Drywall screws (sheetrock screws) are specialized self-tapping screws that usually feature a bugle head that is designed to attach drywall to studs, and a phosphate finish.

Self-tapping screws are used for all sorts of material including wood, metal, and brick. These screws cannot drill through metal and require a pilot hole to be pre-drilled before installation.

Self-Tapping – a screw for securing thinner sheet metals and other substrates that cuts its own thread, but usually requires a predrilled or pre-punched hole. Self-Drilling – a screw that can, well, self-drill through various gauges of metal materials without predrilling.

There are two types of self-tapping screws, thread-forming and thread-cutting. Thread-forming: Before you can use these screws you will need to drill a pilot hole as the screw itself does not contain a pointed tip. Thread-forming screws are usually used to join plastic materials together.
