The 100th edition of the English football season's traditional curtain raiser the FA Community Shield is back again in 2022. It's a match between the FA Cup holder and the current Premier League champions. This year it's FA Cup winners Liverpool vs Man City, the EPL title holders.

Last season's battle for the Premier League was between Liverpool and Man City and it came down to the very last day of the competition. They'll immediately renew their rivalry with this teaser for the 2022/23 EPL season.

The FA Community Shield featuring Liverpool and Man City takes place on Sunday 31 July at 2am AEST at Leicester City's King Power Stadium. It's being hosted at the home of the 2021 FA Community Shield winners as the Shield's traditional venue Wembley Stadium has the UEFA Women's EURO 2022 Final scheduled to take place on the same weekend.

Comparing past performance in the FA Community Shield is kind of an apples and oranges situation, but for some context, Liverpool last won back in 2006 and more recently were runners-up in 2019 and 2020. Meanwhile Man City have had a successful run in the FA Community Shield over the past dozen years, winning in 2012, 2018 and 2019, and being runners-up in 2011, 2014 and last year.

In terms of immediate form, Man City won their 2 friendlies on US soil over the last week-and-a-half against Bayern Munich and Club América. Liverpool meanwhile also had some friendlies over July. They lost their first pre-season match to Man United, but managed to then win against Crystal Palace and RB Leipzig, before going down to RB Salzburg a few days ago. Admittedly friendlies aren't always the best judge of form as they might not contain all topline players, but it does give you a rough idea of how a team is travelling so early in this new season.

It will be a close match, especially considering the past few Liverpool vs Man City games have been as such. But we reckon Liverpool will lift the first bit of silverware in the English season and take out the FA Community Shield. It wouldn't surprise us though if it's a draw and it came down to penalties.
