Legend of the Galactic Heroes watch order Reddit

So I think I will finally watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I was wondering if there was a Watch order that is recommanded for this series.

After all there is, as far as I know, 3 movies and 3 series :

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War (movie).

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden: Golden Wings (movie).

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars (movie and prequel).

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes (The original series).

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden: A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights (So the prequel of the original series).

  • Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden: Spiral Labyrinth (Sequel to the prequel).

In the end I was wondering in what order to watch those, do I start with the original serie or do I start with the prequel ? When do I watch the movies ? Etc. etc.

Thank you for your help.

Both are great.

Of course the Remake looks updated and fast pace like the LN, but it is still on going and in this pace i give like 3-4+ years until they complete everything. (If this is really the intention).

Remake order:

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These (Season 1) >

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These - Seiran 1,2,3 (Season 2) >

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These - Gekitotsu (Season 3 - on going)

Old series order:

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Waga Yuku wa Hoshi no Taikai >

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Arata Naru Tatakai no Overture >

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu OVA Series (start from episode 3) >

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Gaiden

The original OVA has two movies accompanying it that are both prequels. The first one, My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars, takes place a few months before the first episode, while the second, Overture to a New War, is essentially a more detailed remake of the first 2 episodes and is considered the definitive canon.

The OVA is generally regarded as the superior work because of it's more nuanced approach to the source material, and more authentic atmosphere compared to the remake's more bishounen, marketable art style, more simplified characterization that OVA fans would consider questionable. Neither are bad, both are LOGH after all, but I greatly prefer the OVA and so do most people on the subreddit.

Watch Conquest, then Overture, then start on episode 3 of the OVA if you are only interested in experiencing "canon." But I would still watch the first 2 episodes anyway simply because I adore every second of every episode of this series.

And remember, there is no Golden Wings in Ba Sing Se.

Edit:

Question has been answered, going for the Modified Release order. Thanks!

So I'm about to start this 'masterpiece' for the first time. I've known about it for ages, but the dated art style has always put me off actually starting it. After being repeatedly bludgeoned over the head with facts about how amazing it is, I've decided to try watching it. While scouring the internet for a proper viewing order, I've basically discovered that there are two groups of LoGH viewers, those who prefer to watch it in a 'modified release' order and those who prefer to watch it in strict chronological order.

Modified Release:

  • My Conquest is the Sea of Stars

  • Overture to a New War

  • Main OVA series

  • Gaiden 1/2

  • Golden Wings (considered an extra)

Chronological:

  • Spiral Labyrinth (Side Stories / Gaiden 2, episodes 1-14)

  • Valley of White Silver (Side Stories / Gaiden 1, episodes 1-4)

  • Those Who Revolt / Mutineer (SS / G2, ep. 15-18)

  • Those Who Duel / Duelist (SS / G2, ep. 19-22)

  • Golden Wings

  • Those Who Recapture / Survivors (SS / G2, ep. 23-26)

  • Morning's Dream, Night's Song (SS / G1, ep. 5-8)

  • A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights (SS / G1, ep. 13-24)

  • The Third Tiamat Battle (SS / G2, ep. 27-28)

  • My Conquest is the Sea of Stars

  • Disgrace (SS / G1, ep. 9-12)

  • Overture to a New War

  • Main OVA series

G1 = A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights Gaiden

G2 = Spiral Labyrinth Gaiden

What I was unable to find, were the relative merits or drawbacks to viewing the anime in one order or the other. My gut instinct tells me to watch it in strict chronological order, but I'm worried that some things revealed in the Gaiden 1/2 series may spoil significant plot details in the main series. Taking into account the fact that this show is considered by many to be one of the paragons of Japanese anime, I really don't want to ruin the viewing experience at all (if possible.)

What order should I watch Legends of the Galactic Heroes?

Chronological order: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War (Movie) Legend of the Galactic Heroes – Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 (OVA Series) Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden 1999 – Episodes 1-14 (OVA Series) Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden – Episodes 1-4 (OVA Series)
