How long to cook short ribs in oven at 375

Introduction

These are one of our favorites when we get the hankering for some good home barbecued food. We used to use Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauce but have found a new, much easier on the diet grilling sauce put out by Sweet Baby Ray.

The ribs themselves yield about 1/3 to 1/4 of their weight as edible meat. So of the 2 packs of ribs where the combined weight is 260 oz. we figure the overall yield is roughly 65 oz. The rest is bone, fat and cartiledge.

These ribs are absolutely one of our favorite meals.

They're served best with a baked potato (make mine a yam), a tossed salad, a side of vegetable (I like steamed asparagus).

Prep is minimal when you already have your grilling sauce on hand.

Ingredients

    - 2 packs of bone in Beef Back Ribs (approximately 3.5 pounds per pack)
    - 3/4 jars of Sweet Baby Ray's grilling sauce (12 oz)
    - 1 tbsp ground, black pepper (or to taste)
    - 1 tbsp ground dried garlic powder (or to taste)
    - 1 tbsp dried onion flakes (or to taste)

Directions

Makes 6 servings of 2-3 bone in ribs each (approximately 10-12 oz of meat) however this varies depending upon the number of ribs in each package. There's usually 7 to 8 ribs in each package.

Using 16 total ribs...

Preparation:

- remove ribs from package. Separate them with a knife if not already seperated.
- wash the ribs and set aside.
- mix all dry ingredients in a small dish. Blend them thouroughly.
- spray a large baking pan capable of holding all of the ribs (layered if need be) with Pam or other non stick spray.
- place the ribs in the large baking pan. Again, layer them if necessary while sprinkling the dry ingredients over each layer.
- cover with foil.

Cooking:

- preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- place covered pan of ribs on the middle rack and cook for two hours. Turn the ribs once after the first hour. Drain grease from the pan when you turn the ribs.
- after the second hour remove the pan from the oven, remove the cover
- paint the grilling sauce evenly over the ribs. we use approximately 3/4 of the jar. you'll have to remove layered ribs to be able to get the grilling sauce on the lowest layer of them.
- return the ribs, uncovered onto the middle rack in the oven at 375 degrees F.
- cook for an additional hour.
- remove and enjoy

The meat on these ribs should be falling off the bone when done.

Beef Ribs 101

Are Beef Ribs And Short Ribs The Same?

No, beef back ribs and short ribs are not the same. So what’s the difference?

How long to cook short ribs in oven at 375

Beef Back Ribs vs Short Ribs

One of their biggest difference is meat placement. Beef back ribs have more meat in between the bones. On the other hand, beef short ribs can have about 2” of meat on top of the bones.

Beef back ribs are taken from the cow’s top dorsal area just a little behind the shoulder and are usually about 6 to 8 inches long. These are prime cut ribs and are more expensive than short ribs. They are commonly used in making BBQ Beef Ribs.

Short ribs are cut from the plate of the cow and are most pit master’s pride and joy. They are usually 12 inches long and are used by the best Texas smokehouses. They are more versatile and can be braised, roasted, or grilled.

Oven-Baked BBQ Beef Ribs: My Family Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 racks beef back ribs
  • Liquid smoke
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 ½ tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon smoked salt
  • 2 tablespoons black pepper, cracked
  • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • 1 – 2 cups barbeque sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepping the beef ribs. Rinse the racks and pat dry with paper towels. Now use the sharp point of a knife to lift off the papery membrane sticking to the bones. Then use paper towels or a clean dishcloth to pull it off completely from the rack.
  2. Make it smokey! Splash liquid smoke all over the ribs. Rub it in for the flavor to stick to the meat. This is to give it a smokey taste even without grilling it.
Making it taste like an authentic BBQ Beef Rib. Then coat it with olive oil to help the rub cling to the ribs.
  3. Make the rub. Transfer all the spices in a small bowl and mix until equally combined. Douse the rub all over the rack and pat it down with your hand.
Like gently massaging the spices into the ribs.
  4. Let it chill. Put the racks in a foil-lined baking pan and leave it in the fridge for 4 to 12 hours for the best results. Take the racks out to let it rest at room temperature 30 minutes before baking.
  5. Prep the ribs for baking. While preheating the oven to 250° F, cover the rib with another foil, sealing it with the bottom foil to make a pouch. This is to ensure that steam won’t escape while the rib is baking.
  6. Let it bake. Place the baking pan in the center rack and leave it to bake for 3 ½ hours. I prefer to bake the ribs low and slow to keep them juicy. This is what makes them fall off the bone tender too.
Check the rib after 3 ½ hours if the internal temperature reaches 203° F or if it’s already fork-tender.
  7. Make it sticky! This is where I brush the ribs with my homemade sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. Not too much that it overpowers the flavor of the rub, but just enough to make it sticky.
I then put it back in the oven uncovered to broil on low for about 5 to 10 minutes. If you don’t have a broiler, just put it back in the oven for another 20 to 30 minutes.
  8. Indulge! Let it rest for about 30 minutes and serve with your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • If you don’t have liquid smoke at home or having trouble finding one, you can skip it and rub it with just olive oil instead. You can also use kosher salt or sea salt if you don’t have smoked salt.
  • If you have kids and don’t want to make it too spicy, you can also cut back on black pepper, Cajun, and paprika.
  • You can get your favorite store-bought BBQ sauce or make your own.

Easy Barbecue Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 ¼ bottle ketchup (I personally prefer Heinz)
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 ½ teaspoons ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper or 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Place a large saucepan in medium-high heat. Sauté sweet onion and garlic in olive oil until translucent. Then stir in ketchup, molasses, apple cider vinegar, honey, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Once it’s well combined, add the remaining ingredients and whisk again.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes or until you reach your desired consistency. Stir occasionally to keep it from sticking to the bottom of the pan and burning.
  4. Cool for 10 to 15 to 20 minutes before transferring to an airtight container. This sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to a month.

What Kind Of Beef Ribs To Buy?

It depends on your budget and who you’re serving it to. As I mentioned, prime cut beef back ribs are more expensive than short ribs. But I find that it is THE best for this recipe.

All the flavor sink into the meat and kids find it fun to gnaw the meat from the bones!

However, if you want a more affordable option, go with short ribs. It’s just as flavorful and has more meat in it. Also, if you have elderly visitors, it’s easier for them to eat this than beef back ribs.

How To Cook The Best Oven Baked Beef Ribs: My Tips

  • If you have the time, make the rub and BBQ sauce from scratch. It tastes much better and you can control the sweetness or spiciness of it.
  • Make little cuts on the meat of the rib. This allows the spices and sauce to sink deep into the rib.
  • Always go with a low and slow baking option if you have the time. This makes for more tender and juicy beef ribs.

What Side Dish Goes With Oven Baked Beef Ribs

Mom tip: Always serve your oven baked ribs with a side dish. Especially if you have kids.

The side dish contrasts the spiciness of the rib, helping the little ones enjoy it better! This also makes for a healthier, more filling meal.

Potato Salad – One of the easiest ones to make, is a good old potato salad. Peel and boil a bunch of halved Yukon potatoes. Then mix mayo, mustard, green onions, a dash of apple cider vinegar, and chopped hard-boiled eggs.

Pour the mixture into the drained potatoes and you have yourself a tasty side dish!

Baked Beans – Another quick recipe is baked beans. Fry up some bacon and onions, add molasses, brown sugar, mustard, and 2 to 4 cans of pork and beans.

Transfer to a baking pan and you can put it in the oven with the Ribs for 45 minutes to an hour. Hitting two birds with one stone, aren’t we?

Mac & Cheese – THIS IS THE ULTIMATE COMBINATION. Just imagine it, sticky oven baked beef ribs and creamy mac and cheese all in one plate. Excuse me while I drool over here. Simmer milk in a large pot then add the elbow macaroni.

Once it’s al dente, add butter, sharp cheddar, and salt and pepper to taste. Fold together until the cheese and butter melts. Just in case you didn’t notice, this is all made in ONE POT!

Can I Finish My Ribs In The Oven?

Yes! If you’re smoking the beef ribs, you can still finish it in the oven. This would help make it more tender and lock in the flavor.

Simply preheat your oven to 250° F on the last 20 to 30 minutes of smoking the ribs. Then transfer the ribs to a foil-lined baking pan and cover it with another foil on top to seal the steam. Leave it in the oven for another 2 hours.

Baste it with your preferred BBQ sauce in the last 20 minutes and put back in the oven uncovered.

What Temp Should Beef Ribs Be Cooked At?

The best temperature to cook ribs is anywhere from 250° to 300° F. This way the ribs cook low and slow, making it more tender and keeping it juicy at the same time.
