What happened at the end of season 5 Rick and Morty?

Rick and Morty season 5 spoilers follow.

Following a somewhat disappointing run of episodes, Rick and Morty's two-part season five finale well and truly kicked things up a notch, treating fans to not just one, but a number of schwifty reveals.

In addition to the long-awaited return of Evil Morty (complete with eyepatch) and a deep-dive into Rick's "stupid crybaby backstory," we also learned about something called the Central Finite Curve – an interdimensional wall that blocks off all the realities where Rick isn't the smartest person in the universe. Or, as Evil Morty calls it, "an infinite crib built around an infinite f**king baby".

As it turns out, the Citadel was actually designed to breed an endless supply of Mortys, who would then assist their respective Ricks in creating this rather messed-up reality barrier.

Sick of the endless cycle of abuse, Evil Morty decided to destroy the Curve (in gloriously cinematic fashion, we might add), allowing him to escape to parts of the multiverse that are beyond Rick's control.

But what does this mean for the future of the show? With Rick's protective bubble now burst, the possibilities just got infinitely bigger. No longer the smartest man in existence, could the mad scientist now come up against some more challenging enemies?

This idea in itself raises a few questions. Considering the Curve was meant to shield Rick from coming across anyone smarter than himself, we've still seen him encounter a number of worthy adversaries, including the likes of horny aquatic man Mr Nimbus and, curiously, the President of the United States.

It's also safe to say that Rick was actually bested by Evil Morty in the finale, so was he ever really the smartest man in the Curve?

The finale ended with Evil Morty discovering a new world before jumping into a yellow portal (a change from the usual green to signify his independence from Rick). It's not entirely clear if we'll ever see him again, but if we do, it certainly won't be on Rick's terms.

In any case, following this interdimensional shakeup, the emotional stakes will surely be higher than ever, with Rick now forced to confront the realities he's been hiding from this entire time.

He's got up to some pretty dark and weird stuff over the course of his life, so just imagine what might exist in the universes he didn't want us to see. A Plumbus with extra shleem? The Council of Birdpersons? Perhaps he'll even come across the Rick who accidentally killed his wife and the original version of his daughter. There's an episode that would surely trigger the biggest emotional reaction we've seen from Rick yet.

Most notably, what we seem to be leaning towards is a more serialised approach to the series. Indeed, one of our main criticisms of season five has been the lack of character development, which naturally comes with a more episodic show structure. But by introducing a bit of continuity, they may finally be able to move things in a meaningful direction.

Fans had long been calling out for the show to follow through with more of its storylines, and while the creators should never bend to the will of the audience, it's hard to deny that the canonical reveals of the finale were the high point of the entire season.

Well, it appears that those complaints have been acknowledged, because showrunner Scott Marder has suggested that future seasons of the Adult Swim animation will indeed feature more serialised storytelling.

Speaking to Interdimensional RSS, he said: "We ourselves, even before [Season 5] aired, were like,'Oh, it would be fun to give things a little bit more continuity, make things feel like they're not so standalone.' Which feels to me like the big note that I feel like I'm generally getting on Season 5 like, 'Fun episodes, but we want to feel like 'A equals B' and they're all kind of moving, and relate to each other and don't just ignore things from the past.'

"Certainly not the goal out of the gates for Season 5."

None of this is to say that Rick and Morty should always stick to serialised storytelling, and nor do we expect it to. In fact, when the writing's at its best, it's the standalone adventures like 'Pickle Rick' and 'Interdimensional Cable' where the show's trademark weirdness really shines through.

But now, with Rick's barrier broken, and an even bigger multiverse to explore, it feels like the true chaotic weirdness has only just begun.

Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim in the US, and on E4 and All 4 in the UK.
