Fallout 4 stuck at 55 fps

If you have a nvidia card, you can turn on vsync in the 3d options for Fallout 4. I've also heard playing in borderless window mode caps it at 60.

Just be warned that if your machine can't manage 60fps at all times, you'll get stuttering when it drops under that as it tries to snap the render speed to that value.

These issues can be caused by your video card outputting an excess of 60 frames per second, having mods, or your computer's video card drivers being out of date which can result in the game moving too fast or too slow.

Setting your Refresh Rate

These types of issues can also occur if the game/launcher incorrectly detects monitors that are set to refresh rates above 120Hz as being set to 120Hz.

In general, you are advised to keep the game's default settings and continue to play the game with a 60fps cap. The fps cap that the game uses is determined by your monitor refresh rate (typically 60Hz or 120Hz), and dividing it by the "iPresentInterval" value.

Please note that if your monitor is set to 60Hz, the iPresentInterval value in your .INI file should be "1", and if your monitor is set to 120Hz, the iPresentInterval value should be "2". Setting it to "0" uncaps the framerate and can cause the issues mentioned above. If your monitor is set to a value larger than 120Hz (such as 144Hz), we advise you to set your desktop refresh rate to 120Hz instead, when playing the game.

Here are the steps for changing your refresh rate.

  1. Right click on your Desktop.
  2. Click on Display Settings.
  3. Scroll Down and click on Advanced display settings.
  4. Under the Refresh Rate section select 60 Hz from the drop down list.
  5. Click Apply. You will be prompted to "Keep Changes" or "Revert." Select "Keep Changes."
    • Alternatively, you can select Display Adapter Properties for the monitor you are using and change your Screen refresh rate to 60 Hertz under Monitor Settings. Click Apply when complete.

Remove Mods:

Custom mods can in some cases cause in-game performance issues. We recommend disabling or removing any installed mods and trying again.

If you are not able to launch the game, take your system offline and remove the mod from your load order

To delete a mod, open Fallout 4 and select Mods from the main menu. From there, find the mod you wish to delete in your Library, select it, and use the Delete option.

Update Graphics Card Drivers

If your machine meets the game's requirements, we recommend you also ensure that you have the latest drivers for your graphics card installed. You can find drivers for supported video cards here:

NVIDIA
AMD

Note: We recommend you manually download the latest drivers from the above sites and ensure your previous drivers are fully deleted before updating.

Fallout 4 is locked to 60 frames-per-second on the PC, 30 on consoles. Thankfully, for gamers with powerful rigs who want to experience the most out of the game, it’s possible to unlock the game to run at more than 60FPS without experiencing screen tear. This only works if you’re on an Nvidia card.

1) To do so, you’ll first need to download the latest (358.91) Game Ready drivers for your Nvidia card.

2) Ensure that the Fallout4Prefs.ini file in your Documents/my games/Fallout4 folder is NOT set to read-only.

3) Start the Fallout 4 launcher and enter the Options. Set Motion Blur to “off”, God Rays to “low”, and max out everything else—provided you had the game already running on Ultra. Close the launcher.

4) Go back to the Fallout4Prefs.ini file and change the part where it says iPresentlnterval=1 to iPresentlnterval=0. Save the file, close it, and make it read-only by right-clicking the file and examining the properties.

5) Next, open the Nvidia Control Panel. Go to Manage 3D Settings. Go to the Program Settings tab, and find Fallout 4.exe. Set the vertical sync to use the application setting. Do the same for Fallout4launcher.exe.

From this point on, Fallout 4 will run at over 60 frames-per-second.

Unfortunately, because of the Gamebryo engine the game is running on, players who do this may experience some strangeness while playing the game. For starters, the game will speed up in some ways that make lockpicking impossible. Players will also run faster, and physics will behave oddly. The framerate will also drop to 60 or below when you enter third-person view, which feels jarring.

If you’re experiencing any stuttering, check out our guide on how to fix that. For further reading, be sure to check out our guide on maximizing performance in Fallout 4. Disabling mouse acceleration will also help your experience.

Why is Fallout 4 capped at 55 FPS?

Possibly because of the refresh rate of your display or what's set in your GPU software. The refresh rate obviously paired with V-Sync is gonna limit your framerate.

Why is my FPS so low in Fallout 4?

In addition, the Fallout 4 random FPS drops problem also occurs due to some known causes. Many gamers reported that Fallout 4 frame drops when the VSync is turned on. Furthermore, other settings like Vibration, Controller, high God rays, and Draw Distance are also responsible for the problem.
