This article provides the top 25 most valuable and collectible Charizard Pokémon cards. Every card on this list is authenticated and graded by PSA, a third-party grading company. If you hold a card on this list and it is not graded, chances are the value is nowhere near the listed price. You must submit your card to PSA for grading and receive a high grade to achieve these selling prices. In contrast, if you’re buying Charizard cards, it is best to buy them already graded and authenticated. Remember, collect what you like and buy what you can afford.

2018 Sun & Moon Set

Starting off the list at number 16 is this beautiful and unique Ultra Shiny, Full Art, Charizard GX from the 2018 Japanese Sun and Moon set. This set was released in Japan and got the Pokémon community, collectively, more excited about a release than any other modern set.

It contains reprints from earlier sets and has a massive 375 cards in the master set, the most significant set. Getting your hands on this beautiful blue beauty in gem mint condition will only get more expensive as availability becomes more limited. So far, it’s proving to be more scarce than initially projected.

Population Reports

As of writing this article, PSA has graded 467 of the Ultra Shiny Charizards, with 400 in gem mint condition. This number is surprisingly low compared to the Burning Shadows Charizard GX secret rare, which is next on the list.

2019 Team Up Black Star Charizard Staff Cards

Like previous sets, The Pokemon Company held events for the release of the 2019 Team-Up set. They gave specially made Staff cards to those that participated in the event. Only some stores received Charizard cards; the company gave some stores Gyarados, Machamp, or Mewtwo. Therefore, they are relatively rare and collectible.

Team Up Staff prerelease cards look identical to the regular prerelease promos except for the gold Staff stamp on the bottom left corner of the holographic box.

How many has PSA graded?

PSA graded 590 of the English Staff Charizard holos, with 91 grading gem mint 10, 378 mint 9, and the remaining PSA 8 or less. There are two other cards, including Italian and Spanish, to look for, which are much rarer than the English version.

2017 Sun & Moon Set

The #15 spot is the 2017 Sun & Moon Burning Shadows Secret Rare Charizard GX #150. PSA 10 graded examples are selling for $450 on average. We can expect this price to go up by donning the new-age rare rainbow foil look. Especially when we see the population report.

Investment Potential

This was the first year Wizards of the Coast printed these Secret Hyper Rares with rainbow foil and unique texture. Because it’s the first of its kind, we expect the value to go up as WOTC produces other similar sets.

Population Reports

PSA has graded a staggering 1,421 Charizard hyper rares. Less than half of the Charizard hyper rares were in gem mint condition, totaling 617. 611 were in mint 9 conditions, and 144 were in NM-MT 8. So, it’s not the most straightforward card to grade, but your chances are still pretty good.

PSA graded 1,900 Charizard Flashfire holos, with 182 grading gem mint 10, 900 mint 9, and the remaining PSA 8 or less. Due to the black borders and sensitive material, these are relatively challenging to find in gem mint conditions.

2000 Team Rocket 1st Edition set.

In the 2000 Pokémon 1st edition Team Rocket set, we find the second 1st Edition Charizard Pokémon card ever printed. The artwork on these is entirely different than the base set. We get an aerial view of the top of Charizard as he soars through the night sky. The Dark Charizard holographic is highly collectible and valuable when found in gem mint condition.

The cards were printed in the early 2000s with lower attack and hit points. We only see 80 HP, which isn’t much at all. Especially for Stage 2 Pokémon. So, this is an excellent card for collecting but not great.

Population Reports

The population report for the gem mint 10s verifies just how rare they are. With over 1,600 1st edition holos submitted to PSA, only 361 were given the gem mint 10 approval. That’s less than a 20% chance of success if submitting one yourself. On average, they sell for around $548, which seems like a steal.

The 2004 EX holo is one of Charizard’s best Pokemon cards to play and collect, so the values are high.

PSA 10 examples sold for as much as $8,300 in February 2021; however, it has since decreased to an average of $3,500. PSA 9 examples sell between $900-$1,100, making this one of his more valuable cards in mint condition.

1997 Carddass Vending Cards

Here’s a truly unique Charizard Pokémon card distributed throughout Japan in vending machines. Similarly, Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball Z cards were available in Carddass vending machines.

Initially, Bandai created vending machines to distribute cards as collectibles. But, as the popularity of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh grew, they eventually made the cards playable in a game. The first Carddass card was released in 1988 and was based on the Saint Seiya anime series.

Card Details

The front of these prisms screams for attention with the highly reflective prism pattern in the background. Pocket Monsters text is prominently displayed on the bottom in a purple reflective foil finish, complementing the orange prismatic background.

Population Reports

175 of the Carddass Charizards have made their way into PSA for grading. With only 45 found in gem mint 10 conditions, it’s safe to say they are relatively rare in such conditions.

I would expect the prices to increase as the popularity of this early Charizard Pokémon card continues to grow.

2016 XY Staff Prerelease

Falling in at number 9 on the list is the 2016 Pokémon XY Charizard Staff Prerelease card. These were given to a limited number of distributors that held prerelease XY events in 2016. The cards with the Staff stamp were intended to be given to the staff members or judges that helped run the event. They weren’t all Charizards, though.

Four Pokémon staff prelease cards were given out, including Mewtwo, Blastoise, Machamp, and Charizard. Stores were given just one of the four, with Charizard being the most valuable.

Staff cards look identical to the promo Charizard cards except for the gold Staff stamp on the bottom left of the holographic box.

Population Reports

The number of Charizard Staff cards produced is unknown, but we see that 317 have been submitted to PSA. Of those 317, only 37 were in gem mint condition. Making these cards in near-perfect condition very rare.

2003 Skyridge Set

Coming in at number 7 and just barely beating the NEO Destiny Shining Charizard is the 2003 Skyridge Charizard Holo. The artwork in this set is exceptionally detailed, unique, and attractive, making it a highly collectible set.

We get up close and personal with Charizard, whose claws appear to pop off the card. He has a fierce look on his face, with his fiery tail waving in the background. It appears as if he were preparing for a dragon tail attack.

Population Reports

Proving to be rarer than his prior cards, the Skyridge Charizard has had just 386 submitted to PSA. With only 153 landing a gem mint 10 grade, you have about a 50% chance of success if submitting one yourself. These odds aren’t bad, but what are the odds of pulling one today? Slim to none. This is why these sell for so much in gem mint condition.

2002 Legendary Collection Holographic

The 2002 Pokémon Legendary Collection Charizard holo is further down the list of valuable Charizard cards. This card resembles the base set Charizard with the shadow, except this one has the legendary collection medal in the bottom right corner of the character box. Also, the year says 2002 on the bottom instead of 1995.

Legendary Collection is a collectible and loved set among Pokémon collectors. Is that enough to validate the $5,000+ price tag? The value of this particular Charizard is so high because of its condition.

Population Reports

Today, only 10 PSA gem mint 10’s exist, making it one of his rarest cards. If it weren’t for the PSA 10 grade and label, this card would be worth a lot less. It’s currently going for $200 in PSA 9 mint condition.

1996 Japanese Basic Set

The fourth highest-selling Charizard card is the Shining Charizard from the 2002 NEO Destiny 1st edition set. What makes this card truly unique is how Wizards of the Coast made the Pokémon shiny opposed to the traditional foil background. It allows this card to stand out from the rest, making it a must-have for most collectors.

Furthermore, this is the last year WOTC used the 1st edition logo and is the final of the four NEO sets. Moreover, it is Charizard’s third card with the 1st edition logo.

Population Report

440 have been submitted, and 184 were found in gem mint 10 conditions. The remainder of the grades tapers off down to a PSA 1. A good chunk of the found Charizards has been played and damaged, leaving the value of a gem mint copy constantly rising.

2002 Legendary Collection Set

The 2002 Legendary Collection set holds the #12 highest-selling Charizard Pokémon card. Surprisingly, the reverse holo is not this set’s most expensive Charizard card. However, the reverse holo is still valuable and highly attractive. It is genuinely one-of-a-kind.

Population Reports

Since 2002, collectors have pulled and submitted just 543 of the Charizard reverse holos. For being one of the more popular sets, it is incredibly low. Within 17 years, only 543 have been found and submitted. So, the card shown here is just 1 of 68.

2006 Gold Star Set

Holding steady at number 8 on this list is the 2006 EX Dragon Frontiers Charizard Gold Star holo #100. This is the first set where the Pokémon are shown coming out of the character box, appearing to pop off the card. Another unique feature of this is that all Pokémon were basic Pokémon and had already evolved.

This is the only Charizard card where he requires darkness energy for his attacks instead of his usual fire energy. It’s quite a unique card that makes him almost an utterly different Pokémon.

Population Reports

845 Gold Star Charizard have been submitted to PSA, with only 76 being in gem mint 10. Another exceedingly difficult set to grade with only 9% of cards being in gem mint 10 conditions. Very tough to get and a great investment option.

Only for the die-hard Charizard collectors is the 1995 Japanese Topsun Holofoil. The cracked ice pattern background is unique to this particular set, making this card shine. 1995 is related to the Nintendo trademark and not the production of the card.

Topsun cards were printed in 1997 since Pokémon didn’t exist until 1996. These were the first Pokémon cards ever printed, which should make them the most valuable, right?

Population Reports

These holofoils are both incredibly rare and difficult to grade. PSA has seen just 79 of them and declared only 16 in gem mint condition. Currently, there is one on eBay listed for $10,000 or the best offer with 106 watchers.

We’ll have to see what the seller lets it go for. With only 16 in existence and the rising popularity of this set, I wouldn’t let it go for anything less than $5,000.

How many Charizard GX cards are there?
Check the value of Charizard’s 1996 No Rarity Symbol on eBay

1996 Japanese No Rarity Symbol

The very first Pokemon Game cards were printed in the 1996 Japanese set. The cards without a rarity symbol in the bottom right-hand corner are considered the 1st edition examples.

The 1996 Japanese base set was always considered to have only one print run until recently. These newly discovered (no rarity) cards are the first print run of the Japanese base set, the first pokemon cards ever printed.

Referred to as no rarity by collectors, these first print cards are signified by a lack of rarity symbols in the lower right-hand corner of the card. These rarity symbols are present in the general print run of the Japanese base set and in every other Pokemon card printing set to come, except for promos.

Card Details

No rarity cards are tough to find. It’s speculated that these cards were only printed for 1 to 2 weeks before the print run was switched to have rarity symbols, and nobody knows where they came from, whether it be short packs, base set packs, boxes, first print decks, etc.

1996 Japanese Set

It is unclear how many of the 1996 Japanese Pokemon cards were printed. By examining the population reports, I have found that only roughly the same amount as the 1999 1st edition cards have been submitted to PSA for grading so far. Meaning the print run could be considerably lower than most collectors realize.

Card Details

The 1996 Japanese Charizard holographic layout is different from the 1999 design. You can see the horizontal energy requirements are different than the block shape on the 1999 card. The holographic part and art are similar, though.

Investment Potential

The 1996 Japanese Charizard holographic is his “true rookie card.” It is the very first Pokemon Game card printed. The print run seems similar to the 1999 1st edition print run, which would make sense due to the lack of a Pokemon fan base in 1996.

1999 Shadowless Version

The third most expensive Charizard Pokémon card is the base set shadowless. This set was printed shortly after the 1st edition with slightly more print runs. The availability is still scarce compared to the unlimited set but not as rare as the 1st edition.

Card Details

On the base set shadowless, you’ll notice the 1st edition logo is gone. It doesn’t seem like much of a difference to the beginner, but for the die-hard collector, it’s a different card. Furthermore, having no shadow on any Pokémon card makes it more collectible than with shadow.

Investment Potential

Most Pokémon card collectors are familiar with the words shadowless and 1st edition, and when they see a Charizard with one or the other, they know it’s valuable. This will spread more and more across other collectible Pokémon cards, increasing their value.

1999 1st Edition Set

Here it is. The Holy Grail of Pokémon cards. The 1999 1st Edition Shadowless holographic Charizard #4 is in PSA gem mint condition. This is an iconic and essential card to the Pokémon franchise and its die-hard fans.

Can you imagine what Pokémon would be like if there were never a Charizard printed? It may not have gotten as big as it did.

What makes this Charizard more valuable?

Coming from the very first English set ever printed means the availability is far more limited than any other traditional Charizard card. Furthermore, it’s the first English Charizard card ever.

Unlike the second wave of 1st editions with the shadow or the third wave without the 1st edition, this has both the 1st edition and shadowless.

Population Report

A significant factor in determining the value of a PSA 10 is how rare they are. Of the 2,200+ 1st Edition holo Charizards, only 120 were found in PSA gem mint 10 conditions. That means you have less than a .05% chance of getting a PSA 10 if you submit one. That is astronomically low when compared to other sets.

Now, if you have a fresh pack or booster box of the 1st edition, that’s a different story. But, because kids didn’t care about the card’s condition back in 1999, the cards were poorly handled and damaged.

Investment Potential

There isn’t a better Pokémon card to invest in than the 1st edition Charizard. Sales have only gone up, up, up on this card regardless of the condition. Gem mint 10 copies were selling for roughly $9,000 apiece in 2016. Three years later, they’re demanding prices upward of $20,000. Because the population is so low and most of the product has been opened, the awareness of how rare these cards are is starting to surface.

So, if you’ve got the dough and want to buy the best Charizard Pokémon card, then the 1999 1st edition shadowless holo is the one to get. If you’re on a budget, don’t worry because mint 9 prices have risen along with practically every other grade down to authentic. Just go and buy one already; you know you want one.

Conclusion

In this article, I went over the top 15 Charizard Pokemon cards. The most valuable Charizard card is his 1996 Japanese Pokemon holographic with no rarity symbol. Not only is this the very first Charizard holo card, but it is also scarce due to the error of not having the rarity symbol. Due to the rarity, it is unclear what the value of a PSA 10 example is.
