How long do overnight oats last Reddit

Hi,

So thanks to this thread I discovered overnight oats which solved the breakfast problem but sometimes I would forget them for 2 or three days and end up throwing them away because I think they went bad or something.

Do I have to consume the oats the next day or can they stay find for a couple of days?

UPDATE: Thank you all very much! I ended up eating it and it was perfectly ok ( the oatmeal was five days old or so).

I keep overnight oats in Mason jars (oats, chia seeds, almond milk, yogurt, banana) 4 days max in the fridge. Make them Sunday and by Thursday morning you can tell they're not as fresh.

level 2

I make Steelcut oats, leave them out on the stove the first night, in the fridge every night after, and reheat them every morning. Personally I don't notice a difference even after 7-8 days.

level 1

I find after 36 hrs they seem a bit stringy in texture. I'm a bit sensitive to it and it takes some willpower for me to eat them at that point.

level 1

What makes you think they went bad? The smell? Taste?

As long as they smell and taste good, they're still fine.

level 2

Just the fact they stayed a couple of days?

level 1

What do you put in them? You could prep the ingredients and assemble 3 days then 2? So, get the jars and oats. I chop apples w cinnamon, so do a big bowl. Then raisins.

The night before, combine! Keeps it fresh but still saves steps.

level 2

I just put milk on them, put them in air tight plastic container and stick them on the shelf in the fridge. I add the other stuff when I wanna eat them

I make 5 days worth on Sunday. Never had a problem on the last day (Friday).

level 1

I think the biggest issue is that the oats get really mushy, not that the milk is spoiling. You'll know right away if the milk went sour.

level 2

True, it pains me to throw them away though:(

I usually prep for 5 days

I keep mine for 5 days sometimes. I meal prep for the whole week

level 2

Thank you so much! I had it for breakfast today and t was perfectly fine

level 1

I prep mine 5 days in advance. I use water instead of milk so that might help with it staying fresh longer. I have not had any issues by day 5 but I feel like I would not keep it longer than that though.

level 2

I used water only once, I had to “tolerate” the blandness of the taste. I am still questioning how healthy oatmeal actually is because of the very high carbs content, plus I add a drizzle of maple syrup...

I was thinking about making overnight oats for the whole week, but I don't know whether it will be spoiled by the end of the week or not

I regularly make them for a week. You'll be fine.

level 1

I would not make them more than 2 nights in advance

level 1

I find them a bit too soggy/mush by day 3 but in terms of spoiling there fine for longer.

level 1

I make a batch for breakfast and the container I use holds four days worth. I've done it five days in advance before with no problem. A stir each day and they have been fine.

level 1

I make a weeks worth then just add the milk the day before or a couple days before.

level 1

I make them for a week but freeze then after 2-3 days. (I like mushy oatmeal) I also eat my overnight oats hot, especially during the cold months

I often make oatmeal and store it old jam jars in the fridge. It lasts a couple weeks without issue.

I also have the best apple oatmeal recipe. It works best if you stir it every hour or so but I've done it overnight too. The toughest part is peeling and coring all the apples. You can use less sugar if you want but the amount I use seems to be just enough.

1 & 1/3 Cup Steel Cut Oats

4 Cups Coconut Water

1/4 Cup Sugar

1/4 Cup (real) Maple Syrup

1/4 Cup Whole Milk

1tbs Butter

1tbs Molasses

3-4 Granny Smith Apples, pealed, cored & chopped into bite sized pieces

1tbs Vanilla

Smear the sides of the crockpot with the butter and toss the remaining bit in. Put everything else in the crockpot except for the vanilla. Cook on lowest setting for 6 to 8 hours, stirring every hour. When it's done, stir in the vanilla.

We recommend storing overnight oats in the refrigerator in airtight containers for up to five days. That means if you're meal-prepping on Sunday, you can make a work week's worth of overnight oats and not have to think about breakfast again until Saturday.

Can I eat overnight oats after 7 days?

Overnight oats can be stored in an airtight container for up to five days in the refrigerator. The caveat is that they'll continue to soften the longer they sit — which might be a bonus if you like your oatmeal on the super-creamy side.

How many days in advance can I make overnight oats?

advises that overnight oats can be made up to four days in advance. The longer your oats sit in the fridge, the soggier they will become. If you like a particularly smooth and creamy texture, inspect the oats before digging in. Foods Guy warns that oats made with milk have a better chance of going bad.

Can you eat overnight oats after 4 days?

When stored in an airtight container in the fridge overnight oats should last for up to 5 days. They will soften more the longer they sit so I find they're best on days 1-3, but they're still safe to eat on days 4 and 5. With this said, overnight oats are great for meal prep.
