how long to grow black mens hair?

How long is 3 inches of hair black male

I have short black mens hair (afro), it is buzzed at the moment but i want to grow a sweet afro. Every time I tried to grow my hair to medium length i find it takes a long time to get any length at all. I always end up buzzing it as i get tired of waiting. Im glad i found this forum and can ask, how long does afro hair take from buzzed to medium length to grow an afro? I really want to grow my hair is just it take sooo long

Thank you (im new here so i hope this question is right in this section)

Hi Tyrone,

Kinky hair (as a hair type) takes the longest to yield what I call "visible length"; this is the length that you see when you look at hair without extending it. All hair types factually grow the same, which is about 0.5 inches per month; however, because kinky hair has extremely-tight coils, the hair length it yields visibly looks less, but, trust me, your hair is growing as long as someone with straight hair or any other hair type.

If your hair is at a buzzed length (i.e. near-shaved length) then it will take you approximately 3 years to reach 6 inches of "visible length". Mind you, your kinky hair will be 18 inches long by then, but it will be so tightly coiled that only 6 inches will be visible.

Let me know if you have other questions and welcome to the forum, buddy.

RE: how long to grow black mens hair?

Black mens hair (here we call it kinky hair) takes very long to grow. Like Curly Hair explained kinky hair has so tight coils we just have to put up with this disadvantage. When i stretch my coils they are so long but then they go back to their natural position and it looks so short. Buy the Curly Hair Book bro as it is all explained there and will help you so much like it did to me to understand your own curly kinky hair

RE: how long to grow black mens hair?

Unfortunately kinky hair is notoriously known for taking extraordinary amounts of time and patience to grow long even when you know what youre doing. Like member Curly Hair explained, kinky hair takes the longest route (bends) instead of the shortest route (straight) to grow.

Hi guys,

I also have the kinky hair type. I was just wondering, if any of you guys had any tips for maintenance. I usually do an avacado deep conditioning mix like twice a week and moisturize my hair every morning after a shower with sulfur 8 and castor oil. Any other tips for growth?

Also, is it bad that i wash my hair with water in the shower everyday? And also, how often in a day should i be moisturizing my hair? twice a day?

Thanks!!

Yes, use a good hair conditioner at least 3 times a week. The conditioner is left 2 minutes on the hair after the shampoo (or even if you don't shampoo) as you shower. Also consider using a leave-in conditioner as this hair product is great for kinky curly hair!

Have you read The Curly Hair Book BTW? I recommend you to pick it up if you haven't yet, everything you need to know including conditioners is explained in the book to great lengths. Rogelio (the author of the book) also explains nutrition for hair which is also very important to grow hair fast, vitamin C and zinc will help a lot!

But like I said, definitively invest in a conditioner (maybe even buy a conditioner pack at the same time as you grab The Curly Hair Book on amazon so you get discounts etc).

Hey,

thanks for the reply. Well, the avacado mix that i use is literally mashed up avacado with olive oil and honey spreaded across my head and then left to dry. I usually leave it on my hair for like at least an hr or so, then wash off.

Ah, just checked the book out on amazon. Look's pretty interesting. May pick it up, sometime. I have heard this - that zinc helps with hair growth but i just thought it was one of those hear say things. Shall, i try and take zinc supplements?

Also, i have heard over the years that apparently black people with kinky hair types shouldn't be washing their hair every day(morning wise). Is there any truth to that? I usually have a shower every morning and end up wetting my hair alongside the washing of my body. Shall i only be allowing to let water touch my hair like once a week or something? I don't have like an afro or something but a really small fro (or twa to be precise)

Also guys,

At nights, my hair feels usually dry and is sort of itchy. Like mentioned in my previous post, i usually use a cream called sulfur 8 and castor oil (mixed together) on my hair. I have been thinking, should i rub a lil castor oil on my hair at nights to give my hair moisture? Or is that too much?

I put a little bit of oil in my curls -- just the tips and use a do rag i bought from this thread so the hair keeps protected etc its actually good to cover the tips with oil like castol oil -- I use coconut butter melted. Big difference in my curls.
Was considering a sleep cap but not ready for that chit yet lol

RE: how long to grow black mens hair?

Good stuff mate, I get a lot of black lads at the barbershop wanting to grow their kinks and they constantly tell me of how much time it takes to get their hair type to be long.
Remember tho all hair types grow at the same rate its just that kinky hair "looks" like it sshorter. If you have Rogelio's The Curly Hair book he explains about the 2 lengths for curly hair and how it grows.

RE: how long to grow black mens hair?

My experience is that it takes a long time because the curls really eat up the real length of the hair. This is explained in the curly hair book by dividing the two forms of curly hair length, extended and natural, if I remember correctly since I just started reading this book. I wasn't even aware of this and the difference is crazy. Your curly hair as it is in a natural state is about 50% shorter than its real hair length.

I have coiled curly hair so I was blown away when I tried the test in the book to show what a difference there really is. But afaik mens hair grows the same real extended length if it's straight hair or curly hair, it doesn't matter.

My sister used to complain a lot about not getting much length until I explained to her this difference in real vs extended lengths. She relaxed her hair which I didn't agree with but anyway, and she suddenly got a lot of length she wasn't aware of. She wanted length so nothing I could do to try to keep her curly.
