Euphoria season 2 Kat and Ethan

Barbie Ferreira recently unveiled she wasn’t surprised that Kat (Ferreira) and Ethan (Austin Abrams) broke up in season two of Euphoria.

The actor expanded on her insight, claiming that Kat’s main storyline for the season centered on her declining interest in Ethan and their relationship. “I definitely expected it,” she said. “With Kat, season one, you get to see that she is a restless teenager — she doesn’t know who she is,” she continued.

The pair’s relationship came to an end in Season 2 due to Kat’s journey of figuring herself out. They first met in biology class during the previous season, where their romance blossomed. However, Kat was also embarking on a journey of self-exploration per a slew of online identities. These include a Tumblr-famous fan-fiction writer and an underage cam-girl. Ferreira shared: “She [really] went off the deep end when she started falling more into her internet alter ego. So I definitely knew that the Ethan-Kat relationship was gonna go downhill.” The development subsequently manifested in Kat being unsatisfied with the romance, which turned out to be anti-climatic and too wholesome for her.

Ferreira also mentioned that she wanted to see more of Kat’s “internal fantasy life” unfold in season three of the show. “I hope to see her relationship with herself, the internet, [and] with her friends.” Expressing her excitement, the star stated: “I hope to see everything beautifully devolve as it always does on Euphoria. I’m excited to read it. I don’t think it’s written yet, so I’ll be waiting.”

Details regarding the third season have yet to be released, but Ferreira’s schedule is currently packed as she begins her filming journey in Jordan Peele‘s film Nope. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming season.

Well, that's what we figure after watching episode seven of the cult HBO show's second season, which saw him frankly steal the stage in Lexi Howard's play, Our Life, a confronting stage adaptation of the lives of the teens from East Highland.

Played by the talented Austin Abrams, Ethan's character has been a regular in the show since its inception, though he's largely had a sidelined role—first as the new kid in Kat's science class, then as her boyfriend, then as her unfairly dumped boyfriend (#JusticeForEthan et al.).

But now, he's centre stage, literally—and we're living for it.

After the episode went to air, Twitter was alight with a newly created Ethan / Austin Abrams fan club shouting his praises.

"Can we please talk about Ethan's range though? Give him an Oscar already," one wrote, referencing the fact he played several different characters in the High School production.

"WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT Lexi and Ethan hyping up in the green room. Underdog, slept on besties, now fucking everyone up !! I wanna see more of them in S3," another rightly commented.

One added: "Ethan is the MVP of this #Euphoria episode. Austin Abrams killed it."

Of course, a lot of the commentary was around Ethan's final performance to Bonnie Tyler's iconic song, I'm Holding Out For A Hero.

In the scene, he depicts antagonistic character Nate while performing a homoerotic dance—it's so confronting that it actually makes Nate walk out of the theatre and dump Cassie, who is the sister of Lexi.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about the adrenaline-fuelled performance, Abrams explained: "[Ethan's] putting himself out there, like with the whole dance number and everything like that."

There's a lot to be said from that given he was intensely gaslighted by Kat in episode six during their breakup scene.

But he added that as an actor, he had some hesitations about the dance number, admitting that he was originally terrified, particularly because an earlier script had him wearing nothing but a pair of undies during the routine.

"That's not something previously that I had done in a long time, with dancing and stuff," he explained, adding that the entire sequence took three days to film with choreographer Ryan Heffington carrying them through.

"I love the dancers, I love Ryan and it was really fun," Abrams added, "moving your body and moving your hips, there was something so freeing about it."

Of course, the dance will undoubtedly come with repercussions—Abrams said himself that he's a bit worried about what Nate will do to Ethan who, "obviously is a violent guy".

There's also been backlash at the way the show fetishised sexuality at Nate's expense—of course the guy had done a bunch of awful stuff and fully deserved to be called out for it in some way, but as E! News pointed out, the scene is almost like an outing of his sexuality, which isn't fair on anyone if it's not on their own terms.

That said, Lexi's play wasn't exactly about Nate, per se, it was about Lexi's perception of him, and of all the people around her. Of course, whether the people in the crowd understood that or not is the issue here, because it's a pretty public forum to air one's thoughts.
