Applications

The application form you fill out for admission to undergraduate programs at the University of Toronto depends on your current situation — whether you’re a current Ontario high school student, an applicant from another Canadian province or territory, an international applicant, or in another circumstance. Consult the categories below to determine which application you need to submit.  In all cases, you’ll apply through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) which processes applications to each of Ontario’s universities.

You are permitted to submit one type of application only. If you submit more than one application, the University of Toronto will cancel the second without refund. For example, if you submit a 105 application, then submit an International application, the International application will be cancelled without refund.

Current Ontario High School Students (OUAC 101 Application)

You should complete the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC)’s 101 Application if you:

  • are a current, full-time Ontario high-school student
  • have not been out of high school for more than seven consecutive months
  • expect to receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U/M courses by the end of the current year
  • have not attended a post-secondary institution (college/university)

International Applicants (University of Toronto International Application)

Use the University of Toronto International Application if you:

  • currently reside outside of Canada, AND
  • are not currently studying, and have not previously studied in Canada, AND
  • are not applying to any other Ontario university

Prospective international applicants who wish to apply to other Ontario universities in addition to the University of Toronto should use the OUAC 105 Application (see below).

If you have already applied with the OUAC 105 Application, you do not need to apply to the University of Toronto with the International Application. (If you submit both applications, your second application will be cancelled with no possibility of a refund.)

Note that you will need to pay a non-refundable fee of $180.

University of Toronto has contracted with the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) to provide application processing services. When you begin the application process, you will be transferred to the OUAC website where you will complete and submit your application. You will be required to create an OUAC Account (if you do not already have one). You may have only one OUAC Account. Direct any application process questions to the OUAC.

Full-Time Degree Applicants who are NOT current Ontario High School Students (OUAC 105 Application)

You should complete the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC)’s 105 Application if you:

  • are NOT currently attending an Ontario high school day program (in Ontario or abroad), AND
  • are NOT a current or former U of T student.

In addition to the OUAC application service fee, you’ll be required to pay a non-refundable University of Toronto supplementary fee of $90.

Full-Time Degree Applicants Previously or Currently Registered as Students at the University of Toronto (University of Toronto Internal Application)

Use the University of Toronto Internal Application if you:

  • have previously registered at the University of Toronto in a degree, Pre-University program, or as either a Non-degree or Visiting Student (this does not include Continuing Education studies)

If you’ve previously been a student at the University of Toronto and want to return to the same faculty or division you attended, get in touch with your former Registrar’s Office. They can help you determine whether you’re eligible to re-register, or if you must re-apply using this application.

You will need to pay a non-refundable fee of $90.

Important note for U of T Internal Transfer applicants: We will use your email address in the U of T Student Information System (ACORN) to send you application related messages & updates. If you wish to use a different email address, you will need to change it on ACORN or contact your Registrars Office.

You will be required to create an OUAC Account (if you do not already have one). You may have only one OUAC Account. Direct any application process questions to the OUAC.

Applicants Intending to Study Part-Time (Part-Time Application)

Use the Part-Time Application if you:

  • wish to enrol as a part-time student in arts, science, commerce/management, or engineering courses towards a degree.

Note that students attending a daytime program in secondary school should NOT use this form. Instead, they should apply in the same way as applicants intending to study full time (using one of the OUAC Applications). Applicants currently registered at another institution are not eligible to enrol in the summer session.

Part-time students can take courses during the day and evening (when available). Although most programs may be taken part-time, students who are only able to attend classes in the evening should consult the appropriate online timetable at University of Toronto.

If you were previously registered at the University of Toronto and want to return to the same faculty or division you attended previously, contact your former Registrar’s Office to determine whether you are eligible to re-register or are required to re-apply using this application.

Note that you will need to pay a non-refundable fee of $90.

Non-Degree Applicants (Non-Degree Application)

Use the Non-Degree Application if you wish to upgrade your university record to qualify for graduate school, a professional program, or for personal interest. Non-degree students enrol in arts, science or commerce/management degree credit courses, for which they have the prerequisites, but are not proceeding towards a degree. Admission consideration is based on your entire postsecondary academic record and your most recent annual average (GPA).

Please get in touch with your former/current Registrar’s Office if you are a:

  • former student at the University of Toronto and want to return to the same faculty or division you attended, or
  • former or current Non-degree student within the Faculty of Arts and Science St. George, UTM or UTSC wanting to take Non-degree courses within one of these other divisions. They can help you determine whether you’re eligible to re-register, or if you must re-apply using this application.

Please also be advised that:

  • Faculty of Arts & Science (U of T St. George): Non-Degree students may not enrol in Rotman Commerce courses.
  • U of T Mississauga: An undergraduate degree from a recognized institution is required. Non-Degree students may not enrol in Commerce or Management courses.
  • U of T Scarborough: Only first-year courses may be considered for Non-Degree students in Management or Economics.
  • Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education: Please email the Faculty directly or visit the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education’s website.
  • If you would like to pursue Non-Degree studies in a professional division (e.g., Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, Faculty of Music), you must contact the division directly.

Details About Applying to U of T

We encourage you to apply well in advance of the posted deadlines.  Spaces fill quickly and programs may close before the application deadlines listed  (See Important Application Dates).

Approximately one week after we receive your application we will send you an email acknowledgement that includes your JOINid/UTORid, your University of Toronto applicant number, and full information about the next steps in the application process.

When we correspond with you it may be by email or by post (mailing address). Please ensure that your application information includes an active email address and up to date mailing address.

Your eligibility for admission will be considered once your complete academic record and any additional information requested by the division to which you have applied have been received.  You must submit full documentation for all secondary and post-secondary studies you have attempted.  Be sure to submit all required documents in advance of the published supporting document deadlines.

In considering students for admission and scholarships, the University reserves the right to give preference to students whose grades represent their first attempt.

University policies on access to student records and personal privacy allow us to communicate only with the applicant unless we have the written permission of the applicant to discuss the application with a third party.

We reserve the right to require recent, government-issued photo identification for verification purposes.

The University of Toronto does not interact with agencies (educational “agents”) in order to recruit students to undergraduate programs.

How your application is considered

We first verify that you meet the University’s general admission requirements. These are basic requirements that all candidates must meet to be eligible for University of Toronto admission consideration. The general requirements, including our English language requirements, are outlined by educational jurisdiction in the Requirements section.

Secondly, we assess whether you meet program-specific requirements for your intended area of study.  Do you have the necessary subject pre-requisites and have you completed any required personal statement, supplementary application or audition?

The University of Toronto does not have the capacity to admit all applicants who meet the minimum general and program-specific requirements. We seek to admit the best possible students on the basis of academic performance and potential, and will select students for admission based on competitive strength.

The emphasis of our final assessment will be placed on the results of your most recent two years of study, including your marks in prerequisite courses, and on the strength of your supplemental information (personal statement, profile, etc) where this is required. However, we may also consider other aspects of your complete academic record including, but not limited to: consistency; where and when courses were completed; and the number of times any courses have been attempted.

Recognizing that not all current Canadian high school applicants will be able to present results according to the usual timeline, U of T will make conditional offers of admission throughout the year on the basis of your available Grade 11 and 12 marks; this assessment is possible provided your record (OUAC record for Ontario high school applicants) shows that you are enrolled in all required Grade 12 courses. If a Grade 12 mark in a pre-requisite subject is not available, we will use the mark in the corresponding Grade 11 course.

In Canadian jurisdictions where Diploma/Provincial exams are now optional, when considering an applicant’s final results for Fall 2022 admission, we will use the final mark on a transcript whether a Diploma/Provincial exam was written or not.

While educational jurisdictions around the world are adjusting their evaluation methods, grading processes, or using alternative methods of assessment, such adjustments will not negatively effect Fall 2022 admission consideration.  We will continue to monitor the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the school year and will be as flexible as possible throughout the admission process.

Full disclosure of all academic information must be made at the time of application, and any request for special consideration must be submitted to Enrolment Services as soon as possible following your application.

Globalization and ensuring diversity within the international student population is a key priority of the University of Toronto.  We are committed to balancing our international student body so that a wide range of regions and countries are represented.   This is essential to making sure that both our domestic and international students have a truly global experience, reflecting the many and varied viewpoints that international students bring to the classroom.

When admission decisions are made, and alternate offers

You will receive a decision from all of the University of Toronto faculties you selected. Those who are not admitted to their selected program(s) may be considered for alternate programs and campuses, space permitting.  Admission decisions are released between late-January and late May.

It is always wise to apply and submit required documentation well in advance of deadlines in order to maximize your opportunities for admission consideration.

Waitlists

As a pilot for the September 2022 admissions cycle, we will be utilizing a waitlist for undergraduate admission for some program areas. Since we are unable to admit all students who have good academic records, our waitlist is an opportunity for eligible undergraduate applicants to be reconsidered for admission. Find out more about the waitlist.

Residence decisions

If you are interested in residence, you must complete a separate application.  Go to StarRez to apply and to learn about the residence guarantee.

Conditional Offers of Admission:  How to keep your offer of admission

Most of our admission decisions are based on interim marks, and so our offers are typically conditional on achieving acceptable final standing.  Students are expected to maintain consistent academic standing for the duration of their high school (and post-secondary, if applicable) studies.

The terms of the offer, including conditions and specific minimum grade thresholds, are described in the terms and conditions section of your offer letter.  Admitted students who do not meet the required condition(s) can expect to have their offer rescinded and will not be permitted to register.

Fraudulent Information or Documentation

You should be aware that when you submit your application you are required to certify that the personal information and documents submitted in the application, or to be submitted (all of which constitutes the application), are true, complete and correct in all respects. If evidence is found to the contrary, your admission to the University may be rescinded, your registration may be revoked, or you could be subject to additional academic penalties.  Other universities may also be notified.

If you are not admitted to U of T

The most common reasons for not being admitted to the University of Toronto:

  • your overall average, or grades in prerequisite subjects, are not competitive
  • you did not present a senior level/Grade 12 English course for admission consideration
  • you did not present a senior level/Grade 12 course in all prerequisite subjects required for program(s) you applied to
  • you have repeated an unacceptable number of courses for the program(s) you have selected
  • you have an insufficient number of available courses at the time of consideration
  • you applied to a program that does not accept applicants with post-secondary studies
  • English language requirement (if applicable) was not met by the deadline
  • supplementary information (if required) was not submitted, or was not competitive

Review of Decisions

All admissions decisions are final.  In extraordinary circumstances, a decision may be reviewed for procedural fairness and lawfulness.

In the case of first-entry undergraduate admissions, requests for review should be uploaded to the applicant portal within seven (7) calendar days of the date of issue of the admission decision.  For other academic programs, please consult the relevant website or office.

Required Documents

After you have applied for admission, visit join.utoronto.ca often to find complete information about the documents required to complete your application.

You must submit full documentation (transcripts) for all secondary and post-secondary studies attempted.  Depending on your academic background and/or the program(s) to which you have applied, you may also be required to submit the online ‘self-reported grades’ form, proof of English language proficiency, standardized test results, or other supplemental information. Notarized translations of any documents issued in a language other than English or French are also required.

Whenever possible, transcripts and test scores must be submitted electronically.  In the event that electronic submission of your results is not possible, you will be given the opportunity to upload your documents.  The admissions committee will usually consider uploaded (unofficial) documents in order to make a provisional admission decision.  However, official transcripts  – received directly from the issuing institution – may be required at any time during the admission process, and are always required to finalize an offer of admission.  When required, official transcripts should be mailed to:  Enrolment Services, 172 St. George St., Toronto ON M5R 0A3.

Documents received by Enrolment Services become the property of the University and will not be returned or forwarded to other institutions. We do not retain documents from previous applications.  Do not submit any irreplaceable documents to Enrolment Services.
