How do you drink vodka without tasting it?

A new trend on TikTok comes with a bold claim: Add a little baking soda, a pinch of salt, and some water to vodka or tequila, and you won’t be able to taste the alcohol.

The hack originates with TikToker @chixy, who said this “makes it a little too easy to drink.” She starts off with a glass full of ice and fills up her cup about halfway with clear liquor. Then, she adds a splash of mineral water, a tiny pinch of baking soda (“barely any”), and a little bit of salt (again, “barely any”). If you still taste the alcohol, she recommends adding a little more salt.

Since her video was posted on September 4, it has gotten 18 million views and countless people have tried the hack themselves. TikToker @callmebelly took a sip and made a shocked face before concluding, correctly, “That is dangerous.” His video has almost three million views itself. Jenna Hassan of @jenna.hassan also tried it and was just as shocked.

Some commenters were not impressed by this hack, however, pointing out that the combination is basically just the ingredients of club soda, a popular mixer for alcohol. Some swear by this trick, while others say it worked about as well as any other common mixer. Someone on reddit even made a thread about it, poking fun at the creators.

“Next up: ‘let's go crazy and mix alcohol and juice,’” one user joked, alluding to the fact that the hack simply dilutes the alcohol, thus obviously minimizing the taste. But tons of people on TikTok have tried it and are blown away at the results.

People on TikTok are sharing a 'hack' that helps you to knock back shots without immediately throwing up:

The discovery has been doing the rounds on TikTok, with users finding that if they breathe out before and after swallowing the alcohol, they won't taste it.

The trick, which works with anything you put in your mouth, is a result of your sense of smell making up about 80 percent of what you perceive to be taste.

But other TikTok users had questions.

One asked, reasonably: "Then why you still drinking it if you guys don't like the taste IDK, I'm genuinely confused."

Dr Simran Deo, a doctor at online doctor website Zava, told LADbible: "Some studies have found the blood alcohol levels achieved on drinking on an empty stomach can be up to four times higher than after eating."

Deo explained: "On an empty stomach the blood alcohol levels tend to reach their highest about one hour after drinking and this then reduces over the next 4 hours.

"When food is present in the stomach it reduces the absorption of alcohol by slowing down the processes used in emptying it."

Also useful to know, a meal before drinking may even help with the severity of your hangover the next day.

Dr Kathryn Basford, also an online doctor at Zava, added: "Food slows down the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream, and also speeds up how quickly your body starts to break down alcohol and remove it.

"This means that blood alcohol levels will be higher and will increase faster if you drink on an empty stomach.

"So you're more likely to feel drunk faster if you don't eat before, and also more likely to experience the negative effects of alcohol - feeling flushed, nauseous, headaches, etc."

She added: "As long as you eat a meal before drinking, it will help with the effects of the alcohol, and a subsequent hangover."
