Is there season 3 of The Witcher?

After The Witcher season two dropped on Netflix, we all turned our attention to The Witcher season three. Thankfully, there was no need for speculation or wishful thinking, because Netflix had already confirmed another series is definitely happening.

Here's everything we know about the third instalment of the much-loved fantasy show, from potential release date to storylines and so much more.

When will The Witcher season 3 be released?

Following a long wait, Henry Cavill has finally given us some intel on The Witcher season three's release date: summer 2023.

He confirmed the news on stage at Netflix's TUDUM event over the weekend. We don't have an exact month for release just yet but at least summer is *something*, giving us around nine months to wait.

Season one of The Witcher was released in December 2019, while season two dropped on Netflix on 17 December 2021. Following that pattern, viewers originally though The Witcher S3 might arrive around December 2023 - so the summer confirmation is a whole six months earlier than previously though. Hooray!

What will The Witcher season 3 be about?

Following up on their production announcement, The Witcher's Twitter account also shared an intriguing insight into season three's plot.

They told followers, "We're also excited to reveal the official plot summary for the upcoming season...," alongside an image featuring a full synopsis for the series.

The summary teases:

"As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri's magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl's untapped powers; instead, they discover they've landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line - or risk losing each other forever."

Fans of the series will already know that The Witcher is based on the books of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski, and created for Netflix by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich - so we'll expect season three to stay close to the books too.

The end of season two picked up on a few details from the series' second book, The Time of Contempt. It makes sense then that the third series will follow the plot of the same book, in which Ciri works on completing her sorceress training.

Who will star in The Witcher season 3?

Thanks to The Witcher's Twitter account announcing the start of filming on S3 with a picture from set, we can see that Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Enola Holmes, The Tudors) will indeed be returning as Geralt of Rivia.

Sat next to Cavill, we can presumably see Freya Allan (Gunpowder Milkshake) back in her role as Princess Ciri, as well as Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust) as Yennefer - though the picture is from the back of their heads.

We can also expect the likes of Anna Shaffer (Triss), Joey Batey (Jaskier), Eamon Farren (Cahir), MyAnna Buring (Tissaia), Lars Mikkelson (Stregobor), Terence Maynard (Artorius), Tom Canton (Filavandrel) and Royce Pierreson (Istredd) and to also return.

Is there a trailer for The Witcher season 3?

Bearing in mind that the show is set to be released in summer 2023, we'll probably be waiting a little while longer for the trailer. Until then, why not rewatch the first and second seasons to really get yourself in The Witcher mood?

What have The Witcher cast said about season 3?

"All I know is that I’m incredibly excited to start it, really," Joey Batey, who plays Jaskier, told Cosmopolitan UK. "Yeah, we know some of the beats, and Lauren [Schmidt Hissrich] is guiding this ship with such kindness … And collaborative spirit. Yeah, we’re all kind of raring to go."

Producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich added, "Not only has work [on season three] already started, the writers’ room is almost finished. Season three is really fun because it’s based on my favourite book on the series, which is the Time of Contempt. In fact, a lot of stuff that we’re doing in season two has really been the work of setting up that season.

"And there are huge things that happen. And a lot of people die. It is a big turning point, both for our series and storytelling, but also just in the Continent itself."
