• I have an SSIS Package that is copying records from a SQL 2005 DB on one Server to a SQL 2005 DB on another Server.    The package takes about 2.5 hrs to copy the data (due to newtork speed).   It is set up as a scheduled job that will repeat the jobstep on failure.   While I am able to get the copy to complete each day, I am unable to do so without multiple tries.   When the package fails I receive the error message:

  Description: "Communication link failure".  An OLE DB record is available.  Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client"  Hresult: 0x80004005  Description: "TCP Provider: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.  ".  End Error  Error: 2009-09-17 15:33:25.60     Code: 0xC0209029     Source: Populate Report Tables Destination 1 - DTSCReportTable [224]     Description: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_INDUCEDTRANSFORMFAILUREONERROR.  The "input "Destination Input" (237)" failed

  Sometimes the package will run for a few minutes before such an error occurs.  Sometimes it will go for an hour or even 2 hours before the error occurs.  I assume that something is happening on the machine I am copying to that bumps my connection, but I don't know what it might be.

• Just because the VPN link doesn't go down doesn't mean connections running over it would not.  Your VPN link may be (should be) specifically designed to be resilient to network outages, and reconnect itself or simply not inform carried connections that the link has (momentarily) failed.  It is also possible that the VPN link itself is causing the network outage, even though the underlying connection to the internet remains consistently connected.
