)

Wheeee. Look at this, i figured out how to type stuff. Hey-- While you're looking at this, mind checking out my youtube channel? It will have more videos once i feel like recording and editing

I notice the date is about 2 years ago. By now if you still play the game, you probably know that Packed Ice is in the game, and it doesn't melt by any means, though it isn't see-through, and if you have to use regular ice, Redstone Torches are you best bet for lighting. If you need more light, I'd make the ceiling high enough to where you can place glowstone or torches on it and the light level on the floor is less that 11. It's birghter than a redstone torch, and it should be far enough away to where it won't melt regular ice

Does Glowstone stop ice in Minecraft?

A good idea is to place some torches, glowstone, Jackolanterns, or the 1.8 block, sea lanterns, directly next to the ice. Any form of light will work, except the sunlight when it is day time.

What things melt ice in Minecraft?

Creating water Ice also melts into water if the light level immediately next to it on any side is higher than 11, from light sources other than sunlight, but ice does not melt from sunlight. In Education and Bedrock editions, ice also melts when near a heat block, though heat blocks do not produce light.

What doesn't melt ice in Minecraft?

Unlike normal ice, packed ice does not melt if placed near light sources. Packed ice is not a storage block, as it cannot be crafted back into ice.

Is there a light source that doesn't melt ice in Minecraft?

There is no such thing as "stopping the heat". Snow melts at block light level 12 and that's all.
