A tarp covers the field for a second weather delay during the first inning of an NCAA college super regional baseball game between Texas and East Carolina, Sunday, June 12, 2022, in Greenville, N.C.

After nearly five hours in a weather delay, East Carolina baseball is set to resume Game 3 of its super regional against Texas.

Action will begin at 10:15 p.m. ET, in the top of the first inning with one out.

The game between ECU and Texas was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. ET, but first pitch was pushed back until 5:05 p.m. ET.

Texas scored four runs in the top of the first, leaving the Pirates trailing 4-0 during the delay.

After winning the opening game of the series and losing 9-8 Saturday, Sunday's elimination game will decide whether the Pirates earn their first trip to the College World Series or fall one win short.

Game 2 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional between UNC and Arkansas also was delayed twice because of weather on Sunday. Arkansas ultimately won.

Texas vs east carolina weather delay

After losing a five-run lead Saturday and sitting through a five-hour weather delay Sunday, East Carolina baseball came up one game short of the College World Series.

Texas raked at the plate from the first pitch and put up four quick runs before the game went into a weather delay with one out in the top of the first. Following the break, the Longhorns continued to pile on, building an eight-run lead by the end of the second.

By then, it was all but over. ECU lost, 11-1, falling a win short of earning the program its first CWS appearance.

Here are three takeaways from East Carolina’s Game 3 loss in the Greenville Super Regional:

Omaha out of reach

The Pirates have made 20 more NCAA Tournament appearances than the next-closest program to never reach the College World Series. On Saturday, that streak looked like it would be broken.

ECU led by five runs in the seventh inning and by three in the bottom of the eighth, just six outs away from clinching the series. Even after falling behind, they came back to tie the game before a Texas walkoff extended the series.

Game 3 didn't go according to plan, either.

Even after coming so close in the historic program’s 32nd NCAA appearance, East Carolina missed history by a few outs.

No rain delay reset

For a moment, it looked like the Pirates might have come out of the weather delay as the stronger team.

They got out of the top of the first and put a run on the board in the bottom of the inning to shrink Texas’ lead. But after Texas added five more runs in the second, ECU’s offense was silent for the rest of the game. The Pirates finished with just five hits — all of which were singles — and rarely got into scoring position.

Pitching woes

ECU starter Danny Beal allowed the first four runs and was pulled in the first inning before recording an out.

Lacking a true ace, the Pirates have relied on a bullpen-heavy approach for much of the season and it has largely been successful, as ECU ranked in the top 25 nationally in both ERA and WHIP. But throughout the super regionals, the Pirates staff struggled.

ECU allowed 27 runs in three games, and after Texas piled on the runs in the first two innings Sunday, it was too late for ECU’s bats to make a difference.

Weather has been a problem in Greenville as East Carolina and Texas are waiting to play their winner take all Super Regional game. First pitch was delayed by an hour and moved back to 4:05 CT. Less than a half-inning later, the umpires had to call another delay as the two teams walked off the diamond.

Texas was off to a fast start, thanks to an Ivan Melendez three-run home run before there was even an out recorded. Skyler Messinger was able to knock in another run as well, and the Longhorns have an early 4-0 lead heading into the delay.

A trip to the Men’sCollege World Series in on the line after splitting the first two matchups. East Carolina was able to pull away on Friday afternoon in Game 1 thanks to their bats. Momentum was rolling in The Jungle before Texas came alive in the seventh inning of Game 2. A comeback win forced the all-important Game 3 on Sunday night.

If East Carolina is able to pull off the comeback win, they will be heading to Omaha for the first time in program history. The Pirates have made three straight Super Regionals but have not been able to get over the hump at packed their bags for Omaha. Although they will be starting slightly behind, a simple rally is all it will take to get back in the game.

Making the Men’s College World Series is nothing new for Texas, especially under head coach David Pierce. After coming up just short last season, the goal is to lift the national championship trophy when it’s all said and done. Especially after being the preseason No. 1 team, the Longhorns will need to win Sunday night’s restart to consider the year a success.

There has been no timetable as to when play will resume in Greenville.

Why is the Texas East Carolina game delayed?

The game was delayed for over five hours due to weather and resumed at 10:15 p.m. The Longhorns will go on to Omaha for The College World Series. This story was originally published June 12, 2022 5:57 PM.

Why is Greenville Super Regional delayed?

The first pitch was delayed by about an hour because of lightning in the area and a second weather delay stalled the game for almost 5 hours. ECU Center fielder Bryson Worrell said the rain delay, which led the game to stretch into the early morning hours, didn't have much of an impact on the outcome.

Who won ECU or Texas?

The Texas Longhorns staked their claim to that title once again on Sunday, with an 11-1 victory over East Carolina securing their 38th College World Series appearance, the most in NCAA history.
