Is Ground Zeroes the same as phantom pain?

The Phantom Pain originally debuted on 2012 December 7 on Spike's VGA awards. After months of confusion, it was revealed that The Phantom Pain is actually the subtitle of the core Metal Gear Solid V game. It will be set in 1984, and take place nine years after the events of Ground Zeroes.

Which brings us to the next point: What is Ground Zeroes then? It is a separate game, but still related to The Phantom Pain. Both games are part of "the complete Metal Gear Solid V experience," according to Konami. [1]

The story of Ground Zeroes takes place in 1975, nine years before The Phantom Pain. Hideo Kojima, the game's creator, says that the game will serve as an introduction to open-world gameplay while still being in a closed area. [2]

Ground Zeroes will focus on the side characters Paz and Chico and what happens to them after the events of Peace Walker, which is set one year before Ground Zeroes.

Ground Zeroes (?) Gameplay Demo from PAX 2012

To make things even more confusing, before the name "Metal Gear Solid V" was ever used, Konami showed off a game they called Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. It is unclear whether this game is actually Ground Zeroes, as it seems to be an open-world game without Paz or Chico in it.

Hideo Kojima says of the two games:

advertisement

Ground Zeroes is only the prologue, so I wanted to separate it [from The Phantom Pain] ... Ground Zeroes takes place in 1975, Phantom Pain takes place nine years after. There's a wide difference between the two, and I wanted to separate that... In transitioning from the style of older Metal Gear games to an open world design, we didn't want it to be a shock. Ground Zeroes is a little bit closed. It offers an opportunity for player to get used to the open-world feel. They can get used to traversal and use all these different vehicles to move around in a closed area, then move on to the real story with its open feel. [3]

TPP maps are 200 bigger than the Camp Omega map in GZ, I think this shows you how really different they are.

Ground Zeroes is just Camp Omega, with all the side missions using the same map, although with dividers and walls added here and there I think. The engine is a bit more dated and it really should have been either free or $5.
TPP is the full game, has the multiplayer, more and larger maps, and Mother Base.

holy moly...

Is Ground Zeroes the same as phantom pain?

it's basicly one game. GZ is mission 1 and TPP missions 2-51

What are you talking about? It's the same engine used from Phantom Pain.

No it's not. The UI is a lot different, none of the Mother Base features are accessable, and it has no multiplayer functionality. It's an older version.

UI is just a retexture, I saw it. It's like saying a difference between from Half Life 2 to Dota 2 (2004-2013) Same engine.

Ground Zeroes controls terribly on m+kb as compared to TPP. God am I glad they spent more time polishing controls for the full game.

No it's not, the GZ UI is completely different. Instead of it just jumping to the map you have to go through menus, the HUD is more crudely made, and I think there's no actual markers on the map.
If we're talking about the original, retail HL2, then no, it's about as different from the modern Source engine as it was from GoldSrc.

GZ tech is 9 years older than TPP so it's not as smooth or advanced.

The gameplay is very subtly different. You can make tighter turns on TPP while GZ is a little more loose. You can peek from cover using your binoculars in TPP. When diving in GZ you can choose to either stay in prone or get back up. Diving off a ledge in TPP will let you roll and keep your momentum going.

Is Ground Zero part of phantom pain?

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a 2014 stealth game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami. It is the eighth game in the Metal Gear series directed, written and designed by Hideo Kojima, and serves as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, released the following year.

Should I play Ground Zeroes before phantom pain?

The Extra missions you get after compleating the story in Zero you can safely skip if you want, They contain Optional missions with some teasers towards the main game. The thing is, the plot in Ground zero will get Spoiled for you during MGSV PP, as it picks up where Zero left it.

Can I skip Ground Zeroes?

and most likely some other stuff too. GZ is the prologue and if you try to 100% the game you will be busy for a while untill TPP releases. The events of The Phantom Pain are consequences from Ground Zeroes so, yes, you should. Yes you'll be ok even without playing Ground Zeroes.

Is Ground Zeroes a full game?

Ground Zeroes may be marketed as a standalone short story, but it's not even that. It's merely a stranded scene or two, floating in isolation for newcomers and lacking in the narrative nourishment series fans expect (despite its marathon hidden audio recordings).
