How many pins do most motherboards have?

I’ve bought a Ryzen 3700X (65 watts TDP), a MSI X570-A PRO (with also both connectors) and a Seasonic FOCUS Plus Gold 550 as PSU. As you, I discovered the two CPU connectors on the motherboard and that the PSU only had a single CPU 8 pin (2x4) connector.

I tried with that single connector and the system (Windows 10) froze after several minutes of normal use (CPU was not under stress). My system also hosts a Geforce 1070 and 3 SATA SSDs. It draws around 100~150 watt of power without screen, far from PSU 550 watts maximum power.

I’ve replaced the PSU with my 10 year’s old Corsair HX520 (which had both connectors) and the system is perfectly stable since.

So, at least for Ryzen 3000, I think you need to connect both CPU connectors to avoid Windows 10 freeze.

Also, the MSI x570 A PRO manual (page 32) explicitly says « Important : Make sure that all the power cables are securely connected to a proper ATX power supply to ensure stable operation of the motherboard » on the Power Connectors page

The 20-pin connector belongs to older ATX standard while 24-pin connector follows newer ATX standard. The 24-pin connector just the 20-pin cable with 4 extra wires to provide extra current. As long as your power supply can provide sufficient power to the motherboard, you can still use 20-pin power supply.

How many pins are used in the power supply connector that are typically used on most motherboards today?

Before we discussing our topic, how many pins are used in the power supply connector that is typically used on most motherboards today, we can have a look into the basics, what is a power supply, what are power supply connectors, etc.

First, we an understanding, what is power supply?. Simply we can say that a power supply is an electrical device that is used to supply the electric power into an electrical load. The primary duty of the power supply is to convert the electric current to the correct voltage, frequency, and current that is from the source to the power the load. For this reason, the term electric power converter is sometimes used to refer to the power supplies.

The power supplies have come along with the other equipment or it may come as a standalone device. If it is not a separate device, then it will be built into the load appliances. The power supplies that are present in the user’s electronic device, desktops are the best example for the latter one.

Every power supplies have 2 types of connection. One is a power input connection and the other one is the power output connection where the power output connection can be one or more in number. The first one will receive the energy that is in the form of electric current from a source and the latter one will give the current to the load.

There are different kinds of power supply connectors available. The most important thing that we should care about them is the time of installing them, that is there should not be any mistake in installing them.

We can have a look at the common computer’s power supply connectors.

  • 4 pin peripheral power connector: This connector is commonly referred to as molex connector.
  • 4 pin peripheral to SATA cable Assembly.
  • 6 Pin PCI Express Power Connector.4 Pin ATX +12V Power Connector.
  • SATA power connector.
  • 8 Pin PCI Express Power Connector.
  • 8 Pin EPS +12V Power Connector: This connector is usually used for high-end video cards to provide extra power. etc

There are power supply connectors having a difference in the number of pins. The motherboards have a power supply connector. And this power supply connector has multiple pins and most of the motherboards which use the power supply connector today have 24 pins.

I'm buying this case and some people in the review said it comes with a 24 pin connector and that most mobos are 20 pin. How can I tell how many pins my motherboard is? I'm getting these items that I wanna know about and tried manufacturers website.

The motherboard has 20 pins. Check the motherboard photo at ABIT's website and enlarge the photo.

I can tell you right off the bat that the board is 20-pin, but you can just count them.

The PSU is also 20-pin, as shown in this picture.

I dont know why, this guy wrote

The power supply that comes with this case has a 24 pin mobo connector! Most mother boards have a 20 pin connector. Make sure your mother board has a 24 pin connector, or buy an adapter. It is very disappointing when you go to build your computer and realize you have to wait for an adapter, so be prpared.

Other than that, the case is ok. Absolutely no instructions were included and there are a lot of wires to connect for the front panel display. I ended up leaving most of them unconnected as I could not figure out where they went.

It's also a very tight fit to get any of the drives in. I would suggest installing them before you do anything else.

The three case fans are nice and very quiet, they keep the temp very cool.

Installed an EPoX EP-9NDA3J Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - no problems there. Thats why i thought it was 24 pins

The picture might very well be wrong. If you're worried, get an adapter with your setup. Per our conversation the other day I understand you're on a tight budget, but they're cheap.

So you just took him from a $48 solution to a $190 solution. This guy is on a really tight budget. I talked to him on MSN the other day and he's trying to eek out the best system he can. What you have suggested is totally unreasonable.

It's cool man, but even without a budget given it's a little unreasonable to recommend something 4x more expensive.

How many pins does my motherboard have?

Most motherboards will have 4 pin headers you can use with either 3 or 4-pin, although some boards do have 3-pin only headers, though this is very uncommon.

Are all motherboards 24 pin?

Almost all of the new power supplies used today feature a 24-pin power connector to connect to a computer motherboard. However, some motherboards still feature a 20-pin ATX power connection. Thankfully, almost all 24-pin power connectors are designed so that four of the pins can be detached or moved out of the way.

Are most motherboards 24 pin?

The ATX 24-pin power supply connector is the standard motherboard power connector in computers today.

Is ATX 20 or 24 pin?

With the introduction of ATX-2, this cable is now a 24-pin cable and no longer a 20-pin cable. In the pictures, the ATX cable connector has a small clip on the top, which snaps and holds the cable in place.
