Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum Batman movie

With a runtime of nearly three hours, Matt Reeves presents a lot in The Batman. Not only is it a proper detective story for Batman but it's still a massive superhero spectacle that establishes a new Batman mythos. As a result, The Batman features a lot of twists, turns, and surprises for fans.

What Matt Reeves and his team did so well was that they made The Batman a truly standalone film but at the same time, there are seeds planted that could lead to so much in future movies and spin-offs on HBO Max.

Riddler's Traps

There are many versions of Riddler in the comics but there are none quite like this one. This version of Riddler is easily the darkest yet with traps reminiscent of ones from the Saw franchise.

Riddler is more or less a horror villain in The Batman which could be the style that Matt Reeves aims for across his series of films. Some of Batman's scariest villains such as Professor Pyg, Scarecrow, Joker, and Black Mask can easily be portrayed as these horror villains for Batman to investigate.

The Twins

A running gag throughout The Batman is the titular hero encountering twin bouncers for the Iceberg Lounge. They aren't given any names other than "The Twins" which could be a hint to an actual pair of Batman villains from the comics.

Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum are twin antagonists for Batman. If Matt Reeves ever introduces the Mad Hatter, the Twins could easily return as hired thugs for him, making for a more grounded take on the Tweedles.

The Death Of The District Attorney

Where most superhero movies would avoid the bloodshed and have Batman save the hostage, District Attorney Gil Colson actually ends up being murdered by one of Riddler's traps. It is a tragic scene that adds guilt to Batman's conscience, showing that he's not a flawless superhero.

At the same time, the lack of a district attorney can easily be leading to the introduction of Harvey Dent in future projects in the Batverse. Harvey Dent would inevitably transform into Two-Face who would fit in perfectly with Matt Reeves' grounded take on Batman.

Thomas Wayne's Mistake

The-Batman-Hush-Tease

To protect his wife and child, Thomas Wayne went to Carmine Falcone for help which led to the death of Edward Elliot. In the comics, Edward Elliot is a family member of Thomas Elliot, Bruce Wayne's oldest friend who becomes the villain known as Hush.

There is even a large "HUSH!" written by Riddler during this scene in which Riddler exposes the half-truth of Bruce's parents. That's not all. There's is the reveal that Martha Wayne was born as Martha Arkham which is a direct reference to Batman: Earth One that could lead to the introduction of Jeremiah Arkham.

Carmine Falcone's Death

Even though Riddler is the main villain of The Batman, Carmine Falcone is the overarching evil of Gotham City. Unfortunately, Riddler ends up sniping Falcone just as he's about to be arrested.  Now, this death sets up several things, including one being the fact that Batman will never know if the killer was a random mugger or not.

It also establishes a void in the criminal underworld of Gotham City which Batman even states will lead Gotham's criminals to fight for control. The Penguin will rise to power and become a crimelord but this could lead to the introduction of Black Mask, Joker, Two-Face, and other famous crimelords of Gotham City.

Flooded Gotham

Batman leads the survivors out of the flood in The Batman

The climax of The Batman has Gotham being flooded after Riddler's surprisingly terrifying attack, one of several surprisingly scary moments in the film. Many innocents suffer and a lot of Gotham is now underwater. This is not dissimilar to the lead-up into the No Man's Land storyline from the comics.

In No Man's Land, Batman has to face off against several villains trying to control Gotham in its flooded state including the Penguin. It's easy to see Matt Reeves adapting No Man's Land in his own way. However, Reeves also stated that he wants to bring in Mr. Freeze and a flooded Gotham City would be the perfect opportunity for a villain trying to freeze the city.

From Vigilante To Hero

Robert Pattinson's portrayal of Batman is much different because he's not trying to be a symbol of justice. All he wants is to punish the criminals and corrupt of Gotham City. However, across his journey to stop the Riddler from destroying Gotham City, he evolves from a creature that criminals and citizens fear to a hero.

This too could lead to some interesting opportunities such as other members of the Bat-Family like Robin or Batgirl. Batman's newfound respect from the public as a beacon of hope could inspire others but could also make him the source for more villains to rise from the shadows to hunt him.

Riddler Doesn't Die

A common problem with Batman films is that they tend to kill off iconic villains. Riddler is simply sent to Arkham Asylum in this one and that opens up possibilities for him to return in either sequels or the recently announced spin-off about Arkham Asylum.

Riddler is a genius as shown by his rather meticulously arranged plot in The Batman. As a result, it's not unlikely that Riddler could be used as this Hannibal Lecter-esque figure who assists Batman from his cell. It's a similar concept to Calendar Man in The Long Halloween but it also allows for Riddler to become a recurring threat for Gotham.

Catwoman Leaves Gotham

Batman and Catwoman sharing an intimate moment together

In The Batman, Selina Kyle is never really Catwoman, she's more in the proto-phase of her journey to become Catwoman. So, her leaving Gotham at the end of The Batman is essentially Reeves' way of saying that when she comes back, she will be the true Catwoman from the comics.

It is also potentially a way to set up a spin-off for the character, allowing fans to see Selina evolve into Catwoman. She already had one of the best costumes in The Batman and fans praised Zoë Kravitz's performance, so fans would love to see Selina upgrade her suit into the classic Catwoman design and become the world's greatest thief.

The Joker

Barry Keoghan at Arkham Asylum in The Batman

It was inevitable that Matt Reeves would introduce a new incarnation of the Joker. It was still surprising that Joker had a cameo, played by Barry Keoghan. Obviously, this is setting up Joker for the future but perhaps not immediately. Matt Reeves has stated that the Joker appearing is not necessarily confirming him as the villain for the next movie.

This could mean that Matt Reeves is saving Joker to be the big villain that the whole Batverse builds up to. After Batman has put enough villains into Arkham Asylum, Joker allies with the villains to take over the asylum, similar to the Batman: Arkham Asylum game. Joker could also be a recurring character in the Arkham Asylum spin-off.
