The new jobs may pay up to $22.50 an hour in some locations, Amazon said. The roles also provide full-time workers with health, vision and dental insurance, as well as a 401(k) and up to 20 weeks paid parental leave. Some businesses have blamed COVID-19 unemployment benefits for the dearth of qualified workers, but millions of workers say they continue to sit on the sidelines because of virus fears, as well as a shortage of child care and remote school for younger children.

The average starting wage of $18 an hour will be effective in regions where labor markets are tight, while the company will continue to pay a minimum wage of $15 an hour, said Dave Bozeman, vice president of delivery services at Amazon.

"With the pandemic, we have seen it tight in certain areas rather than others — we have to make sure we have a competitive wage in those areas," Bozeman said, adding that regions including parts of Kentucky, Iowa and Ohio are experiencing tight labor markets.

Other companies have also boosted wages and benefits to lure workers from the sidelines. While some businesses have pointed the finger at pandemic unemployment benefits — which ended on Labor Day — the nation's labor force still hasn't rebounded to its pre-pandemic size. There are about 3 million fewer workers in the labor force today than there were prior to the pandemic.

Bozeman said the company's announcement that its hiring 125,000 workers isn't part of its seasonal hiring push. The company plans to announce those hirings later this year, he added.

Amazon said it has opened more than 250 warehouses in 2021 and plans to open 100 new buildings this month. Amazon said people can learn more about the jobs at this site.

Sept 28 (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc's warehouse and transportation workers will receive an increased average starting pay of more than $19 per hour from $18, the world's largest online retailer said on Wednesday.

The wage hike would help the company attract and retain workers in a tightening U.S. labor market as the peak season for gifting gets underway.

Amazon said the pay hikes would cost the company nearly $1 billion over the next year.

Employees will now earn between $16 and $26 per hour depending on their position and location in the United States, the company added.

Amazon's minimum wage for hourly employees in the U.S. remains $15, a spokesperson told Reuters.

The online retailer's decision also comes as some workers continue to push to unionize Amazon facilities in the United States. Only one Amazon facility has voted to unionize so far.

The company is battling soaring inflation and high employee turnover as workers seek higher wages to meet the rising cost of living.

Amazon had over 1.5 million full and part-time employees globally as of the quarter ended June 30, with a majority of workers in the United States.

The world's largest online retailer also said it would pay a sign-on bonus of $3,000 in some locations and the hourly wage could go up to $22.50. Amazon was among the first few retailers to set a $15 an hour minimum wage in 2018.

Amazon had said in May it would pay around $17 in average wages.

The company is hiring to run the 100 logistics facilities it will launch this month in the United States, on top of the more than 250 that opened earlier this year.

The additional staffing will also help roll out one-day delivery for Amazon's Prime loyalty club members.

Retailers are scrambling to hire hourly workers in a tight-labor market and have been offering benefits and sign-on bonuses to entice them.

Walmart Inc (WMT.N) said earlier this month said it planned to hire 20,000 workers at its supply chain division ahead of the busy holiday season.
