A viral TikTok video showing a girl being beheaded has been removed from the short-form video platform.

The video of the gory act was created on another platform, although its origin is unclear, and was spliced into a different TikTok so it could be seen and shared by unsuspected users. It appeared to originate from user “Mayenggo3”, whose account appears to be locked. The Independent was unable to contact the user.

The clip starts with a young girl dancing in front of a camera, before immediately cutting to a different video where the horrific act occurs.

“We appreciate the concerted effort by our community to warn about an unconscionably graphic clip from another site that was spliced into a video and brought onto TikTok”, a spokesperson for the company told The Independent.

“The original video was quickly removed, and our systems are proactively detecting and blocking attempted re-uploads of the clip to catch malicious behaviour before the content can receive views. We apologise to those in our community, including our moderators, who may have come upon this content.”

The video has been added to TikTok’s machine learning algorithm which will now automatically detect for it before it receives any views, however it is still not known whether the graphic act is legitimate.

TikTok’s community guidelines state that it does not “not allow content that is gratuitously shocking, graphic, sadistic, or gruesome or that promotes, normalizes, or glorifies extreme violence or suffering on our platform.”

It is also unclear whether TikTok’s automated moderation policy would take down content that has been sophisticatedly faked. In 2019, Facebook said that its own automatic detection failed to identify the video of the New Zealand mosque shooting because its systems could not distinguish it between first-person perspective video game footage.

A spokesperson for TikTok told The Independent that the company would investigate the possibility.

This is not the first time TikTok has been used to spread violent and shocking content. A video of a man taking his own life spreading across the platform in 2020, despite attempts to take it down.

Many social media companies, including TikTok, are attempting to be both more accurate and faster with regards to content moderation, but there are considerable challenges. As human intervention is too slow to adequately deal with the spread of content, companies often turn to artificial intelligence.

During the coronavirus pandemic, YouTube relied more on its algorithm to remove content, but even those systems have their failings too.

In a 2019 report, Ofcom noted that users will try and subvert machine-based moderation, that these systems cannot understand context as well as humans, and they can undermine freedom of expression.

Girl gets her head chopped off

TikTok A gory TikTok video titled 'girl gets head chopped off' has gone viral.

A gory TikTok video titled “girl gets head chopped off” is going viral, prompting reactions from people across social media platforms. Some people are calling it a “girl in a bathroom video.”

There are some indications it’s a man, though.

TikTok user Mayenggo3 originally shared the video, according to social media users who saw it, but not much is known about the people in the video or the original user who shared it.

Heavy did gain some clues by having the video translated.

Some people on social media who’ve seen the video claim it shows a cartel executing a girl in a bathroom or shower, but the murderers don’t reference cartels in the video. The page where the video was originally shared has been set to private; it only has a few followers and a black ribbon on the profile.

Twitter users have shared warnings about the video, which showed a girl dancing before two men cut a person’s head off.

The video starts out as a dancing video then abruptly switches to a lengthy gory scene in a bathroom. More than one man is involved in beheading the person in the video, and they are speaking Spanish. It’s not clear whether the girl who was shown dancing is the same as the girl who is beheaded and is even female at all; their clothing is different. The person whose head is being chopped off is wearing patterned shorts and a blue shirt, and the dancing girl is wearing a cropped black tank top and white shorts. A site called PsychoDuck.net preserved the full video.

Heavy had a fluent Spanish speaker, Juan D. Sanchez, translate the conversation in the video because two men are speaking in Spanish as they behead what is believed on social media to be a woman or girl. He said it’s possible the victim was actually a male because the killers referred to the victim as “puto,” which is a word used to refer to men (puta would be the word for a female.) “Puto is the masculine form of the multi-functional Spanish puta, meaning ‘prostitute.’ It’s used as a slur against people who are gay and an insult to anyone perceived as weak or contemptible,” Dictionary.com reported.

Contrary to reports on social media, he said the men do not refer to a cartel. He said they said, “This is what’s going to happen to all sons of bitc***, sh**. Just like this whore, Pillo.”

He said Pillo is a name used for a male.

He said their accent indicated they’re from Mexico. Our translator told us, “Pillo is a common nickname for someone named Guadalupe, Lupe or Lupillo. The accents and the way they stress some of the words lead me to believe they are from the Guanajuato or Jalisco area.” Guanajuato is a state and city in central Mexico. In 2020, the Los Angeles Times reported that drug cartel wars had transformed Guanajuato into one of Mexico’s “deadliest states.” Jalisco is a Mexican state that has also been ripped apart by cartel violence.

This is a screenshot from the video with the victim’s face blurred out:

The original video was quickly removed, and our systems are proactively detecting and blocking attempted re-uploads of the clip to catch malicious behavior before the content can receive views. The site claims the gory video has been circulating around the Internet since 2019 and supposedly shows a 19 year old in Mexico, Newsweek reported.

One video on YouTube says Mayenggo3 is the name behind the beheading video. The video’s narrator says the young woman is shown dancing, but that only lasts a few seconds. Then a “brutal death” is shown. A man was seen “slicing a girl’s throat whose hand was tied with a rope inside a room in an unknown location.”

It’s “extremely horrific to watch,” the narrator said.

People are calling for an investigation, as it’s unclear who the girl or man is or even whether the video is real. A Twitter user explained, “theres a video going around and it shows this girl getting her head chopped off in a bathroom
ppl said it starts with a lil girl dancing and then it shows a girl in the bathroom getting her head chopped off

One site claims that men in the video pledged allegiance to a Mexican cartel before chopping the girl’s head off, but our translation indicated they don’t reference cartels.

and it has sound, it’s extremely disturbing if you understand spanish bc they kept saying things like “so she can learn to keep her mouth shut” or something like that, obviously in spanish but it’s so traumatizing
