Rick and Michonne spinoff release date

The Walking Dead may be over... except it's not. Not really.

The zombie universe is only expanding and there are plenty of spinoffs on the way, including a limited series centred around Rick Grimes and Michonne Hawthorne in which we'll *finally* see the pair reunited after all these years apart.

"This is a moment fans of The Walking Dead have been waiting for since Rick disappeared in the helicopter early in season nine, and Michonne journeyed away on a quest to find him the following season," Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said when the series was announced earlier this year. Indeed it is.

Rick and Michonne's reunion has been described as nothing short of "epic" and "mind-blowing", so we're here to tell you everything you need to know about it.

In an interview with SELF, Danai Gurira revealed that filming for the six-episode series will begin in January 2023, so we wouldn't expect to see it until at least the end of the year.

As for where you can watch it when it does arrive?

The flagship series is currently available to watch on Disney+ in UK, while The Walking Dead: World Beyond and Fear The Walking Dead are both available to stream on Prime Video.

Taking that into account, it's possible the serieswill follow the spinoff suit and air on Prime Video.

Rick/Michonne spinoff cast: Who's in it?

the walking dead, season 11 finale

You can't have a Rick and Michonne spinoff series without, well, Rick and Michonne. So Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira will definitely be back in those roles.

With the exception of our leading duo, no other cast members have been announced, but we'll let you know as soon as they are.

Rick/Michonne spinoff plot: What's it about?

Lincoln and Gurira were originally supposed to be reprising their roles as Rick and Michonne for multiple feature films that would finally reveal what happened to Rick when he was abducted by the mysterious CRM group in season nine, and where Michonne ended up when she left to go find him the following season.

Replacing the films, the untitled miniseries will reunite Rick and Michonne in an "epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world".

The synopsis continues: "Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they've ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive – or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?"

While speaking at the AMC Networks Summit in New York in September, showrunner Scott M Gimple teased that the spinoff will take place in a location The Walking Dead universe hasn't seen yet.

"The discovery of individual new worlds is critical," he said, before reminding fans Rick "discovered a new world" when he came out of his coma in the very first episode of The Walking Dead.

Wherever it may take us, Gimple has promised us a "mindblowing" reunion, saying: "These are two people that have been separated for a very long time. They've lived whole other existences and they have to find themselves again, let alone each other. It's hopefully going to be mind-blowing."

Rick/Michonne spinoff trailer: Is there any footage yet?

No trailer yet. Sorry, folks.

But when footage showcasing the series does arrive, you'll find everything you need to know right here.

The Walking Dead season 11 airs on AMC in the US, and STAR on Disney+ in the UK.
