Upon first hearing of OxiClean, the premise of cleaning with oxygen seemed far-fetched.

"If oxygen is all around in the atmosphere and removes stains so well, how does anything get dirty in the first place?" I asked myself.

According to an OxiClean representative, the oxygen in peroxide and refined baking soda acts to lift stains to the surface, making them easier to scrub out. It was developed in 1992 in Colorado by Max Apple.

Despite my initial doubts, I tested the product.

I bought a one and a half pound container of OxiClean which was filled with powder and came with a little scoop.

According to the label, the powder can be put in the washing machine to supplement detergent or dissolved in warm water to clean most fabrics and even tile and grout.

OxiClean cannot be used on wool, silk, leather or anything else that cannot be washed with water. It also is not recommended on rust and other metallic stains because of the oxidation process.

I had persistent carpet stains on my staircase. They were either spots of garlic butter sauce which comes with a pizza or drops of coffee with cream and sugar. The stains have been in the carpet so long I can no longer remember which are which, and I have used bleach, various carpet cleaners and Simple Green without success.

To spot remove carpet stains, the OxiClean label recommends dissolving an eighth of a scoop of powder into 16 ounces of warm or hot water.

I used an empty drinking water bottle with a convenient sport nozzle, so I could simply squirt the blend all over my stairs.

The powder dissolved quickly and clouded the water. I heard fizzing noises and saw bubbles forming on the side of the bottle.

I attributed both to the oxygen.

Just as the instructions prescribed, I doused each spot and waited for 5-30 minutes. I then rinsed each spot with fresh water and blotted excess moisture with a paper towel.

To my surprise, the stains were gone. But I challenged OxiClean to an even tougher stain.

Some time ago, I painted my room dark gray, and a big glob of paint fell through a crack in my drop cloth. I mixed up another batch of OxiClean and squirted it on the gray part of my otherwise beige carpet.

After 5-30 minutes, I discovered that OxiClean had come through again even though there was a bit more scrubbing involved.

The only problem is that OxiClean got my carpet too clean. On the stairs and on the former paint spot, there were sparkling white patches that made an obvious stand against the wall to wall expanse of dingy floor covering.

Therefore, I recommend using OxiClean in tandem with a carpet cleaning machine. OxiClean can be mixed into your regular carpet cleaning solution in order to perfect the entire floor at once for a uniform appearance.

If you think your carpet is already pretty clean, however, I would just take out the spots and not go to so much trouble.

How do you make a carpet cleaner with OxiClean?

2 tablespoons of liquid detergent..

1 scoop of OxiClean stain remover..
1 teaspoon of fabric softener (optional).

Does OxiClean leave residue on carpet?

I personally don't use it on carpets, but I have tried it in the past. It takes really, really hot water to get it to dissolve very well and it is difficult to remove the residue left over from the crystals. If used it must be thoroughly rinsed or there will be a white residue left everywhere it was used.
